There is a lot the Bible admonishes us to Not Do on the Sabbath. My dilemma is what can we DO? I spend some time in prayer, some time reading the Word, and then I am stumped. I physically cannot sit around all day and end up just doing things (renovations on house etc) that are self-serving. What is acceptable to God on this day? What sort of things do YOU do to keep the Sabbath?
At the creation God hallowed the 7th day after 6 days of work. This is before the Old Covenant was given. Under the Old Covenant there were many rules about the observance. The Old Covenant was completed and fulfilled in Jesus Christ, so the Jewish rules about how to observe that 7th day after 6 days of work no longer apply.

"Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their multitude. And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all the work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all the work that he had done in creation." (Gen 2:1-3 NRSV)

"Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God; you shall not do any work—you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns." (Exod 20:8-10 NRSV)

God worked 6 days and rested on the 7th and hallowed it. Work 6 rest 1 and focus on God. This is repeated in Exodus 20:8-10. As far as the Old Covenant restrictions on the Hebrew sabbath, those were abolished, annulled and fulfilled in Jesus Christ. The church continued the observance of one day being special after six days of work, but honored our Lord by making the day after six days of work, the first day of the week, his resurrection day, the Lord's Day. But even then, there is NOT a command about a particular day of the week. Christians follow the early church example of honoring the 1st day of the week but it is not given as a command or a change from the sabbath law in the Old Covenant. The rules about the Old Covenant sabbath no longer apply.

"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age.” (Matt 28:19-20 RSV)

NOWHERE IN THE NEW COVENANT ARE CHRISTIANS COMMANDED TO OBSERVE THE SABBATH!!

"Therefore I have reached the decision that we should not trouble those Gentiles who are turning to God, but we should write to them to abstain only from things polluted by idols and from fornication and from whatever has been strangled and from blood. For in every city, for generations past, Moses has had those who proclaim him, for he has been read aloud every sabbath in the synagogues.” (Acts 15:19-21 NRSV) THERE IS NOTHING HERE PUTTING THE SABBATH LAW AS A REQUIREMENT ON THE GENTILE CHRISTIANS

"Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a sabbath. These are only a shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ." (Col 2:16-17 RSV)

Vincent Word Studies on Col. 2:16 -
"Sabbath days [σαββατων] . The weekly festivals. Rev., correctly, day, the plural being used for the singular. See on Luk 4:31; Act 20:7. The plural is only once used in the New Testament of more than a single day (Act 17:2). The same enumeration of sacred seasons occurs 1Ch 33:31; 2Ch 2:4; 2Ch 31:3; Eze 45:17; Hos 2:11."

"So then, there remains a sabbath rest for the people of God;" (Heb 4:9 RSV)

Adam Clarke comment on Heb. 4:9 -
"There, remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.] It was not, 1. The rest of the Sabbath; it was not, 2. The rest in the promised land, for the psalmist wrote long after the days of Joshua; therefore there is another rest, a state of blessedness, for the people of God; and this is the Gospel, the blessings it procures and communicates, and the eternal glory which it prepares for, and has promised to, genuine believers.

There are two words in this chapter which we indifferently translate rest, καταπαυσις and σαββατισμος. the first signifying a cessation from labour, so that the weary body is rested and refreshed; the second meaning, not only a rest from labour, but a religious rest; sabbatismus, a rest of a sacred kind, of which both soul and body partake. This is true, whether we understand the rest as referring to Gospel blessings, or to eternal felicity, or to both."

The First London Confession of Faith, 1646, a Particular Baptist Confession, does not include teaching the Ten Commandments, but only the commandments of Christ our King! It is a New Covenant confession focused on Jesus Christ.

heres the thing the seventh day sabbath is according to this creation

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭1:1‬ ‭KJV‬‬

but

“The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant. Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left.”
‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭24:5-6‬ ‭

The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again.”
‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭24:20‬ ‭KJV‬‬

and so

“For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.”
‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭65:17‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“but the heavens and the earth, ( which were created in six days ) which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.”
‭‭2 Peter‬ ‭3:7, 10, 13‬ ‭KJV‬‬

because Christian’s are walking by faith in a new creation and are not of this worlds kingdom the sabbath is about the old Jesus is about the new and like your saying nowhere did Jesus command a sabbath based on the new creation his kingdom to which we chrirtians belong

we aren’t beholden to anything Moses said we can learn about Jesus from it but it isn’t our law , we Christian’s are beholden tonthe commands Jesus have not Moses nor the fiery pillar on Sinai we are complete on Christ and his gospel there’s nothing added or taken from it it’s already complete for us to have all our faith in Christ and his word

though God stopped working after six days he began working again on the New Testament and a new creation after the law was broken

“Thou hast heard, see all this; and will not ye declare it? I have shewed thee new things from this time, even hidden things, and thou didst not know them. They are created now, and not from the beginning; even before the day when thou heardest them not; lest thou shouldest say, Behold, I knew them.”
‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭48:6-7‬ ‭

But, we are not "bound" by what was taught in the OT as the Jewish nation was.
The Bible says that God found fault with the Old Covenant, and therefore He established the New Covenant/Testament in Christ.

