GENESIS CHAPTER 39 NOTES

v 1 “…bought him of the hands of the Ishmeelites…” - Is Midianite (Gen 37:36) the same with Ishmeelites. Or something like the Hittites are under the umbrella of the Canaanites - Hittites are Canaanites. I’m thinking it’s likely the latter

v2 “…The Lord was with Joseph...”

v4 Joseph had his master’s grace

v5 Joseph’s master was blessed by God for Joseph’s sake

v6 “…Joseph was a goodly person, and well favoured.” - men of God live righteously and God protects them

v9 Joseph rejects his master’s wife's advances towards him and explains why. “…this great wickedness, a sin against God…”

v10 The master’s wife keeps tempting Joseph and he keeps resisting

v12 The master's wife is persistent!!

v14-15 The master’s wife lies on Joseph

v20 Joseph’s master puts him in prison because his wife lied to him

v21 The Lord was with Joseph in prison
Most of this part of the Bible describes history rather than prescribes morality.
After Abraham, Isaac had two sons, Esau and Jacob. Jacob, whose name was changed to Israel (in GN 32:28 & 35:10), had twelve “sons”, whose families moved to Egypt because of drought and famine in Canaan, where they became slaves of the pharaohs (GN 47:21) until Moses led the Exodus. When Moses was called by God, he asked God to reveal His name, and God’s answer is the next key OT teaching I think we will encounter.

GENESIS CHAPTER 42 NOTES

v1 The Bible is no longer referring to Jacob as Israel. Once Abram’s name was changed to Abraham, the Bible never called him Abram again while he was living from what I recall

v2 Jacob (Israel) tells his sons to go get corn in Egypt for them to live and not die

v3 Ten brothers went to Egypt to buy corn

v4 Jacob (Israel) did not want Benjamin to go with them

v5 The Bible is now referring to Jacob as Israel “the sons of Israel”

v6 Joseph’s brothers bow down before him with their faces to the earth

v7 “And Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself strange unto them, and spake roughly unto them; and he said unto them, Whence come ye? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food.” - Joseph was upset with his brothers

v8 The brothers did not recognize Joseph

v9-16 Joseph accuses his brothers of being spies. To prove they were not spies, the brothers must go get Benjamin to prove their innocence. One brother must wait in prison until they return.

v21 The brothers are saying this is likely “karma” for what they did to Joseph

v22 “And Reuben answered them, saying, Spake I not unto you, saying, Do not sing against the child; and ye would not hear? therefore, behold also his blood is required." - Reuben reminds them he warned them not to do what they did to Joseph

v23 Joseph was using an interpreter to speak to his brothers. In addition to Joseph now being an older man, him speaking the Egyptian language makes more sense why they didn’t recognize Joseph.

v24 “And he turned himself about from them, and wept; and returned to them again, and communed with them, and took from them Simeon, and bound him before their eyes.” - What his brothers did caused a deep wound for Joseph, as it would be for any other person. I wonder why he chose Simeon to be bound.

v25 “Then Joseph commanded to fill their sacks with corn, and to restore every man’s money into his sack, and to give them provisions for the way: and thus did he unto them.” - Joseph is showing love and forgiveness despite everything that happened.

v28 The brothers did not know Joseph gave them back their money

v29 Referring to Jacob as Jacob instead of Isreal

v35 The brothers and Jacob were afraid; they saw that all their money for the food they received from the Egypt was not with the Egyptians

v38 Jacob says Benjamin should not go with his brothers because he already lost Joseph; it would bring him sorrow to the grave if he lost Benjamin.

Most of this part of the Bible describes history rather than prescribes morality.

I have another impression. I'm learning what God approves of and disapproves of, which does guide morals. I didn't read the entire message because it goes ahead of where I am in the Bible right now. Trying to stay spoil free😅 Thank you for your input! Others who have read the entire Bible will appreciate your thoughts on the scriptures ahead😀

GENESIS CHAPTER 42 NOTES

This is what I had originally in my notes...
v9-16 Joseph accuses his brothers of being spies. To prove they were not spies, one brother must go get Benjamin to prove their innocence. The other brothers must wait in prison until he returns with Benjamin - It appears Joseph's heart softened with changing the conditions. He gave them food and returned their money. He also wept before making the decision to only keep Simeon.

