I think the problem with Obama's endorsement of homosexual marriage is the philosophy he attempts to ground it in. While classical Lockean liberalism does indeed claim that all men are created equal and have inalienable natural rights, marriage is also defined as a pre-political institution that existed in the State of Nature.

From a Lockean perspective (the philosophy Obama uses to try and justify his position), marriage is a community of goods between a man and a woman, the chief end of which is to create an ideal environment of material stability for procreation. Humans are among a small number of species that establish such relationships.

Marriage is an institution that existed prior to the establishment of the state, and its purpose is to ensure the stable continuity of the species. So yes, everyone has the right to be married under a Natural Law conception of marriage. What this also means is that the entire idea of "homosexual marriage" is oxymoronic.

So everyone has the "right to be married", but according to Natural Law theory, gay marriage doesn't even exist. The rights-based philosophy that people attempt to employ in order to bolster the case for gay marriage ultimately destroys their own conclusion.

Why shouldn't they?

God has not given the athority to the government to perform marriages.

Romans 13: 4
For government is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong,
be afraid, because it does not carry the sword for no reason. For
government is God’s servant, an avenged that brings wrath on the
one who does wrong.

No where in any scripture old or new testiment did God mention government and marriage.

I thought of many things I could say. There is a ton of scripture I could post.
The more I thought, and studied about this. The more I realize that even if I could recite the whole bible it only shows me how much I don't, can't, or ever, know about God.

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom” (Ps 111:10; Prov 9:10; compare Job 28:28; Prov 1:7; 15:33).
Not till I have become humble and teachable, standing in awe of God’s holiness and sovereignty (“the great and awesome God,” Neh 1:5; compare 4:14; 9:32; Deut 7:21; 10:17; Ps 99:3; Jer 20:11), acknowledging my own littleness, distrusting my own thoughts and willing to have my mind turned upside down, can divine wisdom become ours.

What I've learned over the years - and I am STILL learning, believe you me! - is that God/Jesus is not found within the pages of a book but from within the heart of the individual. I realize how cliche that might sound but whenever we use the scriptures to demean another human being we are in no way preaching the 'Jesus message'. We simply cannot be. And yet, I see page after page on forums such as this that demonstrates quite clearly a quite vicious 'them and us' mentality by Christians ...'us' being the righteous ones whose task appears to be to seek out and demean 'them' (those) who we perceive as being the unrighteous or wicked. But, even then, we are often guilty of double standards and hypocrisy since we choose what 'sins' to target and what 'sins' to ignore. Furthermore, in our piousness we often lose sight of the fact that, according to scripture, none of us are as righteous as we think we are and can therefore hardly point the finger at anyone else. If we are to use the Bible solely as our source for finding God/Jesus we should still be executing disobedient children, those who profane the Sabbath, etc. etc. The list for executing 'sinners' is endless in the OT Bible. How do we get around that? We cherry pick . . .

But anyway, I do thank you for your humble response to my post.

Dudes, why does anyone care if they want to get married, its not like they're hurting you if they are happy then let them live how they want :)

I am very sorry you missed the point of the post. So much of Christianity wants a fluffy understanding God. So much that we bring God down to our level and we think he understands.
God is the same and will not change. It is our job to learn about him and be subject to GOD's standards.

I haven't judged anyone. I just apply the lies and sin
to Gods standards.

I am not concerned about Gay Marriage. I am not concerned about sin. We all sin and that is a fact.
What is bothering me here is how so many of us miss "The Holyness Of God".

Dudes, why does anyone care if they want to get married, its not like they're hurting you if they are happy then let them live how they want :)
That's just it. You assume a form of secular humanism. Pain makes it immoral. If no pain is inflicted, it's permissible. Unfortunately for you, that's not the Moral Law.

Many of them aren't doing it for the right reasons, that much is true. Marriage isn't a matter of two names on a piece of paper. That's the legal work that goes on the side, but that isn't what constitutes a marriage.

First of all who are you to say that someone is marrying for the "right" or "wrong" reason? Do you really think you have the right to go around saying one couple's marriage is ok but another isn't just because you happen to disagree with it?

