How long have you been using it?
Long enough to give him a headache, but he has triumphed in installing libre office on it.

I commented that it is kind of like a dark souls video game for him. The objective is not to get a usable computer system, but to surmount impossible odds and eventually achieve victory over an intractable foe.

Its like living in briar patch. Somehow it feels safer than the beaten path.

Some people call it a hipster linux. I don't know about all that. I can't remember when I first installed it. It was 3 to 8 years ago.

Hipster Linux?

Hipster version of something is when you use it specifically because nobody else is using it and you want to be unique.

"Hey check out that beat! I think I want to add this song to my playlist."

"You should check Shazam and see if it recognizes the song."

...

"Did it know the song?"

"Yeah..."

"Aw man! What a shame."

The way you say you are using it is more like conspiracy Linux. If even I have a hard time getting anything to run, no way the feds will be able to use this computer to spy on me.

Have an issue which is really bugging me, hope some bright spark can help.

My newest rig is a custom build which the prospective owner cancelled just after it was built, so i bought it at a bargain basement price.
Problem is, it proclaims itself as "..... product: P......... AMD Ryzen 5 RX 7600 Gaming PC in Mint's system monitor, wondering if that's why EFF's browser info check says i have a totally unique footprint currently. My security is still great apparently but a unique fingerprint problem is a real pain, posting a link to EFF'S browser check, they are excellent and have been around since the early days:

https://www.eff.org/pages/cover-your-tracks

Anyway, have checked everywhere to delete the custom builder's legend, including bios but can't find the darn thing. If anyone has any ideas they'd be welcome for sure.

A custom built rig will likely be rather unique when you go online. You may have to change out hardware to a more standardized combination.

If you have parts that are commonly found in a Dell, combined with parts that are usually used by Lenovo, on a motherboard that comes from HP, with a video card that you don't usually see on a stock computer... Yeah, that will show up like a neon sign. Or more to the point, like a bright orange Bugatti on the freeway.

You star! Thought you'd have some useful advice, so glad you replied. No Dell type stuff, bought two Gigabyte rx 7600 xt gpus, as they were well cheap and compatible with both my main rigs, was wondering if perhaps installing the xt in the b650 rig, might cure the issue.

From what you've said that might be what's needed, taken a risk buying two of these, installed the rx 6750 xt in the b550 rig and it's deaded already, hope these won't have a short life.

When i said i do a lot of video encoding, i meant it. VE is more deadly than heavy gaming.

Well that will definitely give you a unique footprint.

It's like driving a custom car versus driving a gray Toyota Corolla or a Prius. You stand out a lot more in the custom rig.

If you want to be more anonymous online, get a standard off-the-shelf computer.

On the other hand, are you doing anything that you have to worry about somebody hacking you for? Are you doing any online banking or anything involving your social security number?

The ultimate security is not having any reason to care. I never run an antivirus because I'm never doing anything that anybody would want to steal the information for.

Thing is Lynx, this is the first time i've had a unique fingerprint. Usually, it's pretty standout as yep, the components, using Linux and my settings etc, are definitely not usual.

installed an rx 7600 xt in the b550 rig yesterday, do you think installing the other xt in the b650 might work?

You probably want to wait for Eli to get here and answer that one. I know basics and generalities. He would know more specific answers like that.

But if I had to guess, I would say it's not the ram. It's the whole hardware combination that is triggering it.

That's just a guess though.

Think you're onto something friend, just realised, it's the first time EFF have said my fingerprint is absolutely unique but the only new thing i've installed is another nvme drive.

Think that's unlikely to be the issue but Mint 22 has updated a LOT lately, wonder if that's what's pushed me over into iffy territory. Recommend trying their test if you don't know them already, you can choose just the site one, or a tracking company's offering.

Thanks but I'm good. I don't worry about anybody pinpointing me online because I don't have anything anybody would want.

I don't so much as put a PIN number on my phone. If I had a girlfriend, if she wanted to check my messages, what would I care? If anybody hacked me, they couldn't get anything useful.

That is one healthy attitude Lynx, i use probably the best vpn, tool up in settings etc but know what? I actually doubt they make any difference at all, do so just in case they do.

I'm a loud and proud conspiracy theorist, because so many conspiracies exist. Personally doubt anything we're allowed is actually meant to do us any good. :p Noticed many more people are realising summat stinks, personally experienced similar to this meme regularly now: You were right, bro.jpeg

That last post was intended in a humorous tone. When you boldly announce that you are a conspiracy theorist, people start wanting to excuse themselves and be somewhere else now.
