A person swinging an axe splits the wood. The swinging is the action. The splitting is what the swinging does. No one reads that sentence and thinks the splitting caused the swinging.

Now apply to Hebrews 6:6:

Swinging the axe is anakainizein or “renew” or continuously make upwardly profoundly new

Splits the wood is anastaurountas or “crucifies” or continuously upwardly crucify

Renew is what causes crucifixion. Hebrews declares the sacrifice once for all making this impossible.

When a bare participle follows a governing verb with no connecting particle, the participle describes what the action inherently involves. The swinging and the splitting. One motion described from two directions.

In Hebrews 6:6 a present infinitive is followed by a bare present participle with no connecting particle. Both present tense. Both carrying the same prefix. Both appearing nowhere else in the New Testament. Both placed side by side by the most sophisticated Greek writer in the canon.

The pattern appears throughout the New Testament. In every instance the participle does the same thing. In every instance no one argues.

John 5:44 — how can you believe, receiving glory from one another? The believing and the receiving. One involves the other. No one adds because.

Colossians 1:10 — to walk worthily of the Lord, bearing fruit and growing. The walking is the bearing fruit. No one adds while.

Hebrews 11:17 — by faith Abraham offered up Isaac, being tested. The offering is the being tested. Same event from two angles. Same author as 6:6. No one adds since.

Hebrews 12:1–2 — let us run the race, looking to Jesus. The running and the looking are one motion. Same author. Same letter. No one disputes this.

Heb 6:6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

Those of Israel following the kingdom gospel did not receive eternal life upon faith. They had to endure to the end and at resurrection receive eternal life. As a result if someone of Israel rejected what Christ did on the cross, there was nothing else by which they could be saved. No other, no repeat, no alternative.

In a way the Hebrews are being warned that for them it is Jesus or nothing.

Joh_8:24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.

Thanks for jumping in — I really appreciate you taking the passage seriously. The “Jesus or nothing” urgency you highlight is exactly right; the letter does hammer that point.

Here’s the way I’m seeing it:

In Hebrews 6:1 the writer tells his readers: Stop laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works.

Then in 6:6 he says it is impossible to renew them again into repentance — because that would mean crucifying the Son of God again and holding Him up to public shame.

I see the “repentance” in both verses as the same foundational repentance — the very first turning from sin to God that they did when they first believed. The writer is basically saying: “Don’t keep going back and trying to re-lay that same foundation. It’s impossible to renew it again, because doing so would require another crucifixion — and Jesus is a once-for-all sacrifice.”

He says it plainly a few verses later:“Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly… but as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.” (Hebrews 9:25–26)

And again:“By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” (Hebrews 10:10)“By a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.” (Hebrews 10:14)

The word we translate “fallen away” (parapesontas) literally means “to fall beside” — like a slip or a stumble. Jesus even used the noun form of that same word when He taught us to pray: “Forgive us our trespasses” (Matthew 6:14–15). So maybe this verse isn’t talking about full-blown apostasy at all, but about ordinary sin or trespass that the conscience keeps dragging back to the foundation.

Just an interesting way of looking at the verse. Curious what you think?

No, I don't agree with you. People DO fall away. Plus the Bible says plainly that there will be a great falling away in the end times. I think we're already seeing it happen with so many people only wanting to hear what their itching ears want to hear.

Just accept what the Bible says and don't fall away - the Holy Spirit will help you to endure to the end and stay faithful.

God bless you for trying to understand God's word and explaining what you believe.

But why do people make it complicated and causing confusion about what they are saying.

It would seem like it would be common sense from reading what it means.

Thou shalt not steal which should be enough explanation.

But will someone say let me break it down to all my fellow saints what this meaneth.

Do not pick up an article of the material kind and structure composed of atoms from the land of matter from materials the Lord made and sneak it off ever so subtle and quietly as to not be discovered and found out what thou doest and are up to.

And do not claim it as your own displaying it proudly and show it to your friends with bragging and boasting of the arrogant persuasion to gain admiration and adoration and any other word like that ending in tion.

And if thou sellest it for money whether paper or metal thou errorest badly for making a profit of a stolen item from another person.

And do not use a weapon to steal another person's possession whether made of wood, whether pine, or maple, or oak, or whatever wood it be comprised of, or any metal, whether iron, or brass, or steel, or copper, or any metal theretofore, or do not use the bare fists to take an item that does not rightfully belong to you in the first place whether big hands, medium sized hands, or small hands.

