Or just thoughts and interpretations. I was told that I could get some weed if I wanted it yesterday. I do not know if that is allowed or not. It is natural, wine is allowed in the good book, but I know too litlle scripture to make an informed stand on this issue. I only know that Jesus broke bread with sinners, so perhaps I should sit down and smoke with the sinner. Or is it so against the rules, that I must leave the room if people start to smoke it, and I do not even parttake in it? Many years since I smoked the stuff, always considered it legal in the bible, but back then I came to that standpoint as an atheist. I might get in this situation again in a day or two, maybe even tonight, though I doubt it. Since I want some input of knowledge first.

Scripture speaks to the importance of sobriety, which would include not using drugs recreationally :)

In and of itself, drinking is not a sin, and there are times in the Bible when it is recommended.

On the other hand, Jesus did not sit down with the sinners to sin with them.

Meaning, He did not sit around and hang out with people to drink and get drunk.

Is this what your friends do? Drink and smoke pot as a life style choice?

Hello mindfulzen,

"nor did they repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts." - Revelation 9:21

The scripture above is found after the sounding of the 6th trumpet, where those who will have not been killed by the previous plagues, still will not have repented of those things listed above, one of them being "Sorceries" which is translated from the word 'pharmakeia' which is where we get our English word 'Pharmaceuticals' from. Therefore, I believe this scripture is speaking in part about recreational drug use, of which the scripture states that those at that time will not repent of.

Strong's Concordance
pharmakeia: the use of medicine, drugs or spells
Original Word: φαρμακεία, ας, ἡ

Definition: the use of medicine, drugs or spells
Usage: magic, sorcery, enchantment.

pharmakeía (from pharmakeuō, "administer drugs") – properly, drug-related sorcery, like the practice of magical-arts, etc. (A. T. Robertson).

NAS Exhaustive Concordance
Word Origin
from pharmakeuó (to administer drugs)
Definition
the use of medicine, drugs or spells
NASB Translation
sorceries (1), sorcery (2).

=================================================

Recreational drug use is the use of a psychoactive drug to induce an altered state of consciousness either for pleasure or for some other casual purpose or pastime by modifying the perceptions, feelings, and emotions of the user. When a psychoactive drug enters the user's body, it induces an intoxicating effect. Generally, recreational drugs are divided into three categories: depressants; stimulants; and hallucinogens.

Tidying up some lose ends and doing a move. The person in question was my former bestfriend, cousin and potdealer. I think it is hard for him to sit soberminded and talk for a while. Not my idea to visit, I was invited. I was ambushed by him while visiting his mother, and had to say yes, when asked if I would pop downstairs afterwards. Bit of a liar who asked me in front of his mom. Did not have the heart to say no in front of her. Yes, potsmoking and drinking is the choice of lifestyle. He says he just got out of jail 3 months ago for a knife incident, claims to not have smoked pot in those three months because he was on probation untill recently. Messed up some stories, and admited that he had smoked again after that, but claimed to not have done it the first time he talked to me. I do not believe him, I am 99% sure that the first thing he did after getting out of jail was to get some pot and some beer, regardless of probation.

yes, getting advice before acting as always. You do not have to reply. I got the scripture version confirmed regarding the pharmakeia. You do you, if you go to any weed depository. Weed is illegal here, and in the bible too I think. No need to reply further, unless you have some verses regarding it. .

The problem with marijuana is that it is addictive. Alcohol can be, but not necessarily. Oddly enough, I read this article today:

https://crev.info/category/humanity/human_body/ (it's the article at the top of the list.)

In Genesis we read that God made everything good. There are some illnesses that can be treated with medicinal cannabis. But just as getting drunk affects the mind and so is not acceptable, so it is with recreational drugs. The other issue is that the creation has been affected by the fall of man. So what was harmless and even beneficial in Eden may well be harmful now.

I know some former addicts. They have nothing good to say about it. One I used to share a house with told me that he used to get stoned and play guitar. He thought he was the next Hendrix. He recorded one session (not that easy in those days). He said that it was terrible and he started to realise that it was not doing him good. I met him after he got saved and got free of drugs. I also know that it took him a few years to get his mind back to normal. His memory was poor, attention span no better and he had much trouble just thinking and following a conversation.

I know another man that has been using for at least 40 years. It was pain control for him. It has affected his mind terribly. He hears voices, he believes "Star Wars" is a documentary and that we are surrounded by aliens about to invade. He's harmless enough, but yeah, definitely in pixie territory.

I think you are correct. Should not smoke it, can be around people who are potheads still. Cannot happen now anyway, I have gotten a cold which makes it hard to inhale smoke, so it would be worse with weed. Masking up, doing the 2 meter thing again.

