Not only so, but wealso glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. (Romans 5:3-5 NIV)

Patience is basically another word for long-suffering.
We dont suffer in vain.

Hey! rong... PTL!

Jesus learned obedience by the things which he suffered. Heb 5:8 I've often thought, based upon this verse, that by having our memories removed to wipe away our tears and free us from all our sorrows; which allows me to walk in obedience to the Spirit now and keeps me from ever blaspheming the Holy Spirit when we're in the world to come.

Also, the Lord grievously chastens his children that we might be partakers of his holiness. Heb 12:10, 11 When calamity strikes others, I think that the Lord makes the rain to fall on the just and the unjust; but when it happens to me, I consider it to be the Lord's chastening and looking to what needs correction, I trust that the Lord will produce in me the peaceable fruit of righteousness.

As a minister of the gospel, Paul speaks of our rejoicing as he filled up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in his flesh for his body's sake, which is the church. Col 1:24 Sobering thought since we too are able ministers of the gospel.

Adversity begets patience.

That is what I told a person claiming Christ that was not acting Christlike as I was beating him with a baseball bat.

1Co 4:21 What will ye? shall I come unto you with a rod (a baseball bat will do fine), or in love, and in the spirit of meekness?

Paul endorsed this kind of activity, so who am I to go against Paul, for he gave them a choice whether they want Paul to come unto them with a rod beating the rebellious saints, or in love so they better abide by the truth.

Only kidding.

I'll add as well...

Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. (Jas 1:3-4)

Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. (2Pe 1:4-7)
