Superstitions/ Old Wives Tale/ Fables

Hi,thought this might be fun or it may open our eyes!
1 Tim 4:7 But refuse profane and old wives Fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.
Titus1:4 Not giving heed to Jewish fables,and commandments of men,that turn from truth.


I'm sure many of us were told by our Mothers or Grandmother's to do this it will help or don't do this on certain days.

There are MANY superstitions about this or that. Thought we might share some together and see how they stack up to the word.

Around here we have a superstition about pocket knives. If you open a pocket knife, nobody else will DARE close it. You have to be the one to close that thing, or it will stay open until eternity.

The only thing I can get out of these people is some fuzzy guess that if they close a pocket knife somebody else opened then they will cut themselves on a knife at some point in the future. So if they do break this superstition, the next time they cut themselves they will of course blame it on that time nine years ago when they closed a pocket knife.

There's a superstition on the job that if you say the word "busy" or "slow" it will magically summon business. I'm not sure how they think it works, and I have proven it wrong multiple times (much to their distress, when I stand in the corner chanting "busy busy busy slow slow slow" in a deliberate attempt to get some business going on a slow day) but they still believe it. If you talk about how busy we are or how slow it has been, they believe it will summon customers out of thin air.

What REALLY calls up customers is when I try to get something done. We can be totally dead, but if I make a move to gather trash up, ZOOOOOOM here comes a whole fleet of cars homing in like sidewinder missiles. It never fails.

When I'm walking down the sidewalk, I still consider that if I step on a crack I could break my mother's back, and she really doesn't need any more problems.

These always scared me when I was a kid:

If a bird flies into your house from outside, it is a sign of death of someone in the family.

If a black cat crosses your path, then you will have bad luck unless you go

Also, something about cats shouldn't be around babies because they could suffocate a baby by get in their face because of the smell of milk on the baby's breath.

Even though, I know that the first two are just superstation....I'm still not very fond of birds or cats to this day.

I too have heard one about knives. If you give someone a set of knives make them give you a penny's price so your friendship won't be cut.

I always wondered why when I go shopping and make small talk with the cashier and say something like wow you're slow or busy today they'd look at me all weird like I just cussed or something.

Guess, I know why now...lol

Not sure if they are official superstitions, however, have been to some professional sports games. When my team got down other fans would holler things like lets turn our hat inside out and backwards, turn your shirt inside out, put your shoes on the wrong feet, and etc. Either these were real unknown superstitions to me to help your team rally from behind or when I was walking up to find my seat they said get a load of this rube wonder what kind of stupid stuff we can make him do....LOL

hmm my grandmothers not being Jewish I didnt hear too many Jewish fables from them.

Though my mother did read Animal Farm which is kind of like a fable. When I read it I didnt know at first it was like an allegory about communism. However cant be said to be an old wives tale since George Orwell wrote it (real name Eric Arthur Blair)

Aesops fables would they be considered 'old wives tales'? Tortoise and the hare? Little Red Hen? Henny Penny?

Fairy tales...well I never paid that much attention to those. But here is one I refuse to believe its when parents talk about the tooth fairy, easter bunny, and flying reindeer.

as for superstitions, here is one that my mother had

Never put a mirror opposite the bed. I'm not too sure why but its a Chinese superstition to do with either ghosts or devils snatching your soul away or a portent of death.

Or its simply bad feng shui

My ex MIL used to tell the grands.....If they had a wart on their fingers to hide a dirty dish towel where no one can find it and the wart will go away🤷‍♂️