For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second. For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a New Covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: (Heb 8:7,8)

I don't think the OP is being trollish but people are answering in their own usual way to try to help.

OP just wants to know what else to do on the Sabbath day to honor God other than what they've already listed.

‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭31:31-32‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy....

What does "holy" mean?
Some of this talk here and all over the world its as if He never came and died. The words come and go yet they still treat it as if they(man) were made for the Sabbath. Then they debate what they .. who are they? Not Israel.. more debate its for the lost and saved.... anyway what they should keep doing and don't have to do anymore. The 12 (with Paul) talked about this made it clear.. not to add burdens. Going backwards not forwards here.. IN through Christ. No offense but it us amazing how real He is not. We have His word and were told He is in us and we are one but just can't pray and talk and ask Him. He's not going to be posting through some unknown or known on some Christian forum or anywhere else telling believers what they really need to be "obeying". He seems to be a personal God. See you have to want this. As long as you don't want it don't believe in what ever His word says He will not force you beg you make you do anything. His "Children" do this.

You say NO! HE says ok. You really want to know ask Him then He will tell you. Seems where your heart is really matters to Him. What some random believer even me says....haha who cares. Other then Jesus came in the flesh and one must be born again you best listen other then that you don't have to. Get over it its not about you and you can't control others. Sorry knowing Jesus your still human and have those flaws.

As for Holy hornetguy..

Reminds me of the song "what do I know of Holy".
"So What do I know of You
Who spoke me into motion?
Where have I even stood
But the shore along Your ocean?
Are You fire? Are You fury?
Are You sacred? Are You beautiful?
So What do I know? What do I know of Holy?

"Then I caught a glimpse of who You might be
The slightest hint of You brought me down to my knees"

As for Holy hornetguy..
I like that.... sounds like something Robin would have said to Batman....

I was asking the OP if they knew what the definition of "holy" was.... since the Jews were told to remember the sabbath and "keep it holy"
I wanted some feedback from them, to get an idea of what THEY thought was involved in keeping something holy. I didn't want to hear what the Jews said to do, I wanted their thoughts on what that meant.... what it would look like, lived out.

I know what the definition is (so does Magenta :)) but I was trying to stimulate some discussion, with the goal of working through the questions they had. Since there has been no feedback from the OP since the 5 or 6 comments on the first page, it makes me wonder how involved they truly are in this discussion....

Your really saying that salvation is through Jesus plus obedience to the law.
No, not 'the Law'. But my (perhaps wrong) understanding is that Jesus fulfilled the law, but the 10 commandments are not part of the law, and they still stand. I really am not trying to get a debate going, I'm not arguing... I am confused! These are just questions from one who is continually seeking the truth. I started by asking what other Christians typically do on a Sunday, and now am asking if we are supposed to be keeping the 10 commandments.

There's no doubt that many OT commandments could still be applicable, but there are many others that would not be applicable, because the temple does not exist and the Levitical priesthood is null and void.

The principles in the commandment to keep the Sabbath have been transferred to the observation of the Lord's Day (Rev 1;10). But worship is the primary objective, then the preaching of the Gospel, then the teaching of the Word, then good works, and then rest. Paul waited seven days to meet with the Christians at Troas. Then they observed "the breaking of bread" (the Lord's Supper), and then Paul preached until midnight. Paul also said that the Sabbath days were "shadows" because the reality is Christ, and the rest that believers have in Him. That is the true Sabbath.

Jesus of Nazareth deliberately chose to heal on Sabbath days to teach the Jews a lesson. These were good works, which were not forbidden on Sabbath days. Indeed the priests baked the show bread on Sabbath days and replaced the previous batch on that day. But they hated Him for it. At the same time He went to the synagogues to join the Jews for worship and the reading of the Word.

The Lord of the Sabbath also established the first day of the week as the day of Christian worship. That is because He rose from the dead on that day, and it was to be commemorated weekly. Justin Martyr (2nd century) describes this in detail.
This is helpful! Thank you! So keeping The Lord's day is still a commandment. So, my original question of What do Christians DO on this day?.. has here been answered as to what the ideal is.

Of course you are confused, you would need a solid understanding of the New Testament. To see through the confusion that surrounds the commandments given to us.

The ten commandments are the law.

There are two commandments that John mentions below.

1 John 3:23-24
This is His commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as He commanded us. The one who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. We know by this that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.

These two commandments above grant life whereas the ten commandments deliver condemnation.

The law will give you a knowledge of your sin. The law will not give you salvation but an awareness of your need for Jesus.
Only Jesus was able to obey the law.

Can you see the problem with proclaiming the law and not the commandments that Jesus gave us?

We go on walks, take naps, read an edifying book, make calls to encourage people, go visit people, we would even help someone if there were a need.

The children sometimes get bored, but it is a much-needed rest for our physical bodies.
THANK YOU!!! This is what I was asking... originally! <3

“Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:”
‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭31:31-32‬ ‭KJV‬‬

a new covenant not according to the old covenant spoken to Israel after being delivered from Egypt
That old covenant that Israel broke was based on obedience to the book of the law.

The new covenant is not based on the book of the law. The new covenant is not centered on the letter of the law.

The law written on our hearts is the fruit of the Holy Spirit. God has poured His love into our hearts.
