That's a higher risk position than the street LEOs around here from what I know.

I never did, but I've had a lot of friends and coworkers who worked in prisons. One was a high security prison in the Chicago area. Students at a Bible college worked there while going to school. Others were martial arts teachers who worked part time in my school.
A brother from another father worked at a jail. His life was threatened by an inmate over 6'5" and a mesomorph muscle guy with a history of much violent crime. He was told he was going to get written up. The prisoner nearly killed him.

I taught knife defense and found that to be an arbitrary "Rule."
It's been published, but when you are charged by anyone with or without weapons, death can quickly result.
What I learned is that:
A. Knives are usually concealed until contact distances. Threats are rarely across a street or long distance telegraphing nefarious intentions. I can give half a dozen attacks attempted against me in regards to personal examples, not that we are debating or anything.
It's just been an interesting life. God gave me life and has kept this body alive in spite of being the object of all the many attacks. Because of those, I feel compelled to pass forward potentially helpful knowledge and blessings to the good guys.
B. If a man tackles you the result is head upon hard surface, ie concrete, at momentum. That can easily result in death without a blade. The blade would be an additionally force multiplier. The impact would likely, stun or render unconscious the victim if he survived the impact. A shot to center mass would possibly avert the running attacker, but not necessarily. Many attackers absorb many shots without immediate effect. They can still inflict harm since there's no such thing as a magic bullet.
Historical Example: Filipino Moros during the US War against the Philippines around the turn of the 20th century. John Moses Browning invented the model 1911 in 45 caliber to bring greater stopping power against the fierce blade wielding Filipinos. They were known to charge the front line fox holes and kill a lot of Americans before finally going down.

The woman tried to aid an innocent man who was kicked by mob after mob taking turns over around a 20 minute time. Others were also attacked. Only one guy called the police upon escaping. When they eventually showed up, they refused to take the brutalized woman's statement or get her an ambulance.

If enough people were trained against violent crimes, there would be far less criminals attempting random violence like they have commonly in the big cities. My heart goes out to the lady on the subway though. Other than chosing a seat far from the criminal, there's nothing she could do here. There's no way to know beforehand and not much for the criminal to fear when they get away with stabbing their own mother and are released.

The judge demanded that I drop the charges. The Morgantown police stole my money from me that he admitted to stealing. They refused to return it after they were told by that thief and me the victim as it was stuffed into the pocket of officer integrity. Then the armed thief broke into an old man's house demanded money and stabbed him in the chest repeatedly. I hate to bring it up, but someone in this forum should learn from my experience. There seems to be little interest in numbers, but it could save a life.

There's unaccountability of racism motivated violence.
The last time I rode a bus, the black bus driver gave me an angry look for no reason. As soon as I paid his fair he slammed on the gas and sent me flying into a chair.
I've cancelled YouTube subscriptions to channels with the racist blacks who cover a topic I'm interested in because they keep talking about civil war and think every white person is out to get them.
I worked with all kinds of dark complected people and rarely had this type of unwarranted anger before. Did you see this at work?

I don't know his motive, but can take an educated guess. It's often hard to determine motive of a spontaneous random act of violence. In this case I'm going to guess that he's acting out of hatred for the symbol (pretty white "privilege") of his prejudice against lighter skinned people. He's a coward who attacked a lone woman oblivious of anything . He's not probably thinking about 3 hots and a cot.
There's been no common thread in the many public transit murders other than:
1. The victims are ambushed, so they are cowardly ambush predators.
Expls: Pushed victims from behind into oncoming subway trains.
Sucker punches from behind euphemistically called "The knock out game." That happened to one of my students waiting in line.
Stabbings in the back, head, neck, etc.
2. The victims, if not ambushed, are vastly outnumbered.
3. The vast number of violent and sexual assault crimes per capita are committed by black men.
This sounds like a racist thing because it is racist. The racists are the criminals .
I've spoken to those who have moved to my area to escape New York prosecution and/ or crimes.
I have been told that ALL their community back home are very racist. I have a hard time believing that, but it's a theme.
On the contrary, I can only think of one person I've met in my area who was European decent who was racist against blacks. However, my middle class black neighbors, and friends would not associate with the younger urban blacks because they were the ones most prejudiced against that gangsta hip-hop drug culture where there were few intact marriages. Most of the criminals don't know who their Dad's are and we're not taught personal accountability or Christian values at home.
I've been sucker punched by black racists as a kid at basketball camp. I hit em back and stopped him from wanting to try it again. They were posturing, talking tough, threats from guys much older and bigger. But they like to attack those who they are sure they can win against with the mindless chip on the shoulder attitude.
4. Car was in the shop and called a cab. The shock jock talking about sexual violence against white women was blasted. This was a man convicted of gang raping an old woman in Fairmont. He was in a front page article in the paper. He was a best friend of my half bother for years. Still might be as far as I know. They were two peas in a pod. He robbed my Mom in her own house. The bother wouldn't do much as say a word and he's a cop. Shameful!
I can go on and on with personal examples and a lot of other illustrations.
I studied crime in my area to become aware of probability of threats to my students, so I'll try not to bore you with too much more information.
I'm sure that those who read the criminal records of prior arrests for felonies will learn the motive that murderer had for killing that woman. Whatever it was, it was a sin problem that spiraled out of control.
Anyone who lives in a big city has a higher risk of becoming a victim of crime, however I see plenty of crime in rural areas too. Most of it is committed by white males. Different motives though.

When we can learn what the motives of these criminals are, we can take steps to help prevent becoming victims.
Since I had a career in personal protection, I have an interest in educating friends how to avoid common threats. The more we understand them, the more wisdom we can have to avoid needless suffering.
