What Is the Gift of Speaking in Tongues and Is it for Today?
What Is Speaking in Tongues?
Speaking in tongues is a form of communication to God. It is a prayer, and doing so speaks directly to God alone, according to 1 Corinthians 14:2, “For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit.”

Paul further emphasized this in his letter to the Corinthians, “For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful” (1 Corinthians 14:14).
True

What Else Does the Bible Say about Speaking in Tongues
Aside from it being a form of prayer, speaking in tongues is also a form of praising God. It is, thereby, also a form of worship to the Almighty God.
True.

Speaking in Tongues Is a Form of Building the Self
Aside from it being a form of prayer and praise, speaking in tongues is also a form of building oneself. It enables a person to improve oneself morally and spiritually through God, as Paul explains, “The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church” (1 Corinthians 14:4).

It is further emphasized in Jude 20: “But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God.”
Generally true, but I'm not sure about "morally."

Speaking in Tongues Is a Form of Edification to Others
Speaking in tongues is not only building oneself but also building others. It is a way to edify and encourage others to faith.
(1 Corinthians 14:5), he emphasized that the practice of speaking in tongues is a way to build the entirety of the Church.
When interpreted, yes.

Speaking in Tongues Is Done in Private
When is it best to speak in tongues? Paul writes that it is best practiced in private, as he says,

“For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful” (1 Corinthians 14:14).
Speaking in tongues is to be done both privately and in public, but when done publicly, it must be interpreted.

The Gift of Tongues Is from the Holy Spirit and Spoken Only to God
Speaking in tongues is only spoken to God. Like other gifts, speaking in tongues is a gift from the Holy Spirit.
While tongues is spoken to God, it is not a gift. It is one of the nine manifestations of the gift of the Holy SPirit.

Not everyone is bestowed of this gift
That's false. Every Christian has the gift of the Holy Spirit, and can manifest that gift. Paul said by revelation that he wants all Christians to speak in tongues.

Now, because speaking in tongues is a gift from the Spirit, therefore, it is only spoken to God Almighty.
Again, true.

I say ----------------------------Worth Repeating -------Not everyone is bestowed of this gift
Again, false.

Speaking in Tongues Is Not Used to Preach the Gospel
Speaking in tongues is not used to preach the gospel, according to the biblical perspective. All three accounts of the act of speaking in tongues written in the Bible showed signs of supernatural phenomena and were not made when Paul was delivering the gospel.
Acts 2----Acts 10 and Acts 19 ----------
True.

Why Does This Matter?
In conclusion, speaking in tongues is an especially important topic that should be examined in daily Christian living by continually learning about it through God’s Word.

It has a lot of meaning and, to summarize, it is a form of prayer, a form of praise, a form of building the self, and a form of edification to others.
True. And every Christian can, and should, do it.

That does NOT mean that if a person does not speak in tongues he is not saved or does not have the gift of the Holy Spirit.

I've read that some of the tongue speaking is just simply an interpretation mistake thinking unknown tongues meant gibberish. Unknown tongues should be interpreted as unknown languages. Usually, the simple explanation is correct, but it's really above my pay grade.
interpretation is not a translation.

I know you didn't ask me and I use Got Questions myself sometimes, but they believe tongues have ceased. They refer to the perfect, as the Bible, as do so many cessationists.
This was for everyone, sister; thanks for you reply, as I do appreciate it.

1corithinains chapters 12 through 14. the speaking is given by the Holy Spirit as the interpretation is given by the inspiration, which is not a translation on the tongues

I say ----------------------------Worth Repeating -------Not everyone is bestowed of this gift

VARob-said ------ false ---

I say ---------if all Christians get this gift why aren't all speaking in tongues ?????????????------

Every Christian has the gift of the Holy Spirit, and can manifest that gift. Paul said by revelation that he wants all Christians to speak in tongues.

Your Quote here -------Every Christian has the gift of the Holy Spirit, and can manifest that gift.

