There is nothing we can do in and of ourselves (through self-effort) to be saved. Likewise, there is nothing we can do in and of ourselves (through self-effort) to undo what only God can do in the first place.

Exactly. As soon as you introduce works to the salvation requirement there is no way to measure whether you are saved or not. If salvation is based on the finished work of Christ, that is measurable. It's done.

That is a misuse of scripture. The context is about surviving the end times, not the salvation of your soul.