When I posted I remembered that only one brother, Simeon, stayed and changed my notes to what it says below
v9-16 Joseph accuses his brothers of being spies. To prove they were not spies, the brothers must go get Benjamin to prove their innocence. One brother must wait in prison until they return.

I went back to read over chapter 42 when reading chapter 43 and saw that original note was correct

GENESIS CHAPTER 43 NOTES

v2 When they finished the food from Egypt, Jacob (Israel), tells the brothers to go buy food again from Egypt - Jacob (Israel) meant it when he said that he did not want to send Benjamin

v3 “And Judah spake unto him, saying, The man did solemnly protest unto us, saying, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.” - Judah is back with the brothers and his family. Wonder when and why he came back. The brothers needed Benjamin to be with them in order to get more food

v6 The Bible refers to Jacob as Isreal. Israel is upset with them that they told Joseph they had another brother because he doesn’t want to send Benjamin. Israel loves his son dearly

v9 Judah promises Israel the protection of Benjamin

v11-12 Israel agrees and tells them to take presents to Egypt. Also, to take double the money in case the money they received back was an oversight - this shows integrity

v16 “And when Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the ruler of his house, Bring these men home, and slay, and make ready; for these men shall dine with me at noon.” - “and slay” means to kill an animal. When I first read it I thought it meant kill them, I was like that can’t be right😅

v23 “And he said, Peace be to you, fear not: your God, and the God of your father, hath given you treasure in your sacks: I had your money. And he brought Simeon out unto them.” - God is given the praise not Joseph, always put God first in all things good
I just realized the Bible is using Joseph for us to know it is Joseph that is being spoken of. I wonder if Joseph was presented to the brothers as the name Pharaoh gave him, Zaphnathpaaneah

v26 Brothers presented the present to Joseph and bow to Joseph

v28 Brothers bow again

v30 “And Joseph made haste; for his bowels did yearn upon his brother: and he sought where to weep; and he entered into his chamber, and wept there.” -wow you really see how the act of his brother affected him. They are very fortunate God is with Joseph.

v32 “And they set on for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians, which did eat with him, by themselves: because the Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an abomination unto the Egyptians.” - Interesting, it appears many cultural practices did not approve of intermingling between cultures

v34 Messes refers to portions or servings of food

GENESIS CHAPTER 44 NOTES

v1 Joseph returns his brothers' money again

v2 Joseph’s silver cup is put in Benjamin’s sack

v3 The brothers start heading out of Egypt

v4-17 Joseph planted the silver cup in Benjamin’s sack to have him as a servant

v18-34 Judah pleads with Joseph to take him as a servant and release Bemjamin explaining why his father could die if Benjamin does not return to him.

GENESIS CHAPTER 45 NOTES

v1-2 "Then Joseph could not refrain himself before all them that stood by him; and he cried, Caue every man to go out from me. And there stood no man with him, while Joseph made himself know unto his brethren. And he wept aloud: and the Egyptians and the house of Pharaoh heard." - Joseph is going through it! Hearing of his father moved him to tears. He loves his father and younger brother dearly. I believe he has forgiven his brothers because of God. Reading this story is a great reminder when there is any strain in different kinds of relationships - feelings of betrayals, mistreatment etc. - always stay humble and seek God. Treat your enemies with kindness - much easier said than done - but with God we can😀We see a similar scenario with Hagar’s story, but we see descriptively how painful it was for Joseph.

v3 It’s likely the brothers didn’t know his name as Joseph before now

v4 Joseph tells his brothers he is their brother Joseph who they sold into Egypt. Intense moment!