Now you understand the meaning of thou shalt not steal.

I am sorry for the sarcasm explain how you like.

Heb 6:4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the to tHoly Ghost,
Heb 6:5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,
Heb 6:6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

I believe a lot of people do not understand what this means.

It is obvious these people were saved because they were partakers of the Holy Ghost.

But they fell away which they lost salvation and they cannot be saved again.

This is not speaking of a person that is saved but went back to worldliness and it would have been better not to have known the way of righteousness than to depart from it.

This does not say they fell away for they still claim Jesus is Lord and Savior.

For that is correctable.

This passage is not correctable.

They fell away because they stopped believing the truth by believing another reality whether atheist, another religion, or Jesus is not Lord and Savior.

In which they cannot be saved again.

It is like the Bible says the saints will not be gathered unto Christ until there is a falling away first and the man of sin claims to be God.

Which they stopped the preaching of the Gospel and the belief in a personal God on a world wide level all nations governments in cooperation.

Where they used to allow it.

Which allows the man of sin to rule over them.

Some people think it is the Church but the gates of hell cannot prevail against the Church and hypocrites do not belong to the Church.

So the Church can never fall away.

An example is this.

1Ti 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
1Ti 4:2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron.

2Ti 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
2Ti 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
2Ti 4:4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

The new age movement that interprets the Bible and religions according to the occult and evolution, and people are going to evolve to be spiritual, and greater, and Jesus became an ascended master among others, and there is no personal God, but they honor the God of forces the power of the Cosmos, and the New Age Christ is the next world teacher.

The time will come that people will not want to hear the truth of the Bible but want to hear it according to the new age.

They will come out at the latter times which is now.

And if we look at what is going on in the world the new age fits this description.

The new age christianity.

Which the New Age Christ, antichrist, will be of the new age and harmonize the religions by the new age interpretation.

Some people will depart from the faith and embrace the new age christianity.

Which they lost salvation and cannot be saved again.

But if a person in the new age did not believe the truth and then believed the truth they can be saved.

But if they go back to the new age or another different reality they cannot be saved.

Yes, there are people who stand away aphistémi (literally to stand away): To depart, withdraw, remove, desert, fall away.

This word, aphistémi, is in verse 3:12 for those with an evil unbelieving heart versus those with the law on their heart in chapter 8. The same people in 4:1 Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us fear lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it. But 4:3 For we who have believed enter that rest.

Notice the promise to enter His rest still stands? It is not barred for those in 3:12 and 4:1. Those who aphistémi, the promise of rest still stands.

Jesus say there will be those who sprout up with "joy" but have not root and aphistémi (fall away). These are those who join the community of believers but have no root, no connection, they are the ones that are fruitless bearing branches that are taken away.

The word in 6:6 is not aphistémi but parapesontas literally means to "fall beside". This is the same word in verb form where Jesus said forgive us our "trespasses" or our fall besides. This is not a request to forgive us our apostasy, but our sins. Our sins where we have fallen out of bounds of righteousness by sinning.

Here are the NT examples in noun form and the Septuagent version of of the Greek OT in the verb form.

The noun cognate paraptōma occurs nineteen times in the New Testament (NA28). Every occurrence describes a trespass that grace addresses.

  1. Matthew 6:14 — if you forgive others their trespasses. Forgiven.
  2. Matthew 6:15 — if you do not forgive others their trespasses. Forgiven.
  3. Mark 11:25 — forgive, so that your Father may forgive you your trespasses. Forgiven.
  4. Romans 4:25 — delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification. Covered by the cross.
  5. Romans 5:15 — the free gift is not like the trespass. Adam's trespass — the most catastrophic in human history. Covered by grace.
  6. Romans 5:16 — the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. Justified.
  7. Romans 5:17 — because of one man's trespass, death reigned. Through Jesus Christ — grace reigns. Grace reigns.
  8. Romans 5:18 — one trespass led to condemnation for all. One act of righteousness led to justification for all. Justified.
  9. Romans 5:20 — where the trespass increased, grace abounded all the more. Grace abounded.
  10. Romans 11:11 — through their trespass salvation has come to the Gentiles. Not final.
  11. Romans 11:12 — if their trespass means riches for the world. Still reversible.
  12. 2 Corinthians 5:19 — not counting their trespasses against them. Not counted.
  13. Galatians 6:1 — if anyone is caught in a trespass, restore him gently. Gently restored.
  14. Ephesians 1:7 — forgiveness of our trespasses according to the riches of his grace. Forgiven.
  15. Ephesians 2:1 — you were dead in your trespasses. Made alive.
  16. Ephesians 2:5 — even when we were dead in our trespasses, God made us alive together with Christ. Made alive.
  17. Colossians 2:13 — dead in your trespasses, God made you alive, having forgiven us all our trespasses. All forgiven.
  18. James 5:16 — confess your trespasses to one another and pray for one another that you may be healed. Confessed. Healed.