This quote you make is so FALSE -----No human can manifest speaking in tongues ------this comes straight from the Holy Spirit within ----------

OH and by the way Just because ONE Calls themselves a Christian doesn't mean they have the Indwelling of the Holy Spirit ------this word Christian today is so abused and misused ----Many of People who use this word ----Are NOT TRUE Christians ------

Now
Show the scripture------ that Paul says by revelations he wants all Christians to speak in tongues ----

I know scripture pretty good and no where have I come across this Scripture ------that says by Revelation he wants all Christians to speak in tongues -----so give the scripture that says this -----

Now -----you need to know the difference between having the Indwelling of the Holy Spirit and being Filled with the Holy Spirit -----these are 2 different things

The 9 Gifts listed are manifested by the infilling of the Holy Spirit -----which not every true Christian has the infilling of the Holy Spirit ------they have the indwelling only

The infilling of the Holy Spirit comes from you growing in Maturity in your Faith and trust walk with Christ --- giving yourself completely over to the Holy Spirit so He directs every aspect of your life --

From Got Questions ----
To be filled with the Spirit implies freedom for Him to occupy every part of our lives, guiding and controlling us. Then His power can be exerted through us so that what we do is fruitful to God.

The filling of the Spirit does not apply to outward acts alone; it also applies to the innermost thoughts and motives of our actions. Psalm 19:14 says, "May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer."

So you cannot just manifest tongues ------when you become a Born Again person -----

Paul actually said this

Ephesians 5:18
Amplified Bible
Do not get drunk with wine, for that is wickedness (corruption, stupidity), but be filled with the [Holy] Spirit and constantly guided by Him.

This word filled in Greek means ------

Strong's Concordance
pléroó: to make full, to complete

Cognate: 4137 plēróō (from plērēs, "be full," see 4130 /plḗthō) – properly, fill to individual capacity,

I am not attaching you or tongues, I come from a deep long history of Pentecostalism. A question/statement:

Most folks who support 'tongues' also support laying on of hands healing. Tongues are easy to fake, having folks rise up and walk not so easy. Our mouths can fake, truth , prophecy, our mouths way to often . We are warned Jas_3:8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. This may not relate to you, Why does speaking in tongues mean so much to those who push it ? My Grandmother insisted tongues was part of salvation, yet she was not a loving person. 1Cor 13 ... Why do we not see the tongues 'like unto fire' Acts 2:3 those can not be faked very easy. Why do some of the tongues talkers blow gold dust around the room? A few miles north of my home they blew Holy Angels feather through the air conditioning unit. The fakers are why i stepped away from it years ago. JUst wondering your thoughts
Yes I understand your position as I've read some of your responses. I am neither Pentecostal or Charismatic. You don't have to be either to experience spiritual gifts and that is a major mistake cessationists make.

As far as pushing tongues? I have never done that. The op is about tongues; so are my responses. Whatever an op is about is what I will try to follow, not withstanding all the rabbit holes a thread can go down ;)

Not to offend anyone here, but I will never ever darken the door of a Pentecostal church again. My worst experiences with Christians can all be traced back to Pentecostals and I mean actual damage. As for Charismatics? While there are actually churches referring to themselves as such, at one time, if I remember correctly, it was simply meant for a Christian, non-Pentecostal, who believed the spiritual gifts were still valid and probably spoke in tongues.

I do not see a connection between James and what Paul says about tongues, one is a spiritual gift and the other is the human tongue which can and does set the world on fire. We are responsible for our words. I don't and never have faked anything. You can pray in tongues (silently) in any church or any place as you should be in control. The gift...any gift...should never control a person and there are plenty of videos on youtube where you see the opposite. Such as people jerking uncontrollably or head bobbing or shrieking. IMO, these folks might need some deliverance from demons as that is not the Holy Spirit.

We could have one very long chat over coffee but I really cannot get into everything here. But, the bottom line is that I firmly believe the gifts are real and tongues included. I also believe that much of what goes on in some churches is absolutely fake with everyone saying how wonderful they feel no matter how bizarre the goings on are.

I am thankful I was not raised in a Pentecostal church. I have or had actually, a family member who went sideways when she became involved with Pentecostals and she messed up the lives of everyone around her.

problem related to praying in tongues

Matthew 6:6
But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

Matt 26:36
Then Jesus came with them to a garden called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples: "Sit down here while I go and pray yonder."

Praying like in Pentecostal / Charismatic Churches violates the teaching of Jesus above.
Hmm odd well not your post but.. like the 3rd one today.. Praise GOD Hes talking :)

when Christ walked this earth they were still living by the law. The promise which we can all ask for according to Luke 11:13 didn't happen till Christ left for He said as long as He is here the sweet holy Spirit will not come. Christ breathed on them.. still asked the Father for the promise which they waited for all 120 who ALL were baptized with the holy Spirit. Man I toss out everything and just believe what He said. Just do what He said don't add but or if or maybe... just believe in Him. Its not about ANY group that does believe or not. Its about coming to Him on your own learning to put all faith all trust in HIM.