v5 “Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life.” - Very humble moment

v8 “So now it was not you that sent me hither, but God: and he hath made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and a ruler through all the land of Egypt.” - Joseph knew it was God’s plans but still experienced pain from what he experienced. Specifically, when he was “reminded” of that experience; like PTSD. When not thinking of the events that occurred, Joseph has been doing exceedingly well through God😀

v9-11 Joseph tells his brothers to bring their family to Egypt to live near Joseph since there will be five more years of famine

v14-15 “And he fell upon his brother Benjamin’s neck, and wept; and Benjamin wept upon his neck. Moreover he kissed all his brethren and wept upon them: and after that his brethren talked with him.” - I can’t take this!😅 The genuine love (and forgiveness) between brothers and family is so great😀

v16 Pharaoh was pleased to hear about Joseph’s brothers

v22 “To all of them he gave each man changes of raiment; but to Benjamin he gave three hundred pieces of silver, and five changes of raiment.” - Joseph loves his little brother greatly😀

v25-27 The Bible referring to Jacob (Israel) as Jacob

v28 The Bible refers to Jacob as Israel. Israel is happy to hear that Joseph is alive and will travel to Egypt to see him before he dies

Chapter 41
A lot to unpack in this chapter.
The Pharaoh has dreams and the forgetful chief butler finally remembers Joseph.
Joseph got cleaned and shaved and put fresh clothes on...you can't be stanky around the Pharaoh!
Joseph tells Pharaoh, "It's not me, but God who will give you an answer." Always put God first and acknowledge that it is Him who gives you wisdom and ability to do the things you are able to do.

Joseph goes from being in a dungeon prison to being second only to Pharaoh. He was given a wife, with whom he has 2 sons (Manasseh and Ephraim).
He spends 7 years gathering food, so much so that it was without number.
After, there was famine. The famine became so severe on the Earth, that all countries came to Joseph for food.

---

Chapter 42
Jacob's sons travel to Egypt for food (except Benjamin). They run into Joseph, but they don't recognize him. He recognizes them though. He speaks roughly to them and calls them spies. He tells them they must bring back their youngest brother. Simeon is bound and left behind while the other brothers head back to their father. Joseph commands that their sacks be filled with corn and their money and provisions.
When they get back to their father, he's not happy with the situation and won't let them return to Egypt with Benjamin.

---

Chapter 43
Jacob finally allows them to return to Egypt with Benjamin. You change your mind about things when you're hungry.
He sends his sons with gifts and double money. They arrive in Egypt and are brought into Joseph's house to dine. He treats them kindly this time. Their feet are washed. Feet are important in the Bible. I like my feet. They get me places.
Joseph set the brothers in order of their age and gave Benjamin 5 times as much.
Occasionally, Joseph has to go hide and have a good cry. I feel ya' Joseph.

---

Chapter 44
Joseph continues to play with his brothers. It seems fair after their shananigans when he was a youth. He has their bags filled food and their money, plus he has his silver cup put into Benjamin's bag.
They left. Later the bags were searched, the cup is found in Benjamin's bag, they have to return to the city. Judah approaches Joseph, asking that he take him instead of Benjamin. If Benjamin doesn't return back to Jacob, it will be the death of Jacob.

---

Chapter 45
Joseph can't stand it anymore and reveals himself to his brothers. They are speechless.
He says, "Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life." Joseph was a wise and true man of God. What they meant for evil, God meant for good. "All things work together for good to them that love God."
Wagons and all kinds of things are sent back to Canaan to fetch Jacob. The Pharaoh gives them the good land of Egypt. When they get to Jacob and tell him the news, he is astonished. But, soon he revives and decides to go to Egypt.

---

Chapter 46
Israel offers sacrifices to God in Beersheba. God speaks to him and tells him to fear not going into Egypt.
Israel arrives in Egypt and they came into the land of Goshen. Joseph and Israel are reunited and weep.

---

Chapter 47
Five of the brothers meet the Pharaoh. Jacob meets the Pharaoh. Jacob was 130 years old at the time. Jacob blesses Pharaoh. Pharaoh commands they be given the best in the land of Egypt.

Joseph rounds up all the money in the land of Egypt for bread.
When money failed, Joseph took all their livestock.
When they were out of livestock, he took their land (except for the land belonging to the priests).

---

Chapter 48
Israel blesses Joseph's sons. He says that they are as his own sons. He also puts his right hand on the younger son's head, saying that he will be a greater nation.

