Water baptism is symbolic to the cleansing that must take place in the heart. The actual baptism is your outward expression to show the world that you are now united with Christ because your heart has changed and will continue to hold fast to that which God has told us. (Romans 10:9 -10)

Can water baptism wash away one's sin?

The concept of baptism washing away sin stems from Acts 22:16, TEV. “And now, why wait any longer? Get up and be baptized and have your sins washed away by calling on His name.”

Does this mean you can was away your sins through baptism? Let us look at Biblical evidence. How is baptism described in the Bible?

Romans 6:2-7, NIV. "We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Or don ’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life."

Col 2:12: “Having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.”

Mark 16:16-17: “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.”

Baptism represents a decision to believe in Jesus as our Saviour. Through baptism we publicly demonstrate that we believe in our salvation obtained through Jesus, who died for us and rose on the third day. Similarly we symbolically indicate that by accepting Jesus in our lives, we are experiencing a rebirth, our old self has died, we are a new creation through Jesus Christ.

Jesus made this clear when discussing the importance of baptism with a scholar named Nicodemus. John 3:3-8: “’In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.’

‘How can a man be born when he is old?’ Nicodemus asked. ‘Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb to be born!’

Jesus answered, ‘I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, `You must be born again.' The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.’" NIV

It is clear here that baptism doesn’t wash away sin, but is an outward declaration that we want to live with Jesus who is the only one who can forgive our sins. It cannot be intended that the external rite of baptism was sufficient to make you pure, but that it was an ordinance appointed by Jesus as a public expression of the washing away of sins, or of the purification of the heart.

Forgiveness of sins is obtained solely through faith in the Lord Jesus, Acts 10:43: ”All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name."

Baptism is the visible sign of this. Paul summarizes this beautifully in 1 Cor 6:11: “And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”

What a wonderful Saviour we do have! Would you like to accept Him in your life now? He can and will forgive you of your sins, no matter how horrible they are. He can transform your life from an ugly charcoal into a radiant butterfly. You can overcome your sins through our Lord and Saviour. Why wait any longer? He is waiting for you!
Please read the scriptures you present, they all point to the fact that one's obedience to water baptism in the name of the Lord Jesus is for the remission of one's sin. Many have no idea that the forerunners of the Catholic church stopped using the name of the Lord Jesus in water baptism. This distortion has caused many to fail to see that one's sins are forgiven through obedience to the God-given command to be water baptized in his name.

Acts 2:38
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Acts 22:16
And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

that's dishonest and typical of a response from you

you utterly REFUSE to reply to any scripture that actually illustrates your error

does it occur to you that the remission of sins is through the name of Jesus only? and that it is calling on the name of the Lotrd that washes away your sins?

didn't think so

the many are correct

you are wrong and the Bible agrees with the many and not your baptismal regeneration cult like beliefs

to say that no one is saved until they are water baptized is demonic. the blood of Christ washes away our sins...not you and your rubber ducky in the water

is demonic a strong accusation? you betcha.

well I guess you didn't read my post 556 since you did not respond to it so I am posting it again in response to your trying to evade dealing with scripture that contradicts your presentations AND I shortened it a bit so you have less to read. please deal with scripture that tells us that water baptism is not a part of salvation and is actually an ordinance to follow but it represents our lives in Christ

I have NEVER read where you deal with that.

The concept of baptism washing away sin stems from Acts 22:16, TEV. “And now, why wait any longer? Get up and be baptized and have your sins washed away by calling on His name.”

So you disagree with what scripture clearly states.

What part of my response was lost on you? I absolutely agree with Scripture. I don't agree with you.

I was pointing out that seeking God leads to God answering. Sometimes you have to do like Moses and get alone with God if you need him to guide you.

I thought about pointing you to read the scriptures when the holy ghost was poured out and received as Paul or Peter or John laid hands on them (which is oddly specific timing if it were entirely up to God) but you could be one of those who simply says "God's word in Acts doesn't apply to us today"....and what could I say to someone willing to throw out God's word as irrelevant.?

I know that last paragraph probably sounds snide but I'm not sure how to WORD that if a person just throws out parts of truth, the meaning of other passages gets subverted. YES, I realize you could think that refers to me, and in some ways I won't even argue because I KNOW that I don't have perfect understanding and it subverts my other understandings, etc... And the truth is that anyone who is subverted like that WON"T be able to get themselves out of it by reasoning (because their reasoning is flawed), which means they CANNOT lean on their own understanding. So the only thing that person can reliably do is go straight to Jesus and ASK GOD. (because any man, pastor, teacher, etc that they ask could be flawed too). I was just 'fortunate' enough to have been raised in a church with flawed doctrine so I had to learn to be led by God. If you'd rather trust your own thinking and your pastor as if neither could be blind or subverted, without asking God until he ANSWERS....well... I still don't know of any other more reliable source than God himself.

John 6:45 KJV
It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.
John 6:65 KJV
And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.
John 6:43-44 KJV
Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves. [44] No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

All of those verses are saying that if you don't learn to get in your prayer closet and learn how to hear from God directly, you're going to miss Jesus.

Love in Jesus,
Kelby
I've read the Scriptures, thank you.. and I have found your opinion wanting.

I replied to the scriptures you shared. You just refuse to even consider what I pointed out.

I cannot reject what the bible clearly states. It connects obedience to water baptism in the name of Jesus being done for the remission of sin.

I'll leave you with a thought. When is the blood of Jesus applied to the believer according to the word?

Jesus said,

"Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it."

Wansvic, I would love to hear about your story. How were you compelled to be baptized before you called on the Lord? Did you just show up at a baptism at some church and at that moment repent and ask forgiveness as you were being dunked? Did you not believe on the Lord before you showed up for that dunking?

You are equating this with your belief in water regeneration? Even you must know that's a stretch at best.

Fulfillment of what Peter stated in Acts 10:43 occurred in Acts 10:47-48. Peter initially stated this in Acts 2:38. Those who believe in Jesus' death, burial and resurrection will be water baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus for the remission of sin. Jesus sent Paul to Ananias who gave him the same instruction.
You have missed the point again.

Cornelius was saved AND indwelt with the Holy Spirit BEFORE being water baptized.

"Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven." Matt. 7:21
Continue on with the next 2 verses. They show what this crowd is basing their entrance into heaven on: their own works. No mention at all of faith in Christ for salvation.

Obedience is not optional.
And context is key, of course.

Jesus is the author of eternal salvation unto all them that OBEY him. (Heb. 5:9)
Jesus said that those who believe possess (have) eternal life in John 5:24.
Then Jesus said that recipients of eternal life (I give them eternal life) shall never perish in John 10:28.

What a person needs to obey for salvation is simply receiving the free gift of eternal life by faith. Those who do shall never perish.

Jesus said that. Do you believe Jesus?

Acts 2:1-4
And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Acts 10:45
45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Why do you think these verses mean "infilled"? They were FILLED, not "infilled".

I said the word is not biblical and so far, you haven't shown any verse that uses that made up word.

I also asked if you could explain the difference between indwelling and filling.

Can you?

I can explain. (sorry to but in)

"Indwelling" means it's in there. "FULL" means there's so much of it in there that there's (at that time) no room for anything else..like sin.

The bible denotes specific occasions when a person or group was FULL OF the Holy Ghost rather than just that the person or group has the Holy Ghost.., and special things would happen. The bible says Stephen was FULL of the Holy Ghost towards the end of them stoning him. He saw heaven open. He wasn't afraid. He wasn't concerned for his own well-being. His concern was for those stoning him. He was NOT sinning. There was no room for sin at that moment. <--FULL
