Dr. Victor Weirwille of "The WAY International" for $300 (in 1975) would TEACH YOU to speak in tongues, give prophesy, and interpret tongues on cue.
Yes. I was exposed to that. They didn't ask me for money, though. That still happens today.... people being "taught" how to do it. "You have to reach out in faith, just open your mouth and start making sounds, and it will HAPPEN...."
I figure if the Spirit decides I need to speak in tongues, it will happen spontaneously, not because I "prime the pump".

AND, except for some lunatic fringe minor Pentecostal groups, NO MAJOR PENTECOSTAL/CHARISMATIC GROUP ties "Tongues" to Being Born Again.
There are quite a few folks on this forum that do exactly that.

Speaking in tongues is never called "ecstatic utterances" in the Bible.
You should do some more Bible research on this word ecstatic -------and what it means and where it can be used ---your ignorance is showing here

Greek word for ecstatic

Strong's Concordance
ekstasis: a displacement (of the mind), i.e. bewilderment, ecstasy

I say -------which is what happens when you speak in tongues there VARob -----so you obviously don't speak in tongues or you would know that the mind is displaced and the Holy Spirit who dwells in you is speaking the utterance through you -----so the Expanded bible is right in using this descriptive word ------

1 Corinthians 14:14

Amplified Bible
For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unproductive [because it does not understand what my spirit is praying].

Greek word for tongue
glossai
Definition: the tongue, a language
is the gift of men who, rapt in an ecstasy and no longer quite masters of their own reason and consciousness

From Google
Why is speaking in tongues so powerful?

Speaking in tongues stimulates faith and helps us learn how to trust God more fully. For example, faith must be exercised to speak with tongues because the Holy Spirit specifically directs the words we speak. We don't know what the next word will be.

From Got Questions

Glossolalia, a phenomenon sometimes referred to as “ecstatic utterances,” is the uttering of unintelligible, language-like sounds while in a state of ecstasy.

Not even. Modern tongues are NOT biblical tongues.
I agree. All of the "speaking in tongues" I have ever witnessed is babbling (I confess I attended a pentecostal church - maybe cult - once upon a time). I'd be happy to test the so-called tongues with 2 or more interpreters, but it seems those who push the practice aren't keen on testing whether these truly are different tongues or just plain babbling.

You need to show me where ekstasis is used in relation to speaking in tongues.

That's right. YOU say it. The Bible does not.

-----so you obviously don't speak in tongues

or you would know that the mind is displaced
The mind is not "displaced." When a person speaks in tongues, their mind is not involved. The person does not understand what they are saying, their understanding is unfruitful.

Using the word "unproductive" is ok, but not the word "esctatic."

Yes. "Tongue" means language.

Sorry for my French, but this ^^^ is bullcrap.

Generally agree.

Got Questions is wrong. Speaking in tongues is not "language-like" sounds. It is a language. There is nothing in the Bible about a person being in a state of ecstacy when they speak in tongues.

I figure if the Spirit decides I need to speak in tongues,
1 Cor 14:5 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

1 Cor 14:37 If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.

God isn't going to possess you, or make you speak in tongues.

Many do have this idea of speaking in tongues looks like.

Why do most or all mention "speaking" in tongues and not "praying" in the freely given gift of the Divine prayer language we are ALL are encouraged to seek and walk in? The public "speaking in tongues" is separate.:)(y):coffee:

What do you mean by "it will happen spontaneously"?
How do you see it happening?
impromptu would be a better description of how it would happen? However, a thought of my son driving in heavy rains behind a semitruck had prompted me to pray in tongues, because I did not quite understand the vision or know how to pray concerning it one early morning. But it was a relatively quiet prayer. And soon after, a little later that day, I missed a text from him about catching a ride from the auto repair shop....

We know from Scripture "Holy Spirit" does not decide anything, but speaks only what He has been given to speak, (John 16) , just as are we when we obediently practice the Divine prayer language Jesus died to bring us. :)(y):coffee:

I have asked Him to bring prayer needs to mind and He does so, having made our minds to work in terms of pictures, He calls us to do so in this way.:)(y):coffee:

There is no difference. A person can either speak in tongues aloud in the church (in which case he must interpret), or he can speak in tongues quietly to himself and to God. While speaking in tongues to yourself is praying in the spirit, it is never called a "Divine prayer language" except by people...

I doubt that. The Spirit gives utterance, He knows what we need to pray about better than do we.
The Public gift is for the body of believers.
best wishes:)

How does it happen for anyone? I would suggest that if you "forced" it, or just started babbling, then what you are doing is not praying in tongues....
Spontaneously means just what it means. It won't be forced, it will simply happen as I pray, or when I need to pray. We wait for the Spirit to move in us... we don't push the Spirit into doing something.

To use the verse you so love to quote..... if Paul wished that they ALL spoke in tongues, why would they not just all start doing it? Perhaps.... just perhaps, they were relying on the Spirit to move them, if the Spirit chose to do so.

Ever notice the Majority who oppose speaking in Tongues and don't believe God will just speak through a person whenever God sees fit BUT will turn around and believe that God won't force you to Speak in Tongues but instead God will Force You to either be a Believer or Eternally Damned.

A CULT FOLLOWING pushing the idea GOD FORCES US TO BE SAVED OR ETERNALLY LOST, but God won't Speak through people in Tongues hahahahahaha

The Stupid is Real in this place.

Holy Spirit confirms when we get it right, He will shower you palpably with His confirmation.
That is my experience and the experience of those I know who have received and walked out this gifting.