---

Chapter 49
Jacob gathers his sons to him. Here we see why it was a big mess up for Reuben to have slept with Bilhah. He loses his place as firstborn.
Jacob speaks longer about Judah here. Judah is the lineage of Christ.
And continued with each and he blessed them; every one according to his blessing he blessed them.
At the end of this chapter Jacob dies at 147.

---

Chapter 50
Jacob is embalmed and they mourn for him 40 days. With Pharaoh's permission, Joseph went up from Egypt with a great company to bury his father. He buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah with Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebecca, and Leah.
After they returned to Egypt, Joseph's brothers were afraid of what Joseph might do to them. But, Joseph said, "Fear not: for am I in the place of God? God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive." Powerful.
Before Joseph died, he told his brethern that God will bring them out of the land (which he does in the next book) and he told them to carry his bones with them out of the land (which happens in the Exodus). Then Joseph dies at 110 years old.

GENESIS CHAPTER 46 NOTES

v2 The Bible calls Jacob Israel, God calls on him as Jacob

v3 God promises he will make Jacob (Israel) a great nation in Egypt

v7 The entire family of Israel go to Egypt

v10 Simeon had a son with a Canaanite woman, Shaul is the son

v8-15 The children (souls) from Leah were 33

v18 The children (souls) from Zilpah were 16

v22 The children (souls) from Rachel were 14

v25 The children (souls) of Bilhah were 7

v26-27 “All the souls that came with Jacob into Egypt, which came out of his loins, besides Jacob’s sons’ wives, all the souls were threescore and six; And the sons of Joseph, when were born him in Egypt, were two souls: all the souls of the house of Jacob, which came into Egypt, were threescore and ten.” - How did it go from threescore and six to threescore and ten. I’ll have to study the lineage later when I have more time😀

v29 “And Joseph made ready his chariot, and went up to meet Israel his father, to Goshen, and presented himself unto him; and he fell on his neck; and wept on his neck a good while.” -Love for his father🙂

v34 “That ye shall say, Thy servants’ trade hath been about cattle from our youth even until now, both we, and also our fathers: that ye may dwell in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is an abomination unto the Egyptians.” - Wonder why shepherds were an abomination to the Egyptians. How did they raise their cattle/kine?

GENESIS CHAPTER 47 NOTES

v6 “The land of Egypt is before thee; in the best of the land make thy father and brethren to dwell; in the land of Goshen let them dwell: and if thou knowest any men of activity among them, then make them rulers over my cattle.” - Pharaoh still has all his trust in Joseph

v7 The Bible is referring to Jacob (Israel) as Jacob

v9 Jacob is 130 years when meeting Pharaoh after entering Egypt

v15-17 Why didn’t they eat their cattle? Or farm their livestock for more food? v17 “And they brought their cattle unto Joseph: and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for horses, and for the flocks and for the cattle of the herds, and for the asses; and he fed them with bread for all their cattle for that year.”

v19-20 Wow, selling land for bread, seems wild. I know you have to eat; I would have asked for the meat back since it wasn’t a fair exchange😅 It may have been, I just don’t see it right now😅

v23 Joseph gave them seeds to sow the land

v24 A fifth of what the people grew belonged to Pharaoh

v25 I guess it was fair because they are very thankful😅 I need to learn more about agriculture and livestock farming

v26 “And Joseph made it a law over the land of Egypt unto this day, that Pharaoh should have the fifth part, except the land of the priests only, which became not Pharaoh’s.” - “unto this day,” I wonder what day they are referring to because that is mentioned quite a bit thus far

v28 The Bible refers to Jacob (Israel) as Jacob. Jacob lived in Egypt 17 years and passed away at 147 years old

v29 The Bible refers to Jacob as Israel

v30-31 Israel asks to be buried with his fathers. Joseph promised to bury Israel with his fathers.

