The Cost of Being Like Jesus

According to the Bible, Jesus would not have had long hair.

1 Corinthians 11:14
”Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?”

Only the Hollywood version of Jesus or the white European Jesus depicted in paintings has long hair. Jesus is not a white European, but he is a Jew, which would mean his skin would have been more mid-tone. We do not even know what Jesus looked like, and so to create an image of Him would be an idol.

I'm not sorry for your bringing up the issue of if Jesus really had long hair. My papa made similar comments at one point, but I have since come to understand it is attributed to Jesus being called a Nazarene (like Sampson), which is the biblical basis Hollywood was itself drawing on. Whether Jesus actually had long hair or not, I don't know. If we needed to know, I'm sure God would make it clear.

Not everyone from Nazareth was a Nazarite warrior. This was never said to be true of Jesus. More than likely He was not. One of the qualifications was not to drink wine.

No, Jesus was not a Nazirite. He was a Nazarene, meaning he was from the town of Nazareth, but he did not take the Nazirite vow. The key differences are:
  • A Nazirite took a special vow of consecration to God, which included abstaining from wine, letting hair grow uncut, and avoiding contact with dead bodies (Numbers 6:1-8). Jesus did not follow these restrictions.
  • Jesus drank wine (not the version we think of), as recorded in the gospels during the Last Supper and the wedding at Cana where he turned water into wine. If he had taken the Nazirite vow, he could not consume any wine or grape products.
  • Jesus touched dead bodies, such as when he raised Jairus' daughter from the dead (Mark 5:35-43). A Nazirite was forbidden from going near the dead.
  • There is no biblical record of Jesus taking the Nazirite vow or having uncut hair, which was a requirement for Nazirites.
The confusion arises because Jesus was called a "Nazarene", referring to his hometown of Nazareth, which sounds similar to "Nazirite".

Also, Jesus was betrayed with a kiss by Judás to show to the guards which one was Jesus. This means that Jesus did not look radically different from His chosen disciples. Meaning, the disciples of Jesus did not have long hair. Yet, if Jesus had long hair, Judas was simply told the guards He is the one with long hair.

So Jesus did not have long hair.
