I know the rants about commercialization of Christmas; consumerism; its suppose to be CHRISTmas; Santa is Satan; the Christmas tree is a symbol of pagan worship of nature; coca-cola owns Christmas; Jesus wasn't born in December..blah blah blah...I am sure there are a bajillion of other threads on these topics; lets side step that :)

Think back to when you were a child, to the clearest or fondest memory you have of Christmas- what was so meaningful or magical about it?

Disclaimer: Forgive me if this thread is too early for people to start thinking of Christmas, I just came from Starbucks, and they had all their Christmas decor up. It has made me excited and reflective. I COULD wait 2 weeks or so to post this, but I'm impatient :p

For me it has always been the music. It's so powerful. Handel's Messiah makes me cry, especially the Hallelujah Chorus.

I always loved helping my parents cook huge dinners too...baking cookies...making candy. :)

I liked the Christmasy vibe in general. The decorations, the music, the anticipation of presents, all the Christmas specials on TV.
And the crafts!! I liked making my own Christmas decorations. I did so many random crafts using all kinds of things.
I enjoyed eating candy canes too. :p And tree decorating was always fun.

Now decorating kinda feels like a chore. What happened to me?? I feel so old, lol.

The programming was plain in simple: December 24 = Open one freebie.
December 25 = RIP TEAR AND SHRED ALL THE COLORFUL PAPER TO SEE WHAT SUPER DUPER AWESOME SURPRISE WAS INSIDE!!!!

It's a universal truth, everyone likes free stuff.

As a child I loved EVERYTHING about Christmas! The music , everytime I heard Christmas songs I couldn't help but feeel happy :) then the Christmas tree, decorated with all kinds of stuff, the whole season just gave me a warm feeling . And of course, the food and the presents! not to mention that sometimes my WHOLE extended family would get together, or at least some of my extended family. It was so much fun!
SIGH. The memories. I still love this time of the year :).

pretty sweet....sort of a funny tree.

:D I know right.

I always have a small tree. I'm never home on Christmas. We go to another city to celebrate Christmas.

Speaking of lights. I just looooove lights.

We have this Staro Rīga Festival of Light-every year. You can always see so many cool installations there. It is always fun. I think i'm going to it today (even i have a really bad cold ;/)

Here-> you can check it out->

When I was a kid, I don't think there was anything I didn't enjoy about christmas. Watching Home Alone and the Christmas Story, Listening to Elvis Presley and Garth Brooks christmas albums, and decorating the tree and making cookies.

I can't tell you about when I was a child at Christmas, but I can tell you about being a child at New Year's in the former soviet union.

In the USSR New Years was almost identical to Christmas (except it being a celebration of the New Year, not Jesus being born). We had a Santa Claus (literally same guy with a different name), we put up pine trees and decorated them. Kids got presents.

Basically the USSR stole all of the Western Christmas traditions and attached them to a different holiday that occurs just 5 days later.

So my memories are probably almost identical to many of yours except they don't involve going to church. I got presents. We put up the pine tree and decorated it. We had a big dinner and had special food that we could not afford all year long. There were many awesome kids' shows on TV about the holiday season and winter in general. Things like the nutcracker and etc. It brought joy and happiness to everyone in my family.

The USSR was an atheist state. But when I was growing up the Berlin wall had just collapsed and Ukraine began to celebrate Christmas once again. It was the orthodox Christmas on January 7th. It was strictly a religious holiday. I used to watch on TV the religious proceedings in the main Orthodox churches in Russia. People went to church. It was (and still is) similar to Catholicism in many ways.

I heard about Jesus through this holiday but didnt really understand what I was seeing all that much. It was the Western push to evangelize Eastern Europe that actually helped me become a Christian. Thanks to cartoons like Superbook (released on the one western channel we had in the 90s in Ukraine) that I saw as a little child.

I just remember trimming the tree with music right before watching Muppet Christmas Carol. That memory always stays with me.

I remember the first Christmas I ever had ... I was five... First year I was with my new adoptive family... I smelled things I had never smelled.. Cookies baking, music in the air.. I didn't know why people were wrapping things up or what a present was ... I remeber asking my mom why she was putting funny paper around things.
I thought it was funny to chop a tree down to bring it inside... even funnier putting lights on it :). I remember waking up in the middle of the night and on my way to the bathroom, I saw all these things under the tree and bikes.. I ran into my brothers room and woke him up yelling. " a robber broke in !! There must be more than one because they hid their bikes behind the tree... Christmas was unfamiliar to me, I had no idea all the beautiful traditions and love God had waiting for me in the years to come... my real Christmas gift was my new family :)