If the legal work goes on the side then there should be a "marriage", which is religious, and a "partnership", which is legal. Would you allow homosexuals to get a partnership if it wasn't called marriage?

Oh come now, there's that morality thing again.

Nature doesn't care what feelings you have. You personally cannot remain logically consistant if you're not a theist proclaiming moral rights and wrongs.

Ok, let me ask you something since you insist on bringing up my religious views (which are, in my opinion, very irrelevant here). If you found out tomorrow that everything in the Bible was false (this is 100% hypothetical), and that there is no God: would you suddenly lose all morality? Would all your values and beliefs and principals evaporate? Would you go around killing people?

It really bothers me that people think non-theists have no morals. Let me throw this in as to hopefully put this ridiculous point your trying to make aside:

20120329-jik8621tiu73r4rm4jr2xindbj.jpg

Pray tell, where do we find out about these rights? Where do these rights come from?

Well, a lot from my parents as parents tend to pass down values to their children. Also a consideration of the pros and cons of my actions, and what I feel is a fair way to act. I consider myself to be a good person: I donate to charity, I help those I see needing help, and I am constantly trying to better the world. In the case of gay marriage it's as simple as this: I don't want people dictating how I should live, so I'm not going to dictate how others should live. Two men or two women marrying has absolutely no impact on my life, so denying that to them makes no sense to me. Regardless of whether or not I agree with their marriage, it does not make any impact on my life.

Now, can we please move away from my beliefs and discuss the topic of the thread?

Copious amounts of text ahead.

First of all who are you to say that someone is marrying for the "right" or "wrong" reason?
I have objective say in and of myself. Nor do you have objective say in and of yourself, to say that something is a marriage.

Do you really think you have the right to go around saying one couple's marriage is ok but another isn't just because you happen to disagree with it?
It has little to nothing to do with what I view it as. I have just spent the last couple of threads pointing out that we humans have no basis outside of God establish something of moral truth, let alone any truth. Rather, it's a matter of what God has revealed to us through his word.

If the legal work goes on the side then there should be a "marriage", which is religious, and a "partnership", which is legal.
Should? Where do you get this imperative from? Why should there be?

Would you allow homosexuals to get a partnership if it wasn't called marriage?
Ideally, no.

Ok, let me ask you something since you insist on bringing up my religious views (which are, in my opinion, very irrelevant here).
Actually it's not irrelevant. What we're dealing with most fundamentally is an astronomical difference in worldview. Which surprisingly is something you have apparently missed thus far.

If you found out tomorrow that everything in the Bible was false (this is 100% hypothetical), and that there is no God:
If there is no God, there is no moral imperative. No moral law. No moral right, no moral wrong. It's subjective. At most, morality under such a logical system is just personal preference. You don't like to get hurt. Big whoop. The universe doesn't care.

You should read about Objective Morality.

would you suddenly lose all morality?
Objectively yes.

Would all your values and beliefs and principals evaporate?
Yes. If there is no God(which of course there is not, which is why this question can even be asked in the first place) logically speaking, it would all be meaningless valueless mental garbage. Nietzsche would be right. At best "morality" would be a matter of who can enforce what, rather than what is true.

Would you go around killing people?
What would be wrong about that? If it's not wrong (which you can't say it is being non-theistic), what does it matter? Molecules are just molecules. A severed head is just a re-arrangement of molecules that have been rearranged a thousand times before. It is of no moral consequence whatsoever. We may not like it, we may object to it on the basis that we don't like it. We certainly could not consistently claim it as immoral. Stuff is stuff. The universe doesn't care about how you feel regarding severed heads for the sake of severing heads.

It really bothers me that people think non-theists have no morals.
Again, you misunderstand. I'm not saying you don't believe in a right or a wrong, and that you don't regulate yourself on that basis. What I am saying, is that your beliefs mean absolutely nothing to reality. Reality is, there is no right and no wrong under non-theistic logical systems.

I would have to deny scripture to say that those who are god-haters do not believe there is a right and a wrong.

Romans 2:14-16
[SUP]14 [/SUP]For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law.[SUP]15 [/SUP]They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them[SUP]16 [/SUP]on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.

Let me throw this in as to hopefully put this ridiculous point your trying to make aside:

This is irrelevant. The amount of "Bad" a person does, makes no difference as to whether there is a moral law or not. To argue that prison statistics makes Christians morally insufficient people, first goes into an indeterminable numbers game, and two is a total understatement of reality. The reality of the matter is, Christians are absolute moral filth. There is no good thing about us on our own account. WE have nothing of moral value to offer unto you for our defense from our own account, for by our own account we have no righteousness a'tall. You're in the same boat. ;)

The only righteousness one could have is on the account of Christ.

2 Corinthians 5:21
God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
One day, it might be yours.

Well, a lot from my parents as parents tend to pass down values to their children.
Appeal to Tradition is a fallacy that occurs when it is assumed that something is better or correct simply because it is older, traditional, or "always has been done." This sort of "reasoning" has the following form:

X is old or traditional
Therefore X is correct or better. (Source: click here)

Also a consideration of the pros and cons of my actions, and what I feel is a fair way to act.
How do you determine that a "pro" or a "con" is that? That there is something of value in either one? Is this a matter of fact, or of opinion? Why is fairness something that should be a requisite?

I consider myself to be a good person: I donate to charity, I help those I see needing help, and I am constantly trying to better the world.
How is it that you are good from doing those things? Are those things good? If they are good, on what basis is that determined? Is it your opinion that they are good? Is it a fact?

In the case of gay marriage it's as simple as this: I don't want people dictating how I should live, so I'm not going to dictate how others should live.
Okay, so why object to us? You want to do that, fine do that. Doesn't make you right, doesn't make you wrong on a non-theistic system. What you are doing is amoral since such a pronouncement of moral goodness or badness is not possible on a non-theistic system.

Two men or two women marrying has absolutely no impact on my life, so denying that to them makes no sense to me.
Allowing it makes equally less sense. The two positions are equally senseless under a non-theistic system. Doesn't matter. The universe doesn't care.

Regardless of whether or not I agree with their marriage, it does not make any impact on my life.
Cool.

Now, can we please move away from my beliefs and discuss the topic of the thread?
We are discussing the topic of the thread. Notice how much our posts are still about the rightness or wrongness of homosexual relationships proclaimed as marriage?

We don't have to marry someone of the same sex if we don't want to. Just focus on what you have control over-your own actions. God takes care of all right and wrong.

It has little to nothing to do with what I view it as. I have just spent the last couple of threads pointing out that we humans have no basis outside of God establish something of moral truth, let alone any truth. Rather, it's a matter of what God has revealed to us through his word.

Well I can't argue here because I simply disagree and it's a matter of opinion. I think that humans alone are responsible for morality. I believe that you can interpret the Bible a way and form any opinion on any political issue and use the Bible to back it up. There is no denying that this happens in probably every country with some form of religion.

I can say that not everyone is a Christian yet you're pushing what you believe God's law is on them. Maybe the gay couple wanting to get married don't follow the Bible. Why prevent them from marrying just because it fits your belief system?

Should? Where do you get this imperative from? Why should there be?

In my opinion everyone has the right to free will. You're breaking that. Of course you can argue that they shouldn't. I'll take it as your opinion, like everything else you say. I don't get why we're breaking it down to terminology here.

Ideally, no.

Why not?

If there is no God, there is no moral imperative. No moral law. No moral right, no moral wrong. It's subjective. At most, morality under such a logical system is just personal preference. You don't like to get hurt. Big whoop. The universe doesn't care.

You should read about Objective Morality.

That's actually exactly what I believe. Morality is subjective. I don't really think that anything is objective.

What would be wrong about [killing people]? If it's not wrong (which you can't say it is being non-theistic), what does it matter? Molecules are just molecules. A severed head is just a re-arrangement of molecules that have been rearranged a thousand times before. It is of no moral consequence whatsoever. We may not like it, we may object to it on the basis that we don't like it. We certainly could not consistently claim it as immoral. Stuff is stuff. The universe doesn't care about how you feel regarding severed heads for the sake of severing heads.

No, I'm not asking IS it wrong, I was asking whether you'd kill people or not. Would you lose your subjective sense of right and wrong?

Also, please don't tell me what I can or can't say. Seriously, I don't tell you what your philosophy is, don't tell me mine.

And you're right, the universe doesn't care. Since I have the belief that there is no god, I don't think it matters to any kind of higher power whether or not you're a murder or a rapist or a thief. However, I think that actions are good and bad. That's my opinion. Someone can argue with me that they have a different opinion. I don't think either one is right or wrong, it's just a difference of opinion.

I guess we should probably stop talking since you think that none of my opinions matter. Why are you even talking to me, then? Every time I say my opinion you respond with "don't you understand? you're beliefs mean absolutely nothing". I find it pretty despicable, actually, that you're so close-minded that you refuse to entertain the notion that my opinions are just as fair as yours.

-_- I also don't hate god. If I hated god I wouldn't be an atheist.

You're in the same boat. ;)

That's actually pretty sad that you see people as "absolute moral filth".

How do you determine that a "pro" or a "con" is that? That there is something of value in either one? Is this a matter of fact, or of opinion? Why is fairness something that should be a requisite?

Because I'm a human being. Wow, how does anybody determine pros and cons? They teach you that in elementary school. Go through the possible outcomes and see whether it would benefit you or hinder you, and lump it into a category accordingly. And I believe in absolute equality, so fairness is very important.

How is it that you are good from doing those things? Are those things good? If they are good, on what basis is that determined? Is it your opinion that they are good? Is it a fact?

I consider myself a good person. Doing those things doesn't make me a good person, but I think those are good actions.

It's opinion. Everything is opinion!

Okay, so why object to us? You want to do that, fine do that. Doesn't make you right, doesn't make you wrong on a non-theistic system. What you are doing is amoral since such a pronouncement of moral goodness or badness is not possible on a non-theistic system.

What I object to is someone trying to block a law that gives someone the same rights that you have.

Yeah I agree, I don't think anyone can objectively say whether what I'm doing is right or wrong. I happen to think it's the right thing to do, which is why I have my opinion on the matter.

Allowing it makes equally less sense. The two positions are equally senseless under a non-theistic system. Doesn't matter. The universe doesn't care.

Actually allowing it makes plenty of sense. I wouldn't want someone infringing on my rights. I see this group of people whose rights are being withheld, so I'm going to take action to end this.

And yeah, the universe doesn't care. I do.

We are discussing the topic of the thread. Notice how much our posts are still about the rightness or wrongness of homosexual relationships proclaimed as marriage?

I guess what I want to end here is the fact that I state my opinion, and you barge in saying "but you can't have an opinion, you're a non-theist.". Actually, I can and very much do have an opinion.

The government has the authority to arbitrate in disputes over property and cases of conflicting rights. That's why it has a role in marriage, in which property is held in community between the two individuals. The government doesn't make or define marriage - that is already defined by the very nature of creation (hence "natural law"). It is, however, involved in marriage for the purposes of dispute resolution and the maintenance of justice in relationships between individuals, which is the purpose of government in the first place.

Batman007, if morality is subjective as you say then what exactly is wrong with Christians attempting to impose what they perceive to be God's law on everyone else...?

And I think Jimmy is actually making a fair point with regards to the status of opinion. Perhaps if I could put words into his mouth, I think his objection to your stance is, at a fundamental level, something like this.

He isn't criticising the fact that you hold an opinion about a moral issue, he's saying that without a moral reality unto which it can be compared it actually becomes meaningless (noting, of course, that the same problem applies to his own opinion). So if you say that morality is "subjective", then your moral opinions are reduced to something along the lines of "blue is better than purple." Moral claims are reduced to absurd or irrational preferences because like the absence of the reality of a "best colour", there is no moral reality unto which any opinion could hypothetically be compared.

So an example would be your claim that everyone has a right to freedom of the will. An opponent would take the negative position and deny that. Unless there is an actual objective moral reality upon which you can base your claim that everyone has the right to freedom of the will, your statement is false and the proponent of the negative claim will always be correct. In the same fashion, the person saying "blue is not better than purple" will be correct because there is no objective "best colour."

Well I'm posting this in response to Zone's thread about Obama's call for gay rights making history. But it's very much a personal experience from this past week, so I'm also gonna promote my post here as a "blog". Man I really wouldn't choose this topic to be my first official "blog", because it's not what I'm all about, but what the heck, it happened to me, so let me tell you about it.

I just moved to a new subdivision (here in the Philippines) and I have one American neighbor. We started talking about a week or so ago and sorta became buddies. But then a few days ago we started talking about politics. So we talked all about Obama. He is apparently a big fan of Obama, and he sees Obama as persecuted, and says the real reason people are against him is racism (as if all people who are against Obama's policies are simply racist!). (My neighbor his white by the way.) At that point I had to make it clear that I wouldn't vote for Obama (regardless of his skin color) and that doesn't make me a racist.

Anyway, since we were talking all about Obama and his policies, I mentioned one of the main things about Obama, being the first president in US history to officially, vocally endorse gay marriage (with the whole shebang of giving children to gay "families", etc.). Well you wouldn't believe what happened.

It's amazing how liberal (and deceived) much of America has become, and is becoming. Don't get me wrong. I honestly did not preach at him, I wasn't condemning, self-righteous, etc. etc. I even said I don't care if gays shack up together; I don't think you can outlaw the act of homosexuality just like you can't outlaw fornication and adultery.

But to give innocent babies and children to sets of gay men and sets of lesbian women, and say "this your daddy and your daddy", or "this is your mommy and your mommy"... umm that's where your hurting innocent children. To put a baby or child into that is the ultimate homosexual indoctrination, and no our law shouldn't allow pairs of gay men and pairs of lesbian women to take over the lives of innocent children.

Well, though I was kind with my words, and not even as dogmatic as him, my neighbor took great offense. (By the way he's married to a woman, and he's not gay. But he has a lesbian sister, I later found out.) Anyway it's quite interesting what he did. He repeatedly did all of the following:

1. He insisted that it's SCIENTIFIC FACT that homosexuality is genetic. The scientists have discovered the "gay gene". According to him, no person has any choice in the matter, and it's nothing to do with anything environmental (not even being homosexually molested as a child, etc.). You're either "born that way" or you're not. It's SCIENTIFIC FACT. It's "science". (How can you argue with "science"?) *sigh*

2. He would actually use the Bible to support homosexuality. For one, he tried to say that the Bible doesn't say it's a sin. And for another, he referred to how Jesus "accepted" Mary Magdalene. (More on this in a moment.) [By the way Obama has done this too -- I mean used the Bible, or Jesus, at least referring to "what Jesus would do" -- I could show you a youtube clip of that.]

3. While using the Bible, at the same time he would diminish the Bible. I know this is totally contradictory to the previous thing. I mean, why would people quote the Bible in one breath, and diminish it in another breath? But this is what he constantly did. For example, when he insisted that the Bible doesn't say that homosexuality is a sin, well I pressed him on that and got him to acknowledge that it actually wouldn't matter at all even if I did prove to him that the Bible does say it's a sin. Because, he absolutely doesn't believe the Bible anyway. He repeatedly made it clear that it's a book written thousands of years ago by MEN, and we've progressed now -- we now know about the "gay gene"! And regarding Jesus "accepting" Mary Magdalene, well when I responded to that with the fuller context and message of Jesus, he couldn't accept those other parts of the Bible, or even the words of Jesus, and said those parts were written by men (so he just picks and chooses the parts he wants and makes his own religion).

