Your discussion with a fellow brother is obviously degenerating. Thats a shame. You sound defensive and frustrated. If Jesus’s sacrifice wasn’t enough for our salvation, then no amount of work could possibly be enough. Can a man accept the free offer of Christ’s perfect sacrifice , do nothing righteous afterward, and still be saved? Yes, absolutely ! (The crucified sinner next to Jesus did nothing but hang around for a while, then die.)
Grace + (any thing) is a (well meaning ?) mistake.
Really? The crucified thief beside Jesus did quite a bit! Here is the story from Luke 23:

39 One of the criminals who were hanged there was hurling abuse at Him, saying, “Are You not the Christ? Save Yourself and us!” 40 But the other answered, and rebuking him said, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41 And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving [c]what we deserve for our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 And he was saying, “Jesus, remember me when You come [d]in Your kingdom!” 43 And He said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise.”

He withstood the extreme pressure around him to mock Jesus, he rebuked and then witnessed to the other thief, and then he expressed clearly in words a deep faith in Jesus. And all this while he was dying in a most agonizing death!

And you say this thief is an example of "accepting the free offer of Christ's perfect sacrifice, do nothing afterward, and still be saved?"
And then you call dying an agonizing death of crucifixion "did nothing but hang around for a while, then die"!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do not believe salvation is a just a mental decision that we make that has little or no effect on our living. When we believe in Jesus, as did this thief, it has tremendous impacts on all of our living.

So it’s not by my power. Thus if We stop
Believing God must fail because we had no power to do it we must have no power to stop. It can’t be one way and both another

How long will we in circles Like this?
That circle is of your making, not mine.

God gives you the power of faith so you can then place your trust in Christ, if you want to. It's your choice if you're going to retain the faith God has given to you for you to trust in Christ or reject it and not trust in Christ. Choosing to believe is not a works gospel because believing is not one of the works that Paul says can not justify.

The scripture I posted is very special to my heart....on the evening the Holy Spirit testified to my spirit that I was his child,x
What I don't think you have in your experience with God is being confronted with the truth of the gospel through the testimony of the Holy Spirit and then deciding if you were going to believe in the gospel and be saved, or reject it. You seem to have just jumped right to the 'I am a child of God' testimony. Am I correct?

How can we retain the Holy Spirit, when he has already taken up residence in our spirit?

I really don’t understand your thinking on this...
He has testified to our spirit that we are his....how can we reject what is already in our hearts....we start our journey with God...we start to walk in the Spirit..our relationship with God begins.

No, I'm asking you if you were convicted by the Spirit as a lost sinner and then you had to choose whether or not you would believe and be saved. Or did all you hear was the Spirit saying you are a child of God?

You retain your faith in God.
Faith in God is what solicits the indwelling Holy Spirit.
If you stop believing you no longer have the conduit through which you are made a child of God.

You can’t ever stop believing, because he resides in our spirit...communication starts....he recognises us...we are his children.

No the circle is yours
you claim you have no power to believe it is God yet claim you do have power what you do with that faith
that means it’s your power Not Gods

Hence the circle that goes round and round

What are you talking about?
Paul said works of the law do not justify a person.
How does that make me secure in earning my salvation?
EPH 2. No works of the law in context
romans 4. No works of the law in context

I cried out to Jesus..a lot of what I said to him was personal..I didn’t choose anything..
My experience was this:

After suffering a deep broken heart and not finding any purpose in life, not knowing where to turn to for peace, a thought suddenly entered my mind; the thought said, Buy a Bible.

After hearing the gospel in the scriptures I got saved. And through continual reading and meditation I grow stronger and stronger in the grace of God.

Hebrews 5:14
[14] But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

We need our senses exercised by repeated and constant use of the scripture.

Titus 3:8
[8] This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works
