Hi Sherril,

Great scriptures to meditate on and obey! :)

In Timothy, the sound mind he tells us about is that the spirit God gives us is not a cowardly spirit. Instead, God has given us a spirit of power which dispels the cowardice we lived in when we walked according to the old man and according to the pattern of this world. In the new man we are not cowards because we have the power of the Holy Spirit living within us through the new birth.

He also says God gave us a spirit of love and self control. Self-control or discipline describes better what is meant by a sound mind that some versions use. It's a fruit of the Holy Spirit and we have all of this in Christ through the new birth in Him and through the resident indwelling Holy Spirit of promise.

Amen! We walk in power and not cowardice, we walk in love and not in hate and we walk in self control instead of being unstable or confused or live with agitation.

I'm always awestruck and amazed at what extent our Heavenly Father went to, to ensure that we are victorious and overcomers in Him. He has given us everything we need for life and Godliness in Him. That's something to sing praises for all the day long!!!

"Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober (Regular, calm, serious, Christ-minded) judgement, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you." (Romans 12:3).

…when Moses was grown…he went out to his brethren and looked at their burdens. — (Exodus 2:11).

Moses saw the oppression of his people and felt certain that he was the one to deliver them, and in the righteous indignation of his own spirit he started to right their wrongs. After he launched his first strike for God and for what was right, God allowed Moses to be driven into empty discouragement, sending him into the desert to feed sheep for forty years. At the end of that time, God appeared to Moses and said to him, “ ‘…bring My people…out of Egypt.’ But Moses said to God, ‘Who am I that I should go…?’ (Exodus 3:10-11). In the beginning Moses had realized that he was the one to deliver the people, but he had to be trained and disciplined by God first. He was right in his individual perspective, but he was not the person for the work until he had learned true fellowship and oneness with God.

We may have the vision of God and a very clear understanding of what God wants, and yet when we start to do it, there comes to us something equivalent to Moses’ forty years in the wilderness. It’s as if God had ignored the entire thing, and when we are thoroughly discouraged, God comes back and revives His call to us. And then we begin to tremble and say, “Who am I that I should go…?” We must learn that God’s great stride is summed up in these words— “I AM WHO I AM…has sent me to you” (Exodus 3:14).

We must also learn that our individual effort for God shows nothing but disrespect for Him (not to be confused with effort employed by Him) — our individuality is to be rendered radiant through a personal relationship with God, so that He may be “well pleased” (Matthew 3:17). We are focused on the right individual perspective of things; we have the vision and can say, “I know this is what God wants me to do.” But we have not yet learned to get into God’s stride. If you are going through a time of discouragement, there is a time of great personal growth ahead.

Sober-minded is Christ-minded, meaning at all costs to us thru humble dependence in Him. But be sure, He will honor His promises to His Children, for and thru us. We must place our minds in Christ, and He will see us thru!

Thank you for this post. What a great post! When my first husband was murdered these were the Scriptures I held onto. When my second husband and I divorced these were the Scriptures I held on to. When I got clean off dope, these were the Scriptures I held on to. When I found out my son is autistic these are the Scriptures I held on to. When I got saved and my family rejected me, these were the Scriptures I held on to. When I go to work and must deal with stupid people these ARE the Scriptures I hold on to so I do not tell my customers off or beat people’s heads in.

In a span of almost 30years years the Scripture has never lost its power. Why? Because it is ALIVE and SHARPER THAN A TWO EDGED SWORD DIVIDING BETWEEN THE BONE AND THE MARROW!!! Around 2,000 years old and still active and ALIVE!!!!!

I love this verse.......... 2 Timothy 1:7 For God does not give us the spirit of fear, but of {Power} of {Love} and of a {Sound mind.}

So what we have here is God's recipe for dealing with fear. It is the power and the love of the indwelling Holy Spirit which can prevent us from being fearful, and enable us to maintain a sound mind (disciplined and self-controlled thoughts). The only thing over which we have complete control is our thoughts, therefore we must guard our minds against all negative and fearful thoughts.

A sound mind is founded on sound doctrine. The double minded man is resting on unsound doctrine and is tossed to and fro because of it.