I didn't address this in my reply so I will here. I don't think we see tongues as described in Acts anywhere else in scripture? Seems to be a one off for the very first time tongues were experienced. Mind you, I have prayed with other believers...some in tongues but quietly...and in English where if you left the room and then came back, you could palatably feel the presence of the Holy Spirit. The atmosphere can change for a Godly experience or an emotional one depending on the approach to God who is Holy.

I will also say that, IMO, some people are just plain nuts including some Christians. For a while I went to a church that did believe in the gifts and some of the people went to the so called Airport meetings in Toronto (Canada) and when they came back they said people were getting gold fillings in their teeth. Later on they apologized and said it was just emotional fanfare. One of those people was an elder. The pastor of that church was a very good pastor and did not go along with things like that. He had a difficult wife though and she did damage to him and the entire church.

So sad.

many Churches with labels have hurt many people, and it is not exclusively Penacostel or Charmatics. Abuse happens in all because the devil is looking to stop the real and effective Body of Christ. BUT Jesus said the gates of hell will not prevail.

In previous discussions about tongues, there were a few (several?) that explicitly stated that if a believer did NOT speak in tongues, they had not received the Spirit. I think they were careful to not specifically SAY that the person wasn't "saved", but implied that IF they were saved, they were some sort of lesser believer, who just didn't understand, or comprehend, or their faith was lacking.
They believed that IF a person was saved, they WOULD speak in tongues, as a sign....
I did remember one such person myself and of course those claims are not biblical. Religious people can be something else to deal with. I say religious because it sure is not 'spiritual'.

Thanks

I agree 100%. However, my life altering experiences (literally) that damaged my faith and life in general were in a Pentecostal church. I was not really acquainted with Pentecostals and had no idea what I was getting into.

It took a long time to correct my path and get to the place where I understood that God is not in the things that happened and people, Christian or not, can behave in a manner that suggests the devil more than God.

But again, I do agree with what you say regarding the fact that Pentecostals and or Charismatics do not have the market cornered on messing people up.

Everything God does the enemy has a counterfeit. I have heard of stories of gold dust, and new Gold Teeth fillings and oil dripping off of the hands during a worship service. I personally have never seen that, nor do I care to. BUT My Pastor was invited to a worship service where this Oil would come on people, He experienced it. This man would not lie however, asa young minister in the 80s, he told me why is it happening? What is the reason? How did it bring glory to God? As a Pentacostel minister and do not seek nor run to every so-called " Revival" a church claims to be having. I have seen what is real. Salvation, the addicted delivered instantly, healings and doctors reports of healing. Marriages restored, Needs met all Glory given to GOD. No Need for a personality.

Same type of thing a million years ago about 1955-56 . Some members pleaded Dad to go to a A.A.Allen meeting . We went, it was a 'service' i will never forget. About 9-10 years of age i saw the deception the evilness of what can come from one calling himself a man of God. I have posted this many times. Dad would not join in the goofball excitement it cost him the church . Fun foot stomping music "church Ladies' with crooked crosses scratched on their foreheads... and the poor bull frog AKA demon in the mason jar. Mom Mon if God put that cross on that lady it would be straight. .....The ladies would kinda put their faces in your face the music would get louder and the offering plate would get passed again. ..... Mom Mom that is no demon Dad snags them in the frog pond. Mom hated frying them frog legs. Good lesson learned

My brother, his wife and myself went to a (turned out to be Pentecostal) church evening service once and it was unearthly. Just something off about the entire thing...women with their beehive hairdos and most everyone fat...I don't mean 20 lbs overweight. When the time came for prayer, we closed our eyes but after the service when we were talking together, both my brother and I had the sensation of things running up and down the walkway between the pews. We didn't think they were angelic. No frogs though. Poor thing.

What you described, could really scar a young child.

No, I didn't say that. We can be fully willing, but if the Spirit doesn't see fit for you to have a manifestation, you will not get it.
The Spirit gives the gifts as he sees fit.... remember the scripture... "distributing to each one individually just as He wills. "

the Spirit knows what the body needs.... the body does not need 150 eyes and no ears, or 12 feet and no arms.... and it does not need an arm trying to be an ear.
Speaking in tongues is speaking in tongues, whether 2000 years ago or today.
The question is who is the source!
If you take f.e. the speaking in tongues by receiving the Holy Spirit in Acts 2 and 10, then this were languages which could be understand (different human languages). While the speaking in tongues which is taught since 1901 is against the expection of the first pentecostals not an human language which could be understood from people.
