Helen Keller has always been an inspiration to me. In spite of being deafblind, she accomplished a lot in her life.
1. She was the first deafblind person to graduate from college
2. Authored 14 books
3. Helped influence the braille writing system around the world
4. Became an eloquent public speaker
5. Worked tirelessly for the rights of the blind
6. Traveled to 39 countries
7. Helped establish schools for the blind around the world
8. Visited veterans hospitals to encourage those blinded in the war
9. Was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom (one of the highest civilian honors) by Pres Lyndon Johnson
10. She met every president from Grover Cleveland to John F. Kennedy
11. Was the 1st person with disabilities to be honored with a statue (National Statuary Hall in Congress, state of Alabama)
12. Took care of many dogs, and was the 1st person to introduce the Japanese breed of Akitas to the US.
And though I think it's totally awesome that Helen Keller was able to accomplish so many things in her life, the thing that inspired me most about her was that she overcame a silent, dark world by living a vibrant, abundant life of joy and love. She broke out of what could have been a life-long prison and lived a full, exciting life. Her story propelled me out of my own dark world and encouraged me to overcome fear from my past. And I thought it was pretty awesome (and ironic) that God would use a young blind woman (my friend Mary) to lead me to Jesus in 1978.
