I know that it says in the Bible that we are His temple. I understand that you should take care of yourself and eat healthy and such. But does the Bible say anything about doing adventure sports, like parachuting, climbing and snowboarding off-piste and such?
My foster mother, who is not a Christian, asked if it is ok for me to do that now that I am a Christian. I haven't thought about it before. I love those kinds of sports and wouldn't want to stop doing it. It helps me to become calm and be able to concentrate on other things when I need it

Hello ImLova. Well, the Bible does not specify anything about that and I do not think it is a bad thing to practice those types of sports, of course, following the safety regulations as always. I used to skateboard when I was younger.
Taking care of the temple of the Holy Spirit refers to the vices and bad habits that damage our body. So I don't think there is any problem with practicing adventure sports. Anyway, wait to see what else they tell you in the forum and consult with your pastor to see what he recommends. But from my point of view, I don't see anything wrong with it.

Adventure sports means taking unnecessary risks. And it would be "tempting" or testing the Lord in wanting Him you protect you while you choose to do something which could either injure you seriously or even kill you. This is like irresponsible skiers going into the mountains and ignoring the warnings about avoiding certain regions because of the dangers. Then thousands of dollars are spent trying to rescue them or recover their dead bodies.

So here is your biblical example (Matthew 4:5-7): Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

There are all kinds of low-risk sports. Pick some of those instead.

ImLova,

The bible doesn't say anything about sports but be careful you don't listen to peer pressure. If you're not comfortable with a hill being too steep or something like that just don't do it.

I think doing these things is awesome....
I wish I was young enough to still do them.

"For whatever you do, do it as if it's for God himself " meaning to do your best always.

Your abilities to do these things only lasts so long. Enjoy them while you can.

Let me explain something....

God created us to live
Jesus gave us salvation so that we can have a more abundant and fuller life.

So we can cry when sad
Laugh when happy even to the point of crying again.
And so we can love others without the calluses on our hearts.

And absolutely rejoice when God gives us the ability win when competing.

You can waste your time doing what ever you care to. God isn't all that interested in what you have, but He's VERY concerned about what HAS YOU. In the past, I've had to walk away from some things that "Had me" - had become Idols that I was obsessive about.

Where those things might be true....

God guides our paths. He gives us passions that form discipline and perseverance. Helps us gain relationships that can lead others to salvation.

You can't be a Christian in a closet. And in the area the OP lives these things are huge for meeting others her own age. Sure she can go too far with them....but she has said nothing to indicate that she has a problem with that.

Bob-Carabbio,

yes that the truth, God gives us little nudges when he knows we are ready. He will tell you not to watch this or listen to that But God doesn't expect us to be perfect all at once (1 Corinthians 3:2 I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for solid food. In fact, you are still not ready, )

I think God allows us to have hobbies we enjoy (that aren't sinful in themselves of course, lol) so by all means, enjoy those adventure sports. If I was younger and it was available to me I would definitely have jumped on those opportunities!

But everything in moderation - just make sure none of them start becoming first before God (thus making them an idol) and other responsibilities.

Enjoy!

It's not like I go out off-piste where it's closed or if I don't know it's safe. I always think about safety, but of course there are risks, it's dangerous to travel with a car, but we all do it anyway. For me, adventure sports are something that gives me a kick, to try new things, to get an adrenaline rush from going out on a cliff with the snowboard or skydiving. I try to see my limitations so I'm not like some people who take chances and take unnecessarily dangerous risks.

I do not see it like I waste my time. I am in nature sporting, meeting people and can even many times admire how great God is when I'm snowboarding for example. I often listen to worship songs as sporting, so for me I have felt is a way to get closer with God.

Also, why would God not care about what we do? Don't you think God have give us different intents as he created us with different skills and gifts? To me I think God is interest in what we do with our time in life.

And there it is. As a Christians you do not focus on thrills and adrenaline rushes from sports. That is for non-Christians. So you need to rearrange your priorities. And mentioning driving as a risk is not even valid. That is an essential activity, not for kicks and thrills.

But you can either do as you please and tempt the Lord, or change your priorities and do His will. You wanted a biblical perspective and Christ showed you what it is in the passage quoted by me.

Also, why would God not care about what we do?
He does care about what we do, but He does not care for reckless endangerment by Christians. There are plenty of low-risk and no-risk sports.

ImLova,
Don't be discouraged. Cs lewis also was an avid hiker. a brisk walk of his would often be 6+ mile. He used the time to form deep thinking. The main point is not taking unnecessary risks.

Yes hiking is very nice. This summer I was hiking 4 days alone. It was amazing. The first two days I hiked north into the forest and slept in a tent. Then I kayaked back and camped by the river that leads down back to where I live. Some people think I was crazy to do it alone, but it was so nice.