Eighteen noun occurrences. The nineteenth is the verb parapiptō itself — Hebrews 6:6. The word this list is about.

Every occurrence: forgiven, covered, not counted, made alive from, gently restored, healed. Not one carries the semantic force of irrecoverable decisive apostasy. The word the tradition loaded to apostasy weight is the Lord's Prayer word for the trespasses God forgives daily.

The Septuagint uses the verb form parapiptō five times in Ezekiel.

  1. Ezekiel 14:13 — when a land sins against me by acting faithlessly. Trespass.
  2. Ezekiel 15:8 — because they have acted faithlessly. Trespass.
  3. Ezekiel 18:24 — when a righteous person turns away from his righteousness. Trespass. The heaviest usage in the word family.
  4. Ezekiel 20:27 — your fathers blasphemed me by acting faithlessly against me. Trespass.
  5. Ezekiel 22:4 — you have become guilty by the blood that you have shed. Trespass.

Five occurrences. Every one serious. And yet in the same chapter as the heaviest — Ezekiel 18 — God's response is not abandonment. Repent and turn from all your transgressions. Why will you die? I have no pleasure in the death of anyone. Turn and live — Ezekiel 18:30–32. The word's entire documented history, Old Testament and New, is the history of sin that God pursues.

This may not change your mind, but it may help you to see the other side.

And specifically speaking to the Jews in the last days (Jacob's trouble) before the return of their Messiah. Rejecting Jesus and taking the mark of the beast leaves no room for repentance.
No room for repentance is about Esau in Hebrews. Esau did not repent or change his mind about sin. He changed His mind about getting the blessing over food. The verse said don't be unholy like Esau who did this...What he did revealed His heart, not what he did made his heart unholy. it is not what goes into a man that defiles him, it is what comes out of his heart.

Here is the full study:

The Passage

Hebrews 12:14–17. Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled; that no one is sexually immoral or unholy like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal. For you know that afterward, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no chance to repent, though he sought it with tears.

What the Text Says Simply

Holiness sees the Lord. Unholiness does not see the Lord. Unholiness is trading the blessing for food. Esau was never holy. The trading revealed it. Plain and simple.

Esau was not made unholy by the trade. The trade showed he was unholy. The food was more real to him than the birthright. The immediate was more real than the eternal. That is unholiness. The behavior reveals the person.

The Three Warnings of 12:14–17

First warning — failing to obtain the grace. The Greek is hysterōn — falling short of, not reaching. The grace is there — at the throne, 4:16. The person does not reach it. They stop short. They eat at the bread table instead of going through the curtain to the mercy seat where the grace is dispensed.

Second warning — the root of bitterness. A root. Something growing inside the community. Spreading. Defiling many — not one person. Many. The strange teachings of 13:9 are xenais — foreign, unfamiliar. Something entered the community from outside. It took root. It spread. It defiled. The root of bitterness is the teaching that attached itself to the foods — the external means promising heart-strengthening that the author says cannot strengthen the heart.

Third warning — Esau. Bebēlos — profane, unholy. Treating the sacred as common. The same concept as koinon in 10:29. Esau treated the birthright as common — tradeable, exchangeable for food. The person of 10:29 treated the blood as common — koinon. Both words describe the same action: placing the sacred in the category of the ordinary.

The Vocabulary Connections to 6:7–8

6:7 — land that drinks the rain and produces useful vegetation receives blessing — eulogias.

6:8 — land that produces thorns is rejected — adokimos — near to being cursed, and in the end burned.

12:17 — when Esau desired to inherit the blessing — eulogian — he was rejected — apedokimasthē.

Same words. Blessing — eulogia. Rejected — dokimazō family. The author connected 6:7–8 and 12:16–17 with vocabulary. The agricultural image and the narrative image are the same image. The rain falls on both kinds of land. The birthright was given to Esau. What each does with what was received determines whether blessing or rejection follows.

