How is this not Faith + Works?
You must believe, and you must obey His commands. So if you don't believe, or you don't obey His commands, you are not saved, isn't this what you are saying?
Much love!
Obeying God and doing His will is not a “work” in the way many people use that word.
Jesus said in Gospel of John 6:29, “This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.” So even faith is called a work, but it is not a work of earning. It is a response to God.
When people speak against “works,” they often mean trying to earn salvation by human effort. But Jesus never taught that obedience is wrong. He said, “If ye love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15). Love leads to obedience. That is not earning. That is relationship.
In Gospel of Matthew 7:21 Jesus said, “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.” Doing the Father’s will is required. Yet it is not a payment for salvation. It is the fruit of a changed heart.
Think of it simply. A tree does not produce fruit to become alive. It produces fruit because it is alive. In the same way, we do not obey to become saved. We obey because we belong to God.
So is obedience a work? Yes, in the simple sense that it is an action. But no, it is not a work of earning or buying salvation. It is the natural result of faith and love.