GENESIS CHAPTER 48 NOTES

v2 Mentioned as Jacob and Israel in the same verse

v3 Jacob tells Joseph that God appeared unto him at Luz in the Land of Canaan

v4 Jacob blesses Joseph. Not clear what land he’s referring to, is it the Luz in the Land of Canaan?

v10 Isreal could not see in his old age like his father Isaac

v16 Israel blesses Joseph’s sons

v17-18 Culture is for the firstborn to receive blessings

v19 Isreal says the younger son, Ephraim, will be greater than his older brother Manasseh

v22 “Moreover I have given to thee one portion above thy brethren, which I took out of the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow.” - Israel’s love for Joseph is very apparent until he dies

GENESIS CHAPTER 49 NOTES

I'm likely really off with a lot of what Jacob (Israel) had to say to his sons. I'm sure it will make more sense on the second read through the Bible😅 No spoilers please🙏🙂

v3 Jacob and Israel mentioned in the same verse

v3 Reuben is first born of Israel

v4 Oh no! Tough to hear your father say you won’t excel. Reuben punished for adultery

v7 Simeon and Levi punished for killing in the case of Dinah

v8 “Judah, thou are he whom thy brethren shall praise: thy hand shall be in the neck of thine enemies; thy father’s children shall bow down before thee.” - was not expecting this for Judah!

v9 Compares Judah to a lion

v10 Judah is to keep hold of the law until Shiloh come

v11 Not sure why garments would be washed in wine

v13 Zebulun will be a master of the sea?

v14 Issachar is patient; became a servant unto tribute

v17 Dan seems dangerous. He’s compared to a snake.

v19 Gad will overcome what is to come

v21 Naphtali gives goodly advice

v22 “Joseph is a fruitful bough, even a fruitful bough by a well; whose branches run over the wall:” - great blessing!

v24 “But his bow abode in strength, and the arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the might God of Jacob; (from thence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel:)- the comment in ( ) seems significant

v26 “The blessings of thy father have prevailed above the blessings of my progenitors unto the utmost bound of the everlasting hills: they shall be on the head of Joseph, and on the crown of the head of him that was separate from his brethren.” - Joseph is really blessed!🙂

v27 Benjamin will not be someone to mess with😅

v30 Jacob was born in the cave in the field of Machpelah in the land of Canaan

v31 This is where Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebekah, and Leah are buried

GENESIS CHAPTER 50 NOTES

Wow the last chapter, that went fast! 💨😀

v1 “And Joseph fell on his father’s face, and wept upon him, and kissed him.” - Joseph has much love for his father. They both did for one another

v2 Mentions embalming. Israel was embalmed by physicians

v3 Not sure what it means by “forty days were fulfilled for him”

v5 Joseph had to ask Pharaoh’s permission to leave to bury his father

v15 Interesting what Joseph’s brothers thought he would do something ill towards them now that their father has passed.

v17 “So shall ye say unto Joseph, Forgive, I pray thee now, that trespass of the servants of God of thy father. And Joseph wept when they spake unto him.” - Joseph is really sensitive about the situation, very understandable

v19 “And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the place of God? - Joseph is always giving God praise and credit!😀

v20 Just thought of Jesus Christ being sacrificed to save many; similar to Joseph being sacrificed to save many in Egypt and surrounding countries😀

v22 Joseph lived to 110 years

v23 Joseph saw his grandchildren

v24 “And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die: and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.” -Just noticed that God hasn’t appeared to Joseph. God appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Israel). Wonder why Jacob’s name was not a permanent name change in the Bible like Abraham

v25 Joseph was embalmed and put in a coffin in Egypt. Interesting, he didn’t request to be buried with his father since they had a strong bond

Thanks, and you do the same, we all make mistakes and being willing to learn new daily, has helped me in humility greatly. At first under Law, when under law, that pride stepped in and I went back to Daddy again in prayer and asked is this what you want for me to be proud. I heard nor guilty either anymore, my Son did it all for you to rest in, and be new in love and mercy too, the same as my Son did for you and all others too.
I said but!!!!!!!!!!!! to God what if I take this for granted, I know I have, you know I have. And Father said and you are learning not to do that anymore correct? I replied yes, then continue in belief to me and see new daily to understand. I am forever with you never against you, I will teach you, so continue to believe me Romans 14:1-4
A gigantic Thank you, Thank you
