How do I become born again?
In Mark 16 ,why do you assume the Mark is talking about water in verse 16 ? Mark at the time of writing has already seen the unfolding of Acts 2 and giving of the Holy Spirit . I believe he's talking about the Holy Spirit ,not water .

Yes I agree faith is necessary but it seems to refer to baptism? Water and the spirit?
If it was baptism Jesus would have said baptism.
he did not, when he explained what it meant, the only thing he mentioned was faith, “for god so loved the world etc etc...

Hello Guojing, I've never read nor heard the argument that you are making (about being "born again"), so I have a couple of questions for you.

1) What do you believe that the Lord Jesus meant by the phrase "born again/born from above" in John 3 :unsure:
2) Why do you believe that an Israeli living at the time of Jesus needed to be "born again" to be saved, but the rest of us do not :unsure:

p.s. - as for the Apostle Paul not mentioning the new birth, while it may be true that the phrase itself ("born again") is not used by him, I believe that the concept is. Also, the Apostle John used a similar phrase in his Epistles, and the Apostle Peter used the phrase "born again" in his, so being "born again" hardly seems like Gospels only/1st Century Jews only Biblical terminology. Here are a few examples.


Ephesians 2
4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us,
5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved).
2 Corinthians 5
17 If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
Titus 3
5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit.
1 Peter 1
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
1 John 4
7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.
The apostle John and Peter were still writing to Israel in their letters, so born again is found in them

You can understand John's specific emphasis on being born again, as inextricably linked to Israel's relationship with God.

Their father, Abraham, was barren. Naturally, at his ripe old age, he could no longer have children.

God had to supernaturally intervene in his life to enable him to give birth to Issac.

Thru Issac, thru Jacob, thru his 12 sons, the nation literally came into existence.

Exodus 4:22 had a very insightful verse about this

And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, Thus saith the Lord, Israel is my son, even my firstborn:

This was reinforced in Jeremiah 31:9

9 They shall come with weeping, and with supplications will I lead them: I will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters in a straight way, wherein they shall not stumble: for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn.

God considered Israel his first born son. They literally became a nation when God supernaturally rescued them from Egypt, separating the waters in the ocean until all of them literally cross over the water in dry land.

But as we all know, Israel broke their covenant of Law that was given at Mount Sinai. They killed or ignored all the prophets that God repeatedly sent to them when they were separated into 2 kingdoms and went into captivity under Babylon, and then under Persia.

Jesus used the parable of the tenants, one of my favorite parables to understand his first coming on Earth to Israel, in all 3 synoptic gospels. (Matthew 21:33-46; Mark 12:1-12; Luke 20:9-19) to illustrate this.

When Jesus and the 12 were preaching from Matt-John, they need to repent of rejecting God their Father in the OT, and believe in his Son is their promised King and Messiah, as foretold by their prophets.

God had mercy on them even when they killed his prophets (e.g. 2 Chronicles 24:20-22; Jeremiah 26:20-30; cf. Luke 13:34; Acts 7:52)., and is now sending his very own Son to Israel, to do a final persuasion to Israel to repent and believe in him.

If they do, as Jesus told Nicodemus in John 3, Israel will be born again.

That is why Paul never mentioned the necessity of being born again to us gentiles. That concept is irrelevant to us.

The first is a physical, literal, "flesh" birth (by amniotic "water") and the second is Spirit.

There are also those who would argue that Jesus mentions "living water" in John 4:10, 14; 7:37-39 and in John 7:38-39, we read - "He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. But this He spoke concerning the Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the source of living water and spiritual cleansing. If "water" is arbitrarily defined as baptism, then we could just as justifiably say, "Out of his heart will flow rivers of living baptism" in John 7:38. If this sounds ridiculous, it is no more so than the idea that water baptism is the source or the means of becoming born again.

Yet there are still others who would argue that "water" is used in the Bible as an emblem of the Word of God, and in such uses it is associated with cleansing or washing. The new birth is an experience that happens after turning to God in faith. It happens so many different ways for each of us that no one can make a pattern to follow.

The results are the same though. The old passes away, and the new exciting life in Christ (anointing of Holy Spirit) begins.

but I’d does not read born by water and born again by spirit it says born again by water AND the spirit

You needed to be born again if you were part of Israel during the period of John 3.

Paul makes no mention of being born again in Romans to Philemon, for us in the Body of Christ.
so there’s more than one salvation? You need more than one savior?

Are we to assume that Michal had children after she died?

First born does not imply a second born. An only child is still first born!

The 12 sons of Jacob are brothers but all are not the children of Leah and all are not the children of Rachel! They may be brothers and sisters but they are simply not the children of Blessed Mary ever Virgin mother of God!

That's the negative inference fallacy. Its not excluding all other possible sons or daughters . Just that Jesus is the focus here . Her first conception through the Holy Spirit was not twins.

It sounds like you equate being born again with being water baptized. However, that assumption is unwarranted. John 3:14 - And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. 18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who (is not water baptized? NO) does not believe is condemned already, because (he has not been water baptized? NO) he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
Faith is required for salvation but also baptism Mk 16:16 He who believes and is baptized shall be saved acts 8 the eunuch was baptized

Acts 22:16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

Rom 3:24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

Rom 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

Born of water and the Spirit fits perfectly with the scriptures that I shared with you in my post and does not negate John 3:5. It sounds like you may have an agenda to promote a biased church doctrine, namely baptismal regeneration.

St Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologica, III.28.3 (13th century):

"Without any hesitation we must abhor the error of Helvidius, who dared to assert that Christ's Mother, after His Birth, was carnally known by Joseph, and bore other children.

The blessed Mary mother of God, is a perpetual virgin to the glory of God!

Born of water and the Spirit fits perfectly with the scriptures that I shared with you in my post and does not negate John 3:5. It sounds like you may have an agenda to promote a biased church doctrine, namely baptismal regeneration.
He is also promoting the nonsense of Jesus having no other siblings (though they are identified in Scripture) as if sex within marriage is a sin. Before you know it, we'll be hearing that Mary is the second Eve and the mother off all, the queen of heaven, co-mediatrix along with Jesus, that we are to pray to dead people, and that we need to go through Mary to get to Jesus :rolleyes::oops::rolleyes:
