Jesus said, “I will build MY church…” in Matthew 16:18. It belongs to Him. It is HIS church. He is the HEAD of His church—not some man, board, council, convention, or other organization. Eph. 5:23, Col. 1:18.
Jesus claims to have ALL AUTHORITY both in heaven and ON EARTH. Matt. 28:18. No one on earth has the authority to CHANGE what God has said in His word. God has spoken, and men and culture cannot change what God has said; that does not mean they have not tried—and are still trying. Revelation 22:18-19 gives a warning to those who try to “add to” or “take away from” what God has said; specifically saying God will take away your name from the Book of Life.
That being said, the first thing we notice about the congregations of churches in the New Testament is that they are called “churches of Christ” in keeping with what Jesus said in Matt. 16:18 and Eph.5:23. Romans 16:16
1st century Christians were warned not to “forsake” the assembling of themselves together in Hebrews 10:25. God expected them to engage in “worship.”
There are five acts of worship in which we see Christian’s engaging or were specifically commanded.
1) singing - Eph. 5:19, Col. 3:16 we are to “admonish and teach one another” singing with grace in our hearts to the Lord.
2) Praying - pray without ceasing, 1 Thess. 5:17. We are told to pray for many things— the sick, the brethren, kings and those in authority, just to name a few.
3) preaching or studying the word of God. Acts 20:7 - when the Church assembled on the first day of the week ( Sunday for us), Paul preached to them. In Col. 4:16, we see that the epistles that came from Paul and the other writers were passed around and were to be read in all the churches—presumably when they were assembled together.
4) the Lord’s Supper - In Acts 20:7 the early church came together on the first day of the week to partake of the Lord’s Supper.
5) Giving - Paul commaned all of the churches to “lay by as they have been prospered, on the first day of the week.” He called this the “collection for the saints.”
1 Cor. 14 gives us more information about the churches in the New Testament. It has to do with spiritual gifts of the Holy Spirit which were necessary in the early church because they had no written Bible to guide them as we do. They had to depend on the Holy Spirit to guide them into all truth. How else could they know what to do? Or what God wanted? But there were very specific rules for these gifts and limitations placed on certain things and people. The first thing to notice is that these instructions are for the church when it is assembled together. See verses 23 and 26. The main point is in verse 40; “LET ALL THINGS BE DONE DECENTLY AND IN ORDER!” Paul says God is NOT the author of CONFUSION! Verse 33. He says, if a visitor comes into your assembly and you are all talking at the same time, speaking in tongues and prophesying, they will think you are mad or out of your mind! The prophets were to prophesy one at the time and if one is speaking, the others need to keep silent! “You can all prophesy one by one.” Verse 3. And NO one is to speak in a tongue UNLESS there is someone there who can interpret that tongue. You see, spreading in tongues was not for “show”! It served a purpose for edification.
The Holy Spirit says in verse 34 that women in the church assembly were to “KEEP SILENT”. “For they are NOT PERMITTED to speak.” Verse 35- “It is SHAMEFUL for women to speak in the church.” Those are not my words. That is not my command. That is what God says. That is what the Holy Spirit teaches. There are many “loopholes” used to try to get around these verses, but Paul says, in the VERY NEXT VERSE, “…the things that I write to you are the COMMANDMENTS OF THE LORD.” And in chapter 4:17 - “…who will remind you of my ways in Christ, AS I TEACH EVERYWHERE IN EVERY CHURCH.” This was not instruction just for the church at Corinth. This letter was to be read in all the churches.
Time and space do not permit us to go on into the New Testament pattern for the organization and work of the church. But suffice it to say that God has not left his church up to men to make it into whatever pleases him. God left us instructions and a pattern of what He wants. There are commandments to be obeyed, and “an order” to be followed. We do not have permission from God to make the church into something according to our thought and wishes. It is not to be used for ENTERTAINMENT” as if we need to improve on God’s plan. It was to be used for the edification and benevolence of the saints.
Denominationalism can be so confusing. It is confusion. How can we know what is right and what God wants or what God will accept? We must go back to the Bible. See the kind of church God made for Christians in the first century. There still is a church of Christ just like the one in the New Testament existing today. One that just sings, prays, preaches God’s word and takes the Lord’s supper and gives on the first day of the week. Whose women keep silent in the assembly. Investigate the church of Christ—both in the Bible and the ones existing today.
