I'll admit to not following the comics, but I like to think that Tony's carefree, playboy lifestyle is just a mask; think Batman Returns.Plus, people can grow and improve their character, maybe He just needs to be introduced to Jesus, eh?
I loved superheroes growing up. I've always wanted to be one ever since I can remember.
Actually, according to the comics, Stark's character is exactly as the movies portray him. They've done an excellent job of representing him. Robert Downey Jr. also does an excellent job portraying the character also. Then again, Downey doesn't need to act to play Stark. All he has to do is be himself. *lol*
As far as character goes, Iron Man and Batman are very much opposites. Bruce Wayne is a tortured soul with very deep convictions who prefers to keep to himself. Basically, the Batman personna is supposed to be the "real" Bruce Wayne. Iron Man is just the opposite. Stark could care less who knows he's Iron Man simply because Stark is that darned arrogant and enjoys the attention.

Let's be fair to Iron Man. Even if he is a genius, billionaire, philanthropist, and playboy, the man must have a heart (as in the objective seat of sentiments, not bodily organ).
Consider the fact he fights evil in his spare time and works to bring the world limitless energy. Not exactly a man of small conviction; he just indulges in activities on the side that are not exactly characteristic of a man with convictions, hahaha.

Was there an Avenger that had electrical powers? Cause I could see Ben Franklin as that Avenger. Of course, George Washington would be Captain America. Betsy Ross would probably be your Black Widow. What about Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, John Hancock or any of the other founding fathers of America?
How about those from other countries, what of your major National Hero's would fit into the Avenger roles?

Nah Doctor Doom is just a regular guy, like Iron Man. He doesn't have any powers (although he is an accomplished sorceror, like Doctor Strange, who, incidentally, is also an Avenger now). However, like Iron Man, Doctor Doom has a massive intellect and has crafted robotic armor for himself which gives him various abilities. Definitely one of my favorite villains. Would be nice if they would do a quality reboot of the Fantastic Four (although I certainly have no problem with keeping Jessica Alba).
One of spider man's villains, Elektro, is able to harness and project electrical energy. As far as the Avengers go, don't forget Thor! As the Norse god of thunder, he is able to call upon massive bolts of lightning to smite his enemies (like he did to Iron Man in the Avengers movie when they were fighting, and he also used it against the big eel things as they were coming out of the interstellar portal near the end of the movie).
When Thor used this ability against Iron Man in the comics, it didn't charge him up like it did in the movie. It fried his suit.
Storm, of the X-Men, having the ability the generate and control weather, is also able to wield lightning bolts.

Although, old Ben is lucky he wasn't turned into the Human Torch after that whole kite being struck by lightning ordeal.
Personally, Nicola Tesla comes to mind.

Hahaha, Tesla was too asexual and classically introverted to be Iron Man though. Half-way between Tony Stark and Bruce Banner.