The Inheritance Theme Through the Letter

9:15 — so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance.

1:14 — ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation.

6:12 — imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

6:17 — God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose.

12:17 — Esau desired to inherit the blessing and was rejected.

The same word — inherit — runs through the letter. The author placed Esau — the man who lost the inheritance — in a letter about inheriting. The theme is salvation. The inheritance is salvation. Holiness without which no one will see the Lord. Esau was unholy and did not inherit.

The Metanoia Connection

Esau found no place of metanoia — metanoias — though he sought it with tears. The same word as 6:1 (the foundational repentance to be left behind) and 6:6 (the repentance that cannot be renewed).

Esau's metanoia was not moral repentance. It was the undoing of the transaction. He wanted to reverse the exchange. He could not. Not because God was punishing him. Because the birthright had left his hands. The transaction was complete. No amount of tears reverses a completed exchange.

Esau was not sad he sinned. He was sad he traded. He wanted the blessing back. The tears could not undo the exchange.

What Esau Reveals About the Community

The author is writing to a community. Some are holy. Some are not. Some will see the Lord. Some will not. The author cannot see inside. But the behavior reveals. The trading reveals. The holding reveals. The letting go reveals.

Esau is the revealer. Not a complicated theological test case. The revealer. You see who you are by what you do with the birthright. Do you hold it? Do you trade it? Do you pass the bread and go in? Or do you sit at the bread table and call it enough?

The Hypostasis and the Promise

Two things are in the letter. Not one.

The promise — God's to keep. Cannot be broken. Secured by oath — 6:17. Impossible for God to lie — 6:18. I will remember your sins and lawless deeds no more — 10:17. The promise holds from God's side regardless.

The hypostasis — the person's to hold. 3:14 — we have become partakers of Christ if indeed we hold fast the beginning of our hypostasis firm to the end. The holding is theirs. The letting go is theirs. The hypostasis can be traded. The hupostolē of 10:39 — the pulling back under — is the same root. One is the essence held. The other is the pulling back under. The word itself tells you what happens when the holding stops.

Esau traded his hypostasis. He had the birthright — the substance, the essence. It was real. It was his. He traded it for a meal. The transaction revealed who he was.

No room for repentance is about Esau in Hebrews.

Who is a picture of the Jews in the tribulation who reject Jesus and not inheriting the kingdom promised to them on earth where Christ reigns from the throne of David. The Church Age has ended, and God turns his attention once more to the nation of Israel.

To apply this to the body of Christ is bad theology and a failure to rightly divide the word of truth.

It's not God who leaves. It's the person.

God doesn't take our free will away. Why is that so scary?

God will help those who really want to stay with Him to do so by His Holy Spirit, even through persecution, tribulations and all other kinds of difficulties.

This is important to know for the end times. The falling away is already happening. People are already departing from true and sound doctrine and refusing to listen to God.

And God isn't going to force them. See how that works now? It's people who leave, not God.

1Ti 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
1Ti 4:2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron.

2Ti 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
2Ti 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

Col 4:6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person. Be humble. Be a teacher. Be a mentor.

You say you know what this verse means yet what does 4:1 say. Does the promise still stand to enter His rest?

Do you know his oath as Hebrews 6 says this settles all disputes as it is impossible for God to lie. Chapter eight and 10 declare His oath:

8:12For I will be merciful toward their iniquities,
and I will remember their sins no more.”

10:17: “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”

This is quoted twice. This is so we will not miss His oath to us. Will he remember or will people add to the words written and say except this or that.

7:25 Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.

Now he died one time for us. As the writer says:

Hebrews 9:25-26 Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters the holy places every year with blood not his own,for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world

  • Hebrews 7:27“Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself.”
  • Hebrews 9:12“He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption.”
  • Hebrews 9:26“Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But he has appeared once for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself.”
  • Hebrews 10:10“And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”

Closely related verses (same theme, slightly different wording):

  • Hebrews 9:28 – “…so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many…”
  • Hebrews 10:2 – “…the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all…”
  • Hebrews 10:12 – “…he had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins…”
  • Hebrews 10:14 – “For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.”

How you read 6:6 cannot violate all the other words of God.

This is an example of a person ignoring the words of God they don't like.

"For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries. 28 Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?"

Certainly there are many warnings about partaking of sin once one is born again.

