It is sad that today so many of the doctrines of the various denominations are so defeatist in nature. If you live by them you will be a failure in life. God does not call people to be failures. He calls them to be OVERCOMERS!

Revelation 21:7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.

This is a poor translation of the verb "overcome". This is a present tense verb which means you are seeing the overcoming as it is happening. The translation should be "He that is overcoming..." --- that means here and now. If you are overcoming then you will be living life as a son of God.

What is it that we overcome? Satan, sin and self. Overcomers do not succumb to the temptations of Satan. Overcomers do not sin. Overcomers do not yield to the pleasures of the flesh.

Overcoming is all about victory in life! Overcoming is all about winning! Overcoming is all about being a son of God just like Jesus.

"He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death" (Revelation 21:7-8).

Following the OP verse are 8 items of those that did not overcome . . . it would appear. I'll consider the first two because the rest are self-evident.

Fearful - That is the person that is so afraid of what others might think that he avoids controversial things at all cost . . . such as discussing religion and politics. He wouldn't be caught dead loading his family into the car on Sunday morning for fear that folks will shun him and he'll no longer be invited over the parties of his neighbors, and he so loves the poker game on Saturday night. He's afraid that if he gets religion, he wouldn't be able to keep it anyway.

Unbelieving - Kind of goes hand-in-hand with the first, but he is portrayed by Paul in Romans 1:18ff. He chose a religious ceremonial over being washed in the Blood of the Lamb of God. He is comfortable with the theory of evolution because it means that there is no God . . . and if there is no God there is no judgment - so he is safe from the convictions he might otherwise feel if perchance there really was a God, which there isn't, of course.

Well, there is the eighth that should be considered. Liars are those that joyfully handle the Word of truth deceitfully and tell people that there are other ways to get into heaven then what those churchy people claim - such as following the Law, trying as best as you can because God is love and there is a brotherhood of man and a fatherhood of God. They lie and say that God has no 'perfect' standard that we must keep or we can not approach His holiness and must spend eternity separated from Him.

So, who are the overcomers?

We are told that they overcame by the blood of the Lamb.

1 John 5:4 - For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. (y)

Those who believe they live a sinless, without fault or defect, flawless, absolute perfect life 100% of the time (exactly as Jesus lived) are suffering from a terminal case of self righteousness. (1 John 1:8-10)

Sadly so . . .

"For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth" (Romans 10:3-4).

One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, "My son, the battle is between 2 "wolves" inside us all.

One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.

The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith."

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather:
"Which wolf wins?"

The old Cherokee simply replied,
"The one you feed."

We do not overcome by becoming sinless.. We overcome by believing Jesus and trusting in the atonement He secured for us.. When we do this we are covered by His blood... All glory and honor and boasting is for our LORD and what He did to secure victory for us..

Revelation 12: KJV
10 "And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. {11} And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death."