Well, again, honestly, I didn't preach at him, I wasn't condemning, self-righteous, or obnoxious. He, however, was quite loud (in the street) and totally blew up at me in my face (I was actually bracing myself for a punch). It was at the point where I gave an honest Biblical response to what he referred to in the Bible, about Jesus "accepting" Mary Magdalene. I mean this is where he blew up, and couldn't take it anymore, when I responded to that. Would you like to know what I said that ignited him? (I wasn't trying to do so, honestly -- I was just being "me", or a child of God, and responding to what he said about the Bible.)

Okay................ you want to know?

When he said that Jesus accepted Mary Magdalene, I simply said the following:

Absolutely! Jesus said he did not come to condemn the world, but to save the world. He came to SAVE SINNERS. And his first message that he was preaching to people (recorded by the gospel writers) was "Repent!". We're all sinners and we all need to repent, and Jesus came to save sinners.

Well I had a hard time even finishing my words. He made it clear that he doesn't like words like "sin", "sinner", and "repent". Especially not in the context of homosexuality! (Though I meant it totally general, and made it clear that it applies to homosexuality, fornication, adultery, etc. -- sin is sin, and we all need to repent and be saved.)

Well he couldn't take that. He practically shouted, in my face: "YOU'RE VIOLATING ME!!!!!!!".

And the last thing he said was that he would send me the "proof" of the "gay gene" but he knows I wouldn't accept it anyway, because, according to him, that would prove that the Bible is wrong, and my "whole life would fall apart".

Those were his last words and we haven't spoken since.

Well, I now feel like people like this would accuse me and us Christians of "hate crime" just for believing the Bible. (And he even told me that it's wrong for me to even think these things in my heart.) And yet, it seems that he/they are the ones full of hate -- hate for the Bible and anyone who actually believes the Bible.

Funny thing is, I had actually prayed the night before to be at peace with all my neighbors. I least expected that I would have a problem with the American that I had become buddies with. But Jesus did tell us to not marvel if the world hates us.

I even tried to examine myself, but honestly, I did nothing but nicely, honestly respond in our long conversation. The only thing is, if I had known that he has a lesbian sister, I may not have mentioned my disagreement with Obama's support for gay marriage. But hey, we were talking all about Obama, and that's one major thing about Obama, and again, what it boils down to is giving innocent children to gays to be their "daddy and daddy" and "mommy and mommy". And this neighbor is so anti-Christ and anti-Bible, that this was bound to happen anyway. Jesus did say "woe to you if everybody likes you!".

yep. this antiChrist antiBible agenda has succeeded, as i see from your exchange with your neighbor.
very sad.
but you are right, Jesus said if they hated Him, they'd hate you too.
it's happened to me recently with my very own parents and sibling.

and this.....is exactly where it's all going.

Well, I now feel like people like this would accuse me and us Christians of "hate crime" just for believing the Bible.

maybe i'll tomorrow post on the hate crime portion of the agenda.
that's the end game. tied directly to all the PCisms.
it worked very well in the soviet system.

listen up for all the calls for "mental health screening" over guns (or whatever) - it's already started.
it's us who will be marked as mentally ill; haters; in need of re-education; confinement or worse.
bolshies had it down to a science.
good post Robo.

Batman007, if morality is subjective as you say then what exactly is wrong with Christians attempting to impose what they perceive to be God's law on everyone else...?

Because what you perceive to be god's law isn't everyone else's law. You are against homosexuals marrying which is great, honestly, I love that you have your own opinion. I even love that you vote (if you do) because that's democracy. However I strongly disagree with your vote because you're preventing other people from enjoying the same things you are allowed to enjoy.

Imagine someone decided that straight people can't marry because it disagrees with their belief system. They think it's wrong. Some even think it's disgusting and unnatural. Here you are living your life, doing what you think is right. Then people decide to vote against that. They decide you can't get married. Would you not feel upset that someone with a belief different from yours came in and started to control your life, made your private marital affairs a political issue?

Like I said, I encourage you to have your views. I just disagree with your using your views to control and impose on other people's lives.

Maybe the gay couple wanting to get married don't follow the Bible. Why prevent them from marrying just because it fits your belief system?

who is preventing?
they got what they wanted.
