Sorry if this topic has already been asked. I haven't figured out where/how to search a particular forum's threads yet. So if this question has been asked before I apologise. I know it is the unforgivable sin. What IS it though? What is a practical example? I have heard it is attributing works of God to Satan and I have heard that it is simply refusing to accept what Christ did on the cross for your sins. Maybe the answer is still different yet? I wish J Vernon McGee were still alive. He may have talked funny but he sure knew his bible. If anyone has McGees answer to this question somewhere could you please post it here? Thanks for your time. -Bob

Lets say your in church and your having an awesome time in the spirit, or you have an ailment and your healed, you know in your heart of hearts that the Holy Spirit healed you, but you walk out saying "that wasn't God" to deny the Holy Spirit when you see the evidence of His works is blasphemy.

The blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is the continual rejection of the Spirit.
John 16:8
(8) And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
Ephesians 6:17
(17) And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

This shows the work of the Holy Spirit and shows the Spirit uses the Bible. If we continually reject the work of the Spirit upon our heart then eventually we will come to a point where we will not here His voice any more.

Matthew 12:24-31
(24) But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.
(25) And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:
(26) And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand?
(27) And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges.
(28) But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you.
(29) Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house.
(30) He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.
(31) Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.

It was through the spirit of God Jesus worked. The Pharisees rejected the work of the Spirit of God, they were convicted that Jesus was the Christ but rejected it. When Stephen spoke to them in Acts 7 they blocked their ears, they did not want to hear the word of God, they were convicted by the Spirit of God but rejected the conviction.

I believe you have to realise what the Holy Spirit is, where the Holy Spirit is, and all that comes with the Holy Spirit (works, revelation, anointing, etc), to know what blaspheming against It is...

My friend first of all... You have to have the Holy Spirit as an indwelling Spirit before you can sin against Him. Remember how JEsus said.... And you will recieve great power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. Acts 1:8. Well part of that power is power over ALL sin. If it was not so, then that spirit would not have been THE HOLY SPIRIT.

Ok so now we have the same power Jesus had becasue we have the Same Holy Spirit. If we now want to do a sin, we have to get rid of the Holy Spirit FIRST. So ANY sin we do AFTER WE RECIEVED THE HOLY SPIRIT is the sin against the Holy Spirit. That is called Blashemy against the Holy Spirit! Or SIN against the Holy Spirit. Such a person can NEVER be saved again. Not even the blood of Jesus. God says they are the dog that turned to his own vomit again... For they KNEW righteousness, becasue the Spirit made them part of the righteousness... 2 Peter2:20 22.

no, that is not the unpardonable sin.
this was:

Matthew 12
Jesus and Beelzebub

22Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he could both talk and see. 23All the people were astonished and said, “Could this be the Son of David?”

24But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, “It is only by Beelzebub,d the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons.

25Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. 26If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand? 27And if I drive out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your people drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. 28But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

29“Or again, how can anyone enter a strong man’s house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can rob his house.

30“He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters. 31And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. 32Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.

33“Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit. 34You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. 35The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. 36But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. 37For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”

though i must say you are basically blaspheming to claim you have the same power Jesus had.

what's all this: "we want to sin so we have to get rid of the Holy Spirit first"?

you people just love to make things up - and you better be careful doing it. it far more serious than you think. judgment begins at the house of God, and every false teaching you present as supposed Truth by the Spirit of Truth is a terrible thing.

Dear God help us all.

If we continually reject the work of the Spirit upon our heart then eventually we will come to a point where we will not here His voice any more.
rejecting conviction of sin and the testimony of the Spirit through the preaching of the gospel is NOT THE blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.

hardening of the heart because men love their sin and do not fear God is not fatal unless God Himself deems a man reprobate.

above you are describing a rejection of the salvation message. naturally this results in a denial of the Spirit's work, and therefore a rejection of salvation.

that's NOT the unpardonable sin - men can reject the gospel all their lives and then one day be convicted and be saved -so how is that unforgivable??

the unpardonable sin is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit; attributing the miracle working of power of Jesus Christ as He stood before them to SATAN. exactly as you clipped and pasted here, to add your previously loose definition.

here you allow scripture to speak....

Matthew 12:24-31
[/B](24) But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.

When Stephen spoke to them in Acts 7 they blocked their ears, they did not want to hear the word of God, they were convicted by the Spirit of God but rejected the conviction.
then you add to it!
leaving out the critical part:

"But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils."

with Christ Jesus standing right there before them, they called the Holy Spirit Beelzebub the prince of the devils!!!

It is denying Jesus is GOD –The Holy Spirit speaks to all of us. He is knocking on our heart asking us to ask Jesus in, but when we deny that -- we deny the Holy Spirit

The meaning of blasphemy is strictly "to speak evil".
Blasphemy of the Son in the context is when they claimed that Y'Shua did loving works while being demon possessed.
But it's anything you can say about Him that assigns evil.

Blasphemy of the Spirit is to claim that YHWH's Spirit, that is, His thoughts, intent, purpose, essence, is evil, though He does good works, He sustains even the wicked in patience.

You cannot truly call the Spirit evil unless you know it. (though you may think you can)
And if you know it, you cannot call it evil.
It is an unforgivable sin, because it's an impossible sin.
You are only accountable to your level of understanding. Anything greater is unrighteous.
It's one of many "catch 22's" for the purpose of revealing something deeper to us.

You can't understand it unless you can forgive anything that's been done to you.

"Forgive them Father, they know not what they do"

Peace.

I did not say this, Jesus did... John 14:12... Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

what's all this: "we want to sin so we have to get rid of the Holy Spirit first"?
God says this about His side and the dark side....
Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

How can the Holy Spirit have communion with sin? He CANNOT! I hope you understand that when the Holy Spirit is in a person that person CANNOT sin... 1 John 3:9... So if a person does have the Holy Spirit in him, how can he sin? I wonder if a person is FILLED with the Holy Spirit where is his spirit? Because for me filled means there is only ONE thing in there and it FILLS, there is no place for something else... IT IS FILLED?

Worshiping God with such abandonment of your natural reservations that you break down crying because you have undeniably been touched by the Spirit of God, this is what i mean, when you are in the act of true worship, not just going through the motions

Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is simple, it's when a person a - after seeing the Holy Spirit at work - denies it is of God and calls it evil instead. Jesus Himself speaks of men who - thinking they are doing God a favor - actually persecute (or worse) other Christians because they really do not know God for themselves thus they've never actually experienced the Holy Spirit at work in their own lives. Because they are unable to identify the Holy Spirit at work, they actually deny the authentic work of the Holy Spirit in someone else's life.

This actually happens far more frequently in the modern Church than most would like to believe.

i see.

"abandonment of your natural reservations " as in lack of self control and order in church?

i'll assume "just going through the motions" refers to non-pentecostal/charismatic churches?

if i am assuming incorrectly, please set it straight.

this is not referring to a lack of self control in church (pentecostal varieties i assume): it is referring to antinomianism.

at what Laodicea said.
Blaspheme of the holy spirit is when you keep rejecting God, Gospel and you curse on him.

because the bible says people who are believers cannot curse on the holy spirit.

Matthew 7 15“Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. 16By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

21“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ 23Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’
