I find deuteronomy 22:28 very interesting.

deuteronomy 22:28 "“Suppose a man has intercourse with a young woman who is a virgin but is not engaged to be married. If they are discovered," Interesting this sin is not covered in the list of sexual sins given the death penalty. In this verse it is consensual sex, not rape. There is no sin offering. Also the part, "IF THEY ARE DISCOVERED" It appears Deut 22:28 treats this fornication, less than adultery, yet churches and pastors don't seem to care if a Christian is married 2,3, 4 times. which Jesus and Paul treat as far worse.

The man who lay with her must pay the young woman’s father fifty shekels of silver, and she
must become his wife because he has violated her. He must not divorce her as long as he lives.

If her father absolutely refuses to give her to him, the man still
must pay an amount comparable to the bridal price of a virgin.

Also in Exodus 22:16 If a man seduces a virgin who is not pledged in marriage
and sleeps with her, he must pay the full dowry for her to be his wife.

There is no punishment, no sin offering. The payment is only made if they are found out.

I think young men being made to marry any woman they sleep with would consider it punishment.

And probably the young women, too, would see it that way.

That is not punishment, it's taking responsibility.

Right. And people are soooo good at doing that. Right? :devilish:

Of choosing to do the right thing? Instead of being compelled to?

still....There is no punishment, no sin offering. The payment is only made if they are found out. Unlike other sexual sins where the punishment is death.

If they are caught. And the consequences may not seem dire to you, but for the woman?

And he shall take a wife in her virginity. A widow, or a divorced woman, or
a woman who has been defiled, or a prostitute, these he shall not marry.

Fornication was still considered sexual immorality.

For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality;
that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor...

This was required of the priest ONLY. This did not apply to the population. It appears GOD is more forgiving of fornication (sex between two consenting adults) than the church or many in the church.

It appears Deut 22:28 treats this fornication, less than adultery
Yes, adultery is worse than mere fornication because in the case of mere fornication, no one's spouse is being defrauded and the 2 transgressors can still preserve the "one-partner-for-life" principle by getting married.

“No man ought to transgress and defraud his brother in [fornication] because the Lord is the avenger in all these things” (1 Thessalonians 4:6)

Both testaments forbid fornication. But adultery is worse.

Something you may have not noticed...God divorced Israel (Jer 3:8). God sympathizes with the divorced more than you may realize.

I understand, adultery is worse than fornication, but you wouldn't know that from the way the church treats singles, compared to those who marry 2,3,4 times.

I hadn't caught that part... thanks for pointing it out :)

Still, a "defiled" woman was very much looked down/frowned upon, and in some ways, still is.

Which seems odd, given that men are encouraged to sow their wild oats. Another male-driven double standard.

Look at what happened when Dinah was defiled. Even though "He loved the young girl and spoke tenderly to her."

I think some churches treat singles who fornicate worse than divorcees because fornicators tend to habituate a lifestyle of ongoing sin choices, while each event of divorce is a single choice. The Bible warns a great deal about practicing (habitual) sin.

To illustrate,
Even though sin "A" may be worse than sin "B",
a person who makes a habit of sin "B" for many years probably does more damage than someone who commits sin "A" a few times.

That is probably the reasoning behind many congregations attitudes toward these sins.

Were you aware that God divorced Israel?

GOD did divorce Israel, but he did not kill Israel. You can make restitution for fornication, (paying a the father) but you cannot for adultery.

I agree there is a double standard.

Deuteronomy 22, 28 id a reiteration of exodus 22: 16 and 17
“If a man entices a virgin who is not betrothed, and lies with her, he shall surely pay the bride-price for her to be his wife. If her father utterly refuses to give her to him, he shall pay money according to the bride-price of virgins.
Exodus 22:16‭-‬17 NKJV

"If they are caught" ;because you cant hardly do anything if you dont catch them. However this does not make it not a sin. Fornication is strictly listed as a sin.

Note: fornicators in this list pf sin.

Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.
I Corinthians 6:9‭-‬11 NKJV
https://bible.com/bible/114/1co.6.9-11.NKJV

Then Paul follows up with a particular warning about sexual sin.

Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?
I Corinthians 6:18‭-‬19 NKJV
https://bible.com/bible/114/1co.6.18-19.NKJV

Also notice in exodus if the father forbids the marriage the man still pay 50 shekels of silver.
So he pays the bride price is not allowed to have the bride if the father forbids, or is also not allowed to ever under any circumstances to divorce her. These passages are not giving any pass to fornicators.

Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.” 1 Corinthians 6:16 is about sex with a prostitute. That was part of the temple worship.

"But since sexual immorality is occurring, each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman with her own husband. " 1 Corinthians 7:2 He doesn't tell them to flee, but to get married.

I get fed up with Christians who have been married 2 or 3 times teling singles "If you even think of sex you have sinned" or even trying to tell singles what they can and cannot do on a date.

First off I never said to think of sex is a sin.
The Bible tells those things what to do and bot to do.. If you have a problem with scripture thats on you.
If you have a problem with what a repented sinner did in his past; take that up with Jesus.
Its not an excuse to endorse a sinful lifestyle.
