We don't find the words "lose your salvation" in Hebrews 3:12-13.
That's right.
Verse 14 is where we see the condition for keeping your salvation.
I was getting ready to talk about it, but I see you're bringing it up in the next paragraph...

Hebrews 3:14 - For we have become [past tense Gk. verb, gegonamen, meaning we have become already] partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end. Notice that this is essentially a repeat of verse 6, where we read: but Christ was faithful as a Son over His house - whose house we are, if we hold fast our confidence and the boast of our hope firm until the end. The wording is not - "and you will become (future indicative) partakers of Christ if you (future indicative) hold fast." It is rather - "you have been, and now are, partakers of Christ (demonstrative evidence) if in the future you hold fast."
Here's the literal translation of the verse:

14for partakers we have become of the Christ, if the beginning of the confidence unto the end we may hold fast - Hebrews 3:12-14 Young's Living Translation

'We have become' is in the Perfect tense. This is what the Perfect tense means:

The perfect tense in Greek is used to describe a completed action which produced results which are still in effect all the way up to the present. (bold mine) Sample translation: "I have believed."
Notice that the perfect tense carries two ideas: (1) completed action and (2) continuing results. The action was completed at some time in the past, and the results continue up to the present. (bold in original)


The author is saying you have the completed action of partaking of Christ, continuing up to the present if you have and retain to the very end the completed action of holding fast the confidence that you started out with.

It's a conditional statement. The completed action with it's results still in effect up to the present (partaking in Christ) is conditioned on you continuing to have the completed action of holding fast to the hope and faith that you started out in. IOW, the partaking ends if you no longer have the action of holding fast the hope and faith you started out in (note, 'hold fast' is in the subjunctive mood of uncertainty :eek:).

The passage can not be a description of partakers of Christ (as opposed to being a prescription of how to remain a partaker of Christ) as osas claims because the action said to be descriptive of a partaker of Christ (holding fast to the very end) is not completed yet, and can't be completed until the believer dies or Jesus returns at which time then, and only then, will it be known if the condition signifying they are a true believer has been fulfilled. Until then it's useless as a practical description of saved people because it can't be fulfilled now. Grammatically, and practically speaking it's a prescription of how to remain the partaker of Christ that you are--keep believing (cue Journey music ♪).

He defines this running he is doing for the Gospel, this discipline that they MIGHT Receive the PRIZE, obtain the GOSPEL, the INCORRUPTIBLE CROWN.

Then he continues in chapter 11 and gives examples of what happens to those who do not run that they MIGHT Receive the PRIZE, obtain the GOSPEL, the INCORRUPTIBLE CROWN. life everlasting with the Father and Son for eternity.

In closing in respect to this topic he says.

Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

I would be amiss if I failed to mention the Greek word for Castaway in verse 9:27 is a real interesting word. It is also translated REPROBATE and REJECTED in the KJV of the New Testament.
You are right that there are Prizes or CROWNS

Paul was apparently very fond of going to the GAMES, like the Olympic style of Games of his day. Hence he uses those games to relate to us how we are to run the Race.
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (HCSB)
24 Don’t you know that the runners in a stadium all race, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way to win the prize.
25 Now everyone who competes exercises self-control in everything. However, they do it to receive a crown that will fade away, but we a crown that will never fade away.

27 Instead, I discipline my body and bring it under strict control, so that after preaching to others, I myself will not be disqualified.

Crown not crowns in respect to the context of 1 Cor 9. and that Crown that he speaks of is the partaking of the Gospel.

There is no condition for keeping salvation...completely absurd.
The gift is eternal life...which means it is eternal...outside of time.

The context in regards to the Incorruptible prize starts in verse 23. please follow along.

Paul is doing something for the Gospel's sake, HE SAYS, "I DO that he MIGHT be a partaker THEREOF, of it with you.

That is what it says. Then he proceeds IN CONTEXT to compare this doing for the Gospel's sake to a race.

He says

1Cor 9:24 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.

As we can see Paul relates this DOING something for the Gospel SAKE to RUNNING in a race that you might receive The prize. HE IS STILL TALKING ABOUT partaking of the Gospel, obtaining salvation. He then exhorts that they run that they may obtain. THE CONTEXT IS THE GOSPEL, THIS IS THE PRIZE they are running to obtain ACCORDING TO the CONTEXT and sentence structure.

GOD through Paul continues.

1Cor 9:25 And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.

Paul compares running to obtain the prize, TO BEING TEMPERATE IN ALL THINGS. Then DESCRIBES the prize, the GOSPEL AS AN INCORRUPTIBLE CROWN.

He continues

1Cor 9:26 I therefore so run, not as uncertainly ( not aimlessly; not as one who has no fixed goal) so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:


Paul says, "I therefore so run". HOW SO? Not as uncertainly ( not aimlessly;not as one who has no fixed goal) so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: But as one that is striving for mastery that he obtain the prize, the Gospel, the INCORRUPTIBLE CROWN.

1Cor 9:27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway (REPROBATE, REJECTED).

So now GOD through Paul describes this not running AIMLESSLY BEATING THE AIR, as one who is striving for mastery, being temperate in all thing, keeping his body, and bringing it into subjection. THEN HE STATES WHY he is doing it. He says, "lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway (REPROBATE, REJECTED)."

A castaway, rejected, a reprobate. Not to partake of the Gospel, the PRIZE, THE INCORRUPTIBLE CROWN.

Our Lord ans savior does not stop there though HE CONTINUES WITH THE Same CONTEXT IN THE NEXT CHAPTER. He starts the NEXT CHAPTER WITH THE WORD "MOREOVER". SO let's take a look shall we?

1Cor 10:1 Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;
1Cor 10:2 And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;
1Cor 10:3 And did all eat the same spiritual meat;
1Cor 10:4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.
1Cor 10:5 But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.
1Cor 10:6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.
1Cor 10:7 Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.
1Cor 10:8 Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.
1Cor 10:9 Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.
1Cor 10:10 Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.

This is about paul desiring to be blameless BEFORE MAN and doing HIS BEST to not be the cause someone would discredit the gospel because HIS actions.

If we can lose salvation, then Jesus is surely being kept busy blotting names in and out of the Book of Life.. Not to mention dying over and over again on the cross..
