people tend to focus on this instruction, but sometimes do not seem to realize there are other instructions and purpose for the use of tongues

are you aware of those?

True that,

  1. 1 Corinthians 14:26-27
So, brothers and sisters, what should you do? When you meet together, one person has a song, another has a teaching, and another has a new truth from God. One person speaks in a different language, and another interprets that language. The purpose of whatever you do should be to help everyone grow stronger in faith.
When you meet together, if anyone speaks to the group in a different language, it should be only two or no more than three people who do this. And they should speak one after the other. And someone else should interpret what they say.
Amen!

How do you speak in Tongues ? Acts chapter 2 as the Holy Spirit give you the ability to do so.
When was it done in the bible?
Acts chapter 2, 10, 19 and taught in 1cor chapter 12 through 14
Is there any conditions on who can speak in tongues? The person must be saved and willing to be used by the Holy Spirit 1cor chapter 12

It doesn't make sense

Please read my posts from 44 on....

If you are given the gift of tongues by the Spirit and you speak words that you do not understand our anyone around you understands then who does it profit?

"God gave you words that no one understands so that the spirit can interpret it into words for God to hear."

If you praise God and know what you are saying it profits you and God.

We are told to try the Spirits and that means we need to understand what we are saying and doing. Blindly speaking words that are not known to you can not be tested or tried to know if they are good or bad.

Bad angels are able to deceive people.

1Jn 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
Mat 24:24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.

It is a well know fact that the word "tongues" is "languages"

G1100 = glōssa = Of uncertain affinity; the tongue; by implication a language....

Act 2:3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
Act 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues (glōssa), as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Act 2:5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
Act 2:6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
Act 2:7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?
Act 2:8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue (glōssa), wherein we were born?

Why do i need to speak in a mysterious language to speak to God? God understands all languages and the Holy Spirit can interpret all languages into the Heavenly language. Why not just speak in the language we can understand?

Maybe you are saying bad things about God and blaspheming His name? You would not know if you do not know what you are saying.

1Co 14:6 Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues(glōssa) , what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?
1Co 14:7 And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?
1Co 14:8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?
1Co 14:9 So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue(glōssa) words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.
1Co 14:18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues(glōssa) more than ye all:
1Co 14:19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue(glōssa).

1Co 14:15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with those that understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with those that understanding also.

LOL the topic is not for this thread but do what you like :)
The topic was introduced into this thread at the foot of page 9 post #171 - and the context of that post is clear enough. It is where the doctrine of cessation comes from.

1509-1564
John Calvin
  • John Calvin (1509-1564): "Calvin noted that glossolalia had not merely facilitated preaching in foreign languages but had also served as an "adornment and honour of the Gospel itself.'' This second ability had been "corrupted" by human "ambition" (e.g., Corinth), and, Calvin reflected, it was not at all strange that God had chosen to remove glossolalic utterances from the church rather than permitting them "to be vitiated with further abuse." (Calvin, Acts, I, 318) (The Charismatic Movement, 1975, Michael P. Hamilton, p 73)
It wasn't a topic or a meaning I introduced into this thread. And yet another poster @SophieT tells me that I introduced the subject of Calvinism by which I believe she meant at page 13 post #258 where I mentioned Calvinism in context of describing the community in which a revival occurred and where the baptism of the Holy Spirit is mentioned along with the term fire falling and trances and believers being thrown on top of one another after a sixteen year old boy had a vision - well you would think all of that would stir some enthusiasm for the teaching of the baptism of the Holy Spirt and its benefits. And you must know all of that because it was to yourself that I made the post herein numbered as #258. But no - it attracted contempt by the wise sister and mistaken accusation and claims to having an agenda and being manipulative and on and on after which I sense that either I stop posting or else I will find no means to say anything at all - unless of course I just post smileys and amusing expressions that can offend no one at all. She also tells me that I won't get what I came for in this forum and that my discernment isn't as good as I think. Well to be honest with you it doesn't take discernment to read English does it?

Then you tell me "let us leave the Calvinist out of this" - presumably to make peace in some way - and by peace that would necessarily mean I stop mentioning Calvinism - regardless of the fact that I am as far removed from the veritable Calvin on the issue of the cessation of the baptism of the Holy Spirit and the gifts of the Holy Spirit as the charismatic church is removed from true discernment.

Still I suppose I can take some comfort from knowing that you have now told me that I can post what I want. In truth I sense that no one is free to post anything if it irks a sister who says she has refuted Calvinism and appears determined to bind a man with her wisdom. Perhaps I should just take some lessons from the Word of Faith brigade and start to develop a positive confession precept to avoid any conflict with a wise woman that happens along and imagines that I will yield to the sophistry of words.

Do you think if we brought to light all of the Documentation concerning John Calvin, it will bid well for those who follow him?

We have Court Documents, that put a light upon him, that should make everyone rethink considering his words as something we should build our beliefs upon!
