Yes, faith comes first and we are saved through faith. (
Ephesians 2:8) Not faith and baptism.
Yet many folks in various false religions and cults have been water baptized anyway without believing unto salvation. Such folks may believe "mental assent" that Jesus Christ exists, is the Son of God and that His death, burial and resurrection of Christ "happened." Well even the demons believe that, yet these folks are not believing in/trusting in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ as the ALL-sufficient means of their salvation (
Romans 1:16;
1 Corinthians 15:1-4) and are instead, are trusting in water baptism + other works to save them.
False. In
Mark 16:16, Jesus said - He who believes and is baptized will be saved
(general cases without making a qualification for the unusual case of someone who believes but is not baptized) but he who
does not believe will be condemned. The omission of baptized with "does not believe" shows that Jesus does not make them equal in importance. Condemnation rests on unbelief and not on a lack of baptism. So, salvation rests on belief. *NOWHERE did Jesus say, "whoever is not baptized will be condemned." If water baptism is absolutely required for salvation, then why did Jesus not mention it in the following verses? (3:15,16,18; 5:24; 6:29,40,47; 11:25,26). What is the ONE requirement that Jesus mentions 9 different times in each of these complete statements?
BELIEVES. *What happened to baptism? *Hermeneutics.
Romans 5:1 - Therefore, having been
justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have
access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. That is not merely a first step towards receiving salvation. Faith receives salvation.
Your logic is flawed and your church of Christ indoctrination runs deep.
The forgiveness of sins, washing away our sins, saves, is
signified but not procured in the waters of baptism. A symbol is not the reality but is a
picture of the reality.
John 20:31 - but these are written that you may
believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that
believing you may have life in His name. *No mention of baptism. To say that baptism is necessary is to "twist" what John clearly said in
John 20:31 and multiple other passages of scripture in the book of John. (
