Is it a gift, or a duty, or both? David said I will set no evil thing before me. We are told to guard our hearts and our eyes, I would imagine the ears should be included as well.

I don't know what you mean by Ecclesiastes. Its one if my favorite books with one of my favorite verses. Fear God and keep His commandments, the whole duty of man.

Another favorite; Worship YWHW in the beauty of holiness.

I like to golf, but mostly I just enjoy working on my homestead. I haven't owned a TV in about 35 years but I still stream the football game when my Steelers are on. I enjoy life, but I might enjoy it better in monastery, something to consider.

The things of this world grow strangely dim
In the light of His glory and grace
Okay, so you are not against all secular recreation, but why disallow music rather than golf or football?

Because I haven't been perfected yet. Just kidding.

Seriously, its simply a personal preference. I'm a song writer and a singer. I hear everything, every word, everything. And I have a difficult time not remembering things. I try to occupy my mind with as much thoughts of God as possible. One of my greatest hindrances are the words and images I have picked up through the years, like evil echo's from the past. I prefer not to add any additional voices to the cacauphony. Besides, I've heard angels sing, once that happens, not much else compares.

Ever wonder why it was so easy for the ancients to hear God? I don't.

Well, it's a good thing you have not seen the angels play golf or football! I think secular music that does not advocate sin is acceptable as recreation.

BTW, I meant the secular Song of Songs instead of Ecclesiastes. Oops! Many secular love songs are in the same vein as S of S.

While I admire your attempts to be more holy for God, I'd also like to point out it can become easy for any person to become corrupted by our own egos, and try to deserve or earn God's grace. He originally gave humanity just ten rules, that's it...but in a reasonably short time, their obsession and fear exploded to the point they came up with 603 more! Pardon the phrase, but how in the hell is anyone on Earth supposed to live like that?! Its completely impossible...and God knew it from the start. He didn't give the Commandments only as a super-strict boundary, but also to prove a very important point: we can't get to Him by our own efforts. Trusting Him, though its rarely easy, is the only way. But that's a matter of the heart, not the hands.

Yes, of nonmeritorious receiving God’s grace by faith, not of earning it by virtue of our own efforts.

Fortunately,

His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence.

And

He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

Avoid it like the plague that it is. And most so called christian music too.
Oh goody. Another one.

There's nothing wrong with twinkle twinkle little star.

Are you going to try to claim a Vivaldi concerto is evil?

What about Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah? Is that from the devil too?

Funny guy. The majority of secular music is evil. And why would I wish upon a star, when I can pray to the Living God? You see how subtle he is? Fools mock at sin.

I guess the majority of secular pop music is vetted or fairly G-rated and therefore not evil. But a lot of the hard rock genres are not pop.

Wishing upon a star is a different song. You're getting your tunes mixed up.

Don't worry about that though. I stepped on a cricket this morning. Jiminy won't be leading any kids astray in my neighborhood, not on my watch!

Fools also gripe about things they don't understand. Especially older fools. Everything they don't understand is automatically junk that should be avoided at all costs.

You are correct, wrong song, but you got the point.

But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.

Lord Forgive me for every time I have violated this principle.

On a similar note, here's a thread I made on the importance of being honest, regarding how each of us stands regarding the Ten Commandments. I used my own life as an example; I hope you are well informed by it.

Then you probably want to avoid the Bible discussion forum. They are always finding new, creative ways to call each other fools.

And you definitely want to avoid proverbs. Lots of calling fools out there.

But back to the matter at hand:

There are lots of good secular songs, with good messages. If you don't know of any, you really should listen to some music now and then.

I mean, you don't HAVE to listen to music. But if you choose not to listen to music, you really should stop spouting off about it. Deriding something of which you know nothing just makes you look... Well... Foolish. Sorry but it does.

I'm a musician.
I love music. But I'm not going to listen to Satan's messengers all day in hopes of hearing that one uplifting vibe.
But hey, you do you man.

How can you be a musician, yet know of zero secular songs that are good? Or at least secular songs that are not evil. If you are a musician you should know more than I about secular music that has nothing of the devil in it.

I'm just an avid music fan and I can list hundreds. Shoot, thousands!

If you are a musician, but you know nothing of this, Your music must be very... Ah... One-note. :p

Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made.

But you should know that, you're an Erudite.

And lo did he make many posts in a forum, to dissuade people from good music, lest their hearts be gladdened. For he couldst not bear the thought of people enjoying anything.
