I like to eat sandwiches with bologna and mustard.....

Sheesh, I've got a long list. :/ Some of these are obvious, I know. Sorry for the long post.

Saying that they know more about you than they actually could. Often goes along with insisting that you want them. Maybe they're hoping that a lie repeated often enough will become truth.

Threatening to kill or hurt themselves if you don't XYZ, or saying that they won't survive without you.

Trying to be a part of EVERY SINGLE THING that you're doing, getting involved in things that are none of their business and telling you what to do.

Blaming you for stuff that is obviously not your fault (and is often theirs).

Acting like you need them, and emphasizing how much they've helped you, when you can't think of a single thing they've actually done for you. Often goes along with trying to belittle you and your achievements.

Liberal use of over-the-top compliments that can't be rooted in any sort of reality or truth.

Claiming that YOU'RE trying to manipulate THEM, to keep you off-guard and on the defensive.

Trying to make you feel bad for needing personal space, and claiming that this means you don't care about them.

Now, on the brighter side. :D If people are good at being manipulative, it can be hard to spot. So, what I did was cling to Philippians 4:5-7. And the peace of God DID guard my heart and mind. He has shown me manipulative behaviors in others that I had overlooked, so I could watch out for them. He kept my feet on the ground and didn't let me buy their garbage. What would I do without Him?

One of the more disgusting things I have seen in politics is what I like to call the Charles Manson phenomena. There are some cads out there who will attempt to advance their careers by controlling women.

I'll be that guy and say that generally in professional circumstances, men are better at sniffing out cult-like BS than women are, partially because as, Still pointed out, these gents appeal to the nurturing and more forgiving side of women. Men are more likely to detect the raw pursuit of power when it is evident, so these gents tend to avoid first-hand contact with men who might disagree with them.

It is interesting and somewhat depressing to watch.

I'm sure there are gents out there who do similar things to get sex and the like.

One I've seen a bit is begging the status quo. Psychologically speaking, this one is pretty difficult to avoid even when you know it's happening. Thankfully Christ has provided an even more powerful means of avoiding it. There's a reason we were called out of the world.

Above all else, the greatest tool of manipulation is isolation. It comes in many forms: The mental isolation is easiest, convincing her that she IS the only one(lie). It then becomes emotional isolation: since she IS the only one for you, then you should be the only one she has feelings for. And finally comes the physical isolation, since she only has feelings for you, this becomes pretty simple.

Thank you, this is very insightful!

Reading through this thread has made me think about if I've ever done any of those things to someone and if any of those has ever been done to me.

Does calling a guy sweetie and saying you'll love him forever if he does you a favor count as manipulation?? I asked a good guy friend I work with to get us some ice at the front counter. I realized what it sounded like and was horrified so I've never done it again. I still tease him, but that's cus we're friends like that and I can get away with a bit of teasing.

No -- as long as you have the kind of friendship / relationship in which the limits of this kind of thing is well understood.

( The way you describe it - it sounds pretty innocent and 'light-hearted' to me. I am assuming that there is a certain 'understanding' between the two of you... )

Yes -- it is manipulation if you do it with the intent to deceive him, take advantage of him, lure him with false-hope, etc.

:)

Another thing both men and women do (but primarily women) is suddenly liking everything their crush likes. You're a vegetarian? Me too! You love muscle cars? Me too! You're planning on majoring in Floral Arranging? ME TOO!! The list goes on and on... my ex-boyfriend totally tricked me with the "me toos". I believed him and the plethora of lies that followed for 3 years.

I used to do that.
Now, I tell my guy this is how I am. This is why I am the way I am. Don't like it find another woman.
He is still with me.

They offer Floral Arranging majors in university these days!?! I must tell Descyple, he's been trying to perfect the bouquet he has been planning on sending Chrissy

Here in Oklahoma there is a somewhat detestable practice of smoking and grilling baloney (or Bologna for those who learned to spell it on a first name basis... go ahead, sing the song, I dare you not to.) as if it were actual meat. It is such a common practice that the grocery stores sell it packaged labeled from the factory as ''Grilling Bologna.''

As for the manipulative part.... Convincing you that you are being Controlling when really they were just placing blinders on you to hide their infidelity. (been victim to that)
Accusing you of cheating because they feel guilty about the fact that they are cheating on you again. (watch that one unfold in one of my coworker on a regular basis)
Portray themselves as being wounded and broken and that you alone can heal and fix them (Now there's a role best filled Jesus, the great physician)
Portray themselves as wanting to change. (Seen Guys & Gals both guilty of that one, too)
Claim to not be good enough for you, when really they want your friend.
and the list goes on...

Duct tape is a common practice for for fixing things here in Oklahoma ... Not to
Mention bailing wire ... Yes I've even seen duct tape holding together a boot...

Wich a "boot" might be wise to do if you see any of these practices
