Hanukkah 2018: Begins Today December 2 at sunset. Ends Wednesday, December 10 at nightfall.

Hanukkah or Chanukah (means Dedication) The holiday commemorates the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem.

Jesus announced that He was the Messiah during Hanukkah.

John 10:
22 And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication (Hanukkah/Chanukah), and it was winter.

23 And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon's porch.

24 Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly.

25 Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me.
(NOTE: Matt 16:16-17 & Jn 4:25-26 Jesus again reveals he is the Christ)

Some Hanukkah History:
Leading up to 164 BC. Syria via Antiochus Epiphanes governed the territory of Israel/Judea. A group of Greco/Assyrian soldiers came to a Jewish priest. Mattathias. They demanded he sacrifice a pig to a pagan god. Mattathias fearing the LORD more then the soldiers refused. A fellow Jew that feared the soldiers volunteered to sacrifice the pig.

Mattathias drew his sword & killed the compromising Jew. Jewish men effective in warfare known as the Maccabees. Rose up & drove out the Greco/Assyrian soldiers. Recaptured & consecrated the Temple to God. They found the Torah, but the Menorah had only enough oil for 1 day burning. God caused the Menorah to miraculously burn for 8 days!

Hanukkah commemorates this miracle by lighting of candles for 8 successive nights. A Hanukkah menorah has 9 branches instead of the usual 7. During the holiday, candles are lit 1 by 1 each night.

The 9th candle on the Hanukkah Menorah. Is called the (Shamash) > SERVANT Candle & used each day to light the other of the 8 candle sticks.

Believers have been lit by "The Anointed One". And are to be lights that shine & point to the LIGHT of the WORLD, Jesus the Christ.

Matthew 5:
14 Jesus said; Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
(NOTE: The middle candle in the Temple & Hanukkah Menorah/candlesticks are a shadow of Christ. The Light & Lighter.
