Do you believe the original writer(s) of the bible were being literal when they described the professions of Cain and Abel?
I happen to think the bible is an extremely shrouded book of stories about lost civilisations that had become developed, and were destroyed.
When civilizations develop, as you can observe today, they tend to divide into urban areas near the seas, and rural areas further in land
The rural areas would be where professional farmers and sheep herders operate. And the urban areas might be where the Lords of industry oversee the trafficking of goods throughout the market places.
It seems more reasonable to me, that Cain and Abel, both being in contact with the LORD, who oversees all industries, would not be rural farmers, but were instead urban captains of industry.
So then, it is a matter of figuring the riddle.
A group of sheep is a flock.
Similar to the word flock is fleet.
Today, transportation companies refer to their trucks as their fleet.
This could answer what Abel's profession was.
Tilling the earth sounds like it could be a man's perspective on sex.
So Cain sounds like he was a pimp.
So now a few questions arise.
What did it mean when Cain and Abel brought sacrifices to the LORD? Were these human sacrifices? Did the LORD kill and devour Cain's prostitute, and let Abel's product runner live?
After Cain killed Abel, and the LORD punished Cain, why was Cain unable to till the earth anymore?
