how to stop children from running inside

What do you do?

I thought of having furniture barriers or a string curtain.
Or maybe a hamster wheel for them.
signs dont work as they cant or dont read them.

If they dont listen and keep disobeying, do you just ban them for life or what. Tired of playing traffic cop. Solutions please!

I was hoping there would be a reply to my question actually. Not sure why children want to run INSIDE when theres a whole playground OUTSIDE they can run around in!

Im supposing if they hurt themselves, or others, it will be their own fault. It would be scary if those children grew up learning driving a car and didnt learn or ignored speed limits and crashed and died or hurt others as well.

well front page of the paper today was about boy racers who crashed into a power pole and injured themselves and damaged property but that still doesnt stop them despite residents constantly calling the police.

solution ban all boys from having cars or provide them with a race track/dodgem course where they can speed and crash to their hearts content?

I explained to my kids that running is for outside. I had to do the same with inside voice / outside voice as well.


sometimes if they were wound up and needed to run, I'd take them outside and tell them to run to the corner ... or the neighbor's driveway ... whatever distance was best for their age.

and I'd have them run more than once if needed ... you can tell when they've worn themselves out.

well they are from 5-11
and by 'my kids' I mean an entire school.
I got their teacher to deal with them, she banned the offenders from the library.

the children that come into the library for lessons usually know and comply and go outside but these kids dont have library class time at all so I dont suppose they know any better. However I thought they would at least know not to run inside and stop when someone tells them off.

I didn't realize you were talking about kids at school ... that's different than your own kids at home!!!

I'll ask my daughter. she's a teacher. she runs a pretty tight classroom and she might have ideas ...

Maybe incentives instead of punishments? Would you be allowed to print up "Good Behavior" tickets and pass them out to kids that are walking or speaking quietly, etc. You could keep a prize box (filled with cool pencils and erasers, candy, cute little toys, stickers...) for when the students cash in the tickets.

I don’t know if it’s primarily boys being the issue or not. But if I had to guess they are your main ones causing the issue and for very basic reasons as it’s the nature of a boy you are probably fighting. They are probably 1. bored and seeking adventure 2. They are needing a way to exert energy they have that’s not being sufficiently spent on the playground or at home after school. I’m betting they live pretty stationary mundane indoor lives at home.

I’ve been doing this men’s study group at church on a book called stepping up a call to courageous manhood by Dennis Rainey and it goes into explaining the boyhood stage and why some boys do what they do. You might check out his book. More specifically chapter 6- what every boy needs.
Another group to look into for wisdom might be trail life USA which is a Christ centered scouting group and their focus is on how to engage boys in learning and growing in the unique ways boys need. If might be worthy of a professional call into them perhaps.

well they have a bike track outside they can ride their bikes in, and an entire field to run around in so why they have to run inside I dont know.

problem with incentives is I have to be the police again all the time and doorman and librarian as well. Im not giving incentives just for walking lol. I can move my body too, I dont need a sticker for doing something so normal.
I already give incentives for READING cos, thats what you do in a library.

Even if they lived somewhere like the speedway where cars are allowed to race each other I dont know if it would solve the problem or make it worse. But I dont know if I can call in Forest and Bird or something.Getting outside people come in is also a burueacratic nightmare in a school. I think they have actually already had the Police came in and gave a talk.

I think kids these days have a lot more facitlites than we had when I was growing up. I just remember we couldnt go anywhere after school cos it was too dangerous, couldnt even cross the road. and if we walked round the negighbourhood we would most likely be bitten by dogs or taken by strangers or get called names. I guess thats why kids got into gangs, cos there was nothing else they could do.

That would be awesome. A walking wheel for kids who want to read and walk/run at the same time. (I used to read while walking to school so I know it can be done! lol)

If your school has a track or soccer field, spend a few weeks of PE classes teaching all the children how to walk around them. Play slow march music while they walk around the track.

Ok so this may help you. I asked my Step-dad who is an elementary school teacher (ages 6-11) what he does and when he sees people running he says "Thanks for walking" and it slows them down every time. Some sort of psychological trick. Either sarcastic or false sincerity variations I think.

Maybe it's that they want to deserve the thanks or what idk...but maybe worth a shot?

I can imagine that ticking me off but "throwing me off my stride" if I were younger. Or giving pause which suits the purpose.

when I see children enter and I see them geared up to run I just say loudly WALKING or remind them slow down, relax you in the library, no hurry

But bit hard to do at lunchtime when its open and children just wander in and out whenever they want.

Im the librarian.
The principal is going to work out something with the teachers hopefully because its unacceptable for children to run in the library and disturb everyone else.
I had issues with noise but the DP kind of gave up after a while and said well you have to let them be noisy. Obviously its an ongoing thing to teach children how to behave!

I went on a parents forum to see if parents had any solutions, scrolled through dozens of posts and none of them actually had anything concrete that worked! Some of the parents are like I run around inside WITH my children.

Im like what are they like behind the wheel of a car I wouldnt want to be in their care or passenger when they are speeding.