This section, however, is about how it is impossible to be born again after being born again.

It is impossible to renew such a person in the manner in which they were brought into salvation.

Now that they are a child of God they will face correction, punishment, or even excommunication with the intent to produce godly sorrow so that they might confess their sins and turn from their ways.

The writer ends the passage with this:
“Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. And again, “The Lord will judge His people.” 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God."

So this is about correcting the wayward believer who is willfully sinning NOT about losing his place in Christ.

Furthermore, no man may crucify the Lord for themselves. It is impossible.
And no man may bring shame upon the Lord. That is also impossible.

The believer caught in sin cannot, AGAIN, be born of the Spirit. But because he is born of the Spirit and of the house of God, he will face the correction that God brings to him; first through the saints and lastly by His own hand. It is always best to heed the word of correction spoken by the elders than to have the Lord intervene directly.

As you can see, the hard teachings of God are hard to take, so they try to soften it making it mean something softer.

That changes the original meaning of what God is trying to teach. So how can one take the hard words of God? Through His Holy Spirit. It's the only way to be able to accept it.

It's is really puzzling and alarming how they don't even realize they're actually fulfilling the prophecies of the end times.

Can someone verify the following for accuracy

No, your OP is not accurate. A present participle indicates an action that as happening at the same time as, in the present of the main verb by which it is governed. The aorist participle indicates an action or state that occurred in the past of the main verb that governs it.

6:6 καὶ (and) παραπεσόντας (after falling away, aorist active participle) πάλιν (again) ἀνακαινίζειν (to be renewing, present infinitive) εἰς (into) μετάνοιαν (repentance) ἀνασταυροῦντας (while crucifying, present active participle) ἑαυτοῖς (to himself) τὸν υἱὸν (the Son) τοῦ θεοῦ (of the God) καὶ (and) παραδειγματίζοντας (while putting to open shame).

Therefore, in Heb. 6:6, the person’s crucifying Jesus again and his putting Jesus to open shame is happening at the same time as the attempt to renew that person to repentance. And Paul says that for him it is impossible to renew such a person to repentance by emphasising again the six elementary principles that such a persons has chosen to ignore or reject, while they are crucifying and pillorying Jesus, so he will move on to teaching his audience more meaty doctrines.

Likewise,
John 5:44 — how are you able to believe, while receiving, at the same time as you are receiving, glory from one another? The believing and the receiving are synchronous.

Colossians 1:10 — to walk worthily of the Lord, while bearing fruit and while growing. The walking and the growing is happening at the dsame time as the walking worthy.

Hebrews 11:17 — by faith Abraham offered up Isaac, while being tested, at the same time as he was being tested.

Hebrews 12:1–2 — let us run the race, while looking, at the same time as looking to Jesus. The running and the looking are sychronous.

You are the person I am looking to find. Thank you for the engagement. I agree with you this is simultaneous. This is like a hammer hitting a nail simultaneously. When you do it, the other happens. Would you be willing to work with me to discover something about your thought process. This is will help me understand.

First, do you have a deep understanding for Anakainizein and who it targets in the sentence by greek grammar?

First, do you have a deep understanding for Anakainizein and who it targets in the sentence by greek grammar?
I don’t know how you measure a deep understanding. Anakeinizein (ana + again, kain + new, -iz = cause to be, -ein = present infinitive post-fix) is a present active infinitive, "to cause to be renewed”, referring to an action continuing in the present. In this passage anakainizein is targeting “those having once been enlightened, and having tasted of the heavenly gift, and having become partakers of the Holy Ghost, and having tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, and having fallen away (all aorist participles). "

The synchronicity of a present participle with its governing verb may be explained in various ways.
The hammer hitting the nail drove/is driving/will drive/drives it into the wood. In this case, the grammar simply says that the two events are occurring together. Our experience of nailing may lead us to ascribe the nails penetration into the wood as caused by the hammering, but the grammar itself does not indicate causation.

Driving to work, he ran over an opossum. The two events are synchronous, but driving to work did not cause him to run over the opossum.

Anakeinizein (ana + again, kain + new, -iz = cause to be, -ein = present infinitive post-fix) is a present active infinitive, "to cause to be renewed”,
That should say - "Anakeinizein (ana + again, kain + new, -iz = cause to be, -ein = present infinitive post-fix) is a present active infinitive, "to be causing to be renewed…” - a continuous action in the present.
