Hannah is thankful to God for the son she has received. Then we are told about Eli the priest and his two sons. But they are bad men living in the House of God. They don’t care about the offerings to God, they take what they want, they do what they want in front of the Jews who come to the temple. It seems to be that there are no limits to their depravation! Hannah gets three more sons and two daughters! Eli is getting older and he knows that his sons are acting badly and having sex with women. Eli tries to make them change their way. So a man of god comes and warns Eli and tells him that his two sons are going to die and God will replace them by a faithful priest.

In each story we always find goodness and badness. Both are on each side of the border, each one enhances the other. It's a kind of two dimensional situation. It also helps us to visualize where we are. Hannah is loved by her husband and she is hated by her husband's other wife. There are bad priests in the temple of God and Samuel arrives!

Sadly, the House of God is not a good place because of Eli's sons! And they are really bad! Many people would wonder what's going on! But we live in a human society and if we serve God we are not going to stop because of other human beings otherwise it's better to stop all at once and go and live on a desert island!

Think about the difference when people learn a language when they are young and when they are teenagers or adults: it makes a big difference!

Samuel is also an incredible example of faith and of faithfulness. Right at the beginning he had at the same time an advantage and a disadvantage. An advantage because he was educated in the house of God so he learned how to work for God since his youth. A disadvantage because he could see the bad examples of the two sons of Eli who were abusing their position. But it is good to see good and bad examples and their consequences. He could also see the differences between God’s decisions and men’s decisions especially when the Israelites asked for a human king and the fact that everything went wrong. Anyway, Samuel kept faithful till his death. Definitely another good role model.

In the Bible we only get pieces of life otherwise it would be too big. Thus many pieces are missing. But there is so much to learn about faithful men. We must get with what we have. So we must put pieces together and it is like a patchwork or a puzzle.

EPHRAÏM (lieu)

Le texte actuel, avec ses surcharges, rend très pénible l'intelligence du récit. Ce pays, lui aussi montagneux, était couvert de forêts (Jos 17:18), d'où son nom. C'est là que se joua le dernier acte de la révolte d'Absalom, qui y trouva la mort (2Sa 18:6). La forêt d'Éphraïm, qui faisait suite à celles, non moins célèbres, de Basan, a aujourd'hui complètement disparu.

Expression courante pour caractériser la nature montagneuse de la région occupée par la tribu d'Éphraïm, et devenue la détermination géographique de toute la contrée (Jug 17:1 19:1,18) ; on entendait donc par là tout l'ensemble du pays. Sichem est dit « sur la montagne d'Éphraïm », quoique dans une vallée, au pied des monts Ébal et Garizim (1Ro 12:25).
