But believing isn't works. Scripture says so. Eph 2:8,9 and Rom 4:4,5

When Jesus addressed the crowd in John 6 and said "the work that God requires is to believe on His Son", He was speaking tongue-in-cheek. The Jews were very works oriented. So He used that word on them.

But believing isn't a work. Rom 4:4,5 shows us that works EARN something; wages. Our belief doesn't earn us anything. God's gift of salvation is by grace, not by works.
Jesus was speaking tongue-in-cheek? I don't think so. The point is that God's work isn't "work".

Why do people get so upset with this topic?

We are saved by grace....through faith....God doesn't believe for us. We choose to put our faith in Him, and when we do he saves us through grace. Not by any works that we could do...because there is no work that we could ever do to nullify our sin. That took the blood of Jesus and that is the only way to be saved is through faith in Him.

After we are saved, works will follow. It is the works that Jesus does in us. It's pretty plain to me. Not some works that we did on our own to somehow please God so that we can get rewarded or get praise from men by bragging and boasting about our works ...It is Jesus working in us.

After we are saved, if we don't believe and have faith that Jesus is now in us and working in and through us... then something is wrong.

What was your answer to the poll?:)
I didn't answer the poll yet, because I wasn't sure I understood the question.
I'm still not sure.
I get that Abraham's faith was counted as righteousness. But I think if your faith never results in any works that's because it died. If Abraham just gave up trying to have Issac, would god consider his faith alive? I don't know.

So then you agree that faith without works Is alive to GOD but faith without works Is dead to men.🥰

Works is vastly miss stated concerning the Bible.
The Bible teaches that no one can achieve eternal salvation by works. Example a billionaire cannot give the church a million dollars a month and be a sinner and achieve eternal salvation. Precisely what the Bible is addressing when mentioning works with caution.

You have “GOD“ and you have men.Is faith without works dead or alive to “GOD” ?The question Is NOT Is faith without works alive or dead to “men”?
Abrahams Faith was counted as righteos BEFORE he did works so then Is faith without works dead or alive to “GOD”?

Romans 4:1-2
King James Version

1 What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found?

2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath [whereof] to glory; but not before God.

We can all agree that works by the believer is in response to God’s love for us. We serve Him because we love Him and want to please Him. We love our neighbors, we share our testimony, we share the gospel to unreached people in foreign lands, we teach Sunday school. Amen and amen!

But we are saved by grace. All of our righteousness is as filthy rags. If we confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe that God has raised Him from the dead, we will be saved. Works is not in that equation.

Yes. The work of God is to believe on the One whom He has sent.
Yes,the work of “GOD“ IS to believe on the one HE has sent but does believing by men come from the heart or Is It a physical thing?

Some are saying that the thief on the cross’s faith WAS a work.

I don't understand your question. Can you rephrase it?

I can't say that my "works" are a response to God's love for me. They are a result of Him living inside of me... and I listen to Him. It's really Him doing the work, not me.

I was wondering what the majority of the community thought about this question.
No amount of works saves us. No amount of works justify us. The only faith that justifies is the faith of Jesus Christ. The faith of Christ justifies the one who believes the gospel.

Do you believe that believing In JESUS IS work because post #8 believes that the thief on the cross did work,IOW,I think he Is saying that work can be physical or spiritual IDK and I was wondering If you believe the same thing post #8 believes?

It's the work of God, which doesn't even remotely resemble what humans think of as work.

The thief on the cross through faith, witnessed to the non believer. I wouldn't say his faith is work, but his witnessing would be.
This thief shows such a strong faith in Jesus's ability to take him to heaven.

I can't help but think about Jesus's feeling of being forsaken by God

Even though he was counted righteous before he did the works, I still don't consider his faith "faith without works" because he eventually did the works.
So, I guess I'd have to know the definition of "faith without works". Is it..

-I believe in God's promises, so I will do what he says because I trust in him?
-I believe in God's promises, and he will take care of everything, so I don't have to do anything?
