As a Christian I do not need evidence that tongues were a gift of the Holy Spirit. There is much spoken about it in the New Testament.

We are not required to accept or have "faith" in the claims of tongues today.

If the tongues and other physical supernatural manifestations of the Holy Spirit were currently active the need for our faith in them is rather absurd.

This is not about "fake tongues" but any claims of supernatural manifestations. Those who insist that they are going on around us should simply point it out and not insist that we have to believe first. This is just a cop-out.

Claiming that we need to accept tongues as real before we can see tongues as real is childish, unbiblical and dumb. People in the Bible knew the validity of the manifestations before they "accepted" the manifestations as real.

James 1:5 with the caveat to ask in faith:
But let him ask in faith, doubting nothing, for the one doubting is like a wave of the sea, being blown and being tossed by the wind.

and there are prayers written by Paul that you can pray in the first person (in other words for yourself). For example. Ephesians 1
v. 18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people

you could do a search on the prayers of Paul for believers and begin to get an idea of how much God want us to know and understand Him and the love He has for us. You are not in danger believing what scripture says, but pray for discernment also.



Well I don't know who you are meaning above, but unless they understood the language or could interpret, I am not sure how that would work. Remember that those who first received the gift of tongues were taken to be drunk. Remember that Paul gave easy to
understand instructions on how gifts should be used. Decently and in order hardly seems to fit the way so much is done these days.

So I just looked up the meaning of yada and it does not mean my God it means to know or percieve and even secually apparently

So am I to understand then that you do not think tongues is for today then? and you don't believe it even operates today?

By no means.

If God wants any physical supernatural manifestation of the Holy Spirit to be active to who are we say no.

I don't believe that they are happening today for the same reason that you don't believe that manna is falling in your backyard.

You said, "The Bible is plain in its instructions", so I just observed that if its instructions were plainer regarding speaking in tongues there would be no discussion on this thread. In this case I find 1Cor.14:18-19 to be unplain.

Yeah not too helpful. We also do not find people teaching people to receive the gift of tongues by telling them to mouth certain syllables and what have you. People just seem to make up their own stuff as they go along.

Not to bore anyone, but there are instructions written by Paul that should be followed. No gift should be the emphasis in any meeting.

The same thing could be said for many threads in this forum.

1Cor.14:18-19: I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. But in the church, I would rather speak five coherent words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.

Paul is referring to the us of tongues in private: prayer, worship, edification. Those familiar with the gift understand that. BUT comprehension is the better part of what is said in church so if someone were to just go on in tongues with no interpretation, then what good is that? Actually, Paul makes that very plain in his instructions.

2 For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit. I Cor 14
Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves I Cor 14: 4a

It's all well explained in chapt 14 so...

you clearly misunderstand me, we are to test the spirits and without discernment I could not know the real from the fake. I merely was telling you if you don't believe in the gift in general God is not likely to show it to you.

With some exceptions as Gods knows who is sincerely wrong and who is just opining on their own belief and gets angry when everyone does not agree with them.

There is the example of Paul who was honest in his persecution of believers and Jesus appearing to Him and instantly Paul believed.

Sometimes God does just kind of tap a person on the shoulder

True enough this is sometimes the case however I don't think this is the case for Lamar but maybe not perhaps God will allow him to experience the real thing some day. I know that when I experienced it there was no words to describe it the power of God coursing into me the way I was absolutely in awe of God the feeling of thise fire surging through me like electricity it is hard to explain but I would love for all believers to know God in this way it reveals the depth of him so much that you don't have the words
