It is very unfortunate that folks just don’t understand that Israel had been given two covenants in their journey from Egypt to the Promised Land (Deuteronomy 29:1).
(Deuteronomy 1:1-5) shows Moses explaining the second covenant on the Plains of Moab forty years after the first covenant Israel received at Mount Horeb in the desert of Sinai. As you read through the book you will notice that Moses writes about “this law” when speaking of the Moab Covenant and writes “His Law” when speaking of the covenant from Sinai. There is much difference between the two and the latter is the covenant which Hebrews tells us was now obsolete.
The Sinai Covenant from Mount Horeb was never cancelled and folks should consider the implications instead of their outright rejections.
The blood covenant made at Sinai was broken by Israel, which meant they had to be separated into pieces like the covenant animal was and destroyed, because that is how blood covenants worked.
And the LORD said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people: Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a great nation. Exodus 32:9-10
But Moses interceded and God spared them.
And Moses besought the LORD his God, and said, LORD, why doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people, which thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power, and with a mighty hand? Exodus 32:11
And the LORD repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people. Exodus 32:14
That is why another covenant at Moab had to be made; the Sinai covenant was no longer in force because one party broke it.