I am not going to argue with science, if it says weed has benefits for various illnesses that I have not been affected by. I accept medicinal usage, since it is the law of the land, since EU has decided that. This is about the biblical issue. No definitive answer, since hard alcohol has usage to clean wounds and disinfect other stuff, so a good in that regards. I do not really have an addictive personality, and it would be a onetime thing a few times perhaps. Because it is a social thing for people. Like accepting a spliff, not buying and use at home. A what would Jesus do kind of a thing. So, I have not read that Jesus drank wine, only that there was served wine at dinnerparties he attended.

It always starts with just one. Maybe even for some innocuous reason. Before long, you can't wait to hang out with that friend of yours whom you smoked with before. Next thing you know, all your friends are hanging and smoking and drinking, and there you are, right there in the middle with them. They are not your friends because you have a lot in common with them, or shared goals and values. They are your friends because birds of a feather flock together. Drunks and drug addicts are going to hang out with other drinkers and druggies, to eliminate as much as possible any friction from anyone who wants to get in the way of their habit. Perhaps instead of indulging with your friend, you could suggest avenues of restoration and recovery to him. Equip yourself with meeting lists and other community sponsored organizations that are there specifically to help people who want to quit the drink and drugs through peer support (such as AA and NA). There is a lot of help to be had for anyone looking for it, but one thing is pretty certain: he will not accept your help if he doesn't really want to quit.

Yes, but I do not think I have an addictive personality, and it is something about meeting people where they are comfortable, and putting yourself aside for a while. I will not see this friend after next month, or very sparsely. Not in person. We were very good friends in the past, some unresolved issues. We cannot talk, he is stressed, put the weed thing on the table without being direct. I am moving away now. I figure he is saying it is hard to talk without weed. If he needs it, should I say that it is OK? Should I do it a few times with him, before I move, and will nmot meet him for a long time? What would Jesus do? I have faith in myself in this regard now, it is just weed Not going full Bill Clinton, saying I will not inhale, but could do it less enthusiastic I guess too. Against drugs now.

Nobody gets to smoke where I go to. My house is drugfree, no drugpeople allowed at all. This is outside. Nobody will ever smoke a joint in my house unless this is a bad idea. Strict rules. Told people time and again, I do not visit them to smoke, they do not get to visit me and smoke. Thinking this is harsh if they need it, as I needed it in the past. They are not my friends, this is a former family member who usedt o be my dealer, that my family wants me to be cordial to. I am not telling them that, even if it is an open secret.I do not know if he is trying, but I see him hurting and stressing. So what would Jesus do? Me or them? Or him? Basically. I will most likely let the poll decide, and seems like I cannot smoke with him. But can let him smoke in front of me, based on comments. Try doing the poll people, if you can, this is tomorrow.

Being present while he smokes is fine if you know you will no be drawn/tempted to partake. I drank and did drugs for years before putting them down and never had a problem being around people who may have been using them while I was abstaining. I just do not see any reason why you must/should join him in his habit, and I think you would serve a much better example to him if you do not :) In fact, that is why AA and NA have so many success stories. People who no longer partake serve as role models to those who still struggle with the addiction, making it known it is possible to live a clean and sober life and still enjoy life as you are living it.

Again, I think the problem is overindulgence. I happen to hate weed myself, but I live where it is legalized.

It isn't going to put you in much of an altered state where you're talking to spirits and nonsense like that as it is with the Shamanistic drugs. But the people who use it simply to chill use it sparingly.

Those who overindulge over decades get that distinctive cheeseball accent.

Tl;dr, I think it is reasonable to treat weed like alcohol, biblically.

And again, I hate the stuff. I won't let my future kids have any unless they need it medicinally. I want to find a biblical reason to rule it out, but can't.

There are plenty of verses that speak to the preference for sobriety :)

People who regularly use drugs recreationally to alter their mood could not generally be said to be sober...

Perhaps this is experience talking more than anything, but you can use cannabis without going sky high. There is that median of buzz that the Bible in fact praises. Why else would wine make the heart glad?

Yes, I did say that drinking was recommended at times in the Bible, yet the importance of sobriety is given precedence :)

You have been helpful folks. I am going for a visit today if it suits people. I got a hunch if it should come up. Just going to borrow some tools and a knife to slice bread. Quite tired, so it should not take long.

Of course sobriety takes precedence. That isn't the crux of the discussion we are having. The question is whether weed is lawful in moderation.

Healthy eating habits take precedence, but that doesn't mean you can't have desert from time to time.

Sex could also be considered an appetite, yet is prescribed under certain conditions only, not for random pleasure aside from such.

The question was whether OP should join his friend while said friend smoked dope.

I said no. I think you would, too :)

Bread's a good thing.
