Va Pensiero is an aria by Verdi from the opera Il Nabucco (Nebucachadnezzar in English).
It's the last aria in the opera and it's about the return of the Jews to their homeland after
being in exile in Babylon for some 40-50 years. It was written as sort of a fanfare as they
were getting closer to home. Va pensiero means go in thought so I it's not difficult to
imagine how many thoughts they might have after being gone for so long. So the fanfare
is for their joyful return home.
