I have a question are there two different marys aside from Mary, mother of Jesus in the Bible?

I'm wondering if Mary sister of Martha and Mary Magdalene the one who had seven demons cast out are the same person or two different people.

Which one anointed Jesus with perfume, it seems to me they are the same. But then you read christian literature that says they are two different marys, but are they really? They call mary sister of martha mary of bethany. But she could have moved from magdala.

Can anyone shed light on this.

There where definitly 3 seperate Marys at the crucifiction of Jesus::

John 19: KJV
25 "¶ Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene."

Agreed, I just read Mark again and wondered the same thing.

I believe it has something to do with showing the continuation of the Trinity on Earth.

God, Jesus and Holy Spirit for the trinity in heaven but on Earth, all men come from women.

As men on earth, a woman can hold 3 levels of importance.....A mother, a sister (which includes all women that come from our Father above) and a man's wife.

Just my view currently......In time, a deeper understanding could be shown.

Am I the only one that find it odd that Mary, mother of Jesus, has a sister also called Mary?
Unless she is sister-in-law. I mean I dont know anyone who gives their daughters the same name. That would have been so confusing growing up.

Mary, Mary and Mary.

And who is Cleophas?

To me Mary of Bethany and Mary Magdalene are one and the same. Just like the lazarus mentioned twice is the same person. It is fitting that Mary who sat at his feet and anointed Jesus before his burial also went to his grave with oils and spices and saw him resurrected afterward.

It is only confusing when commentaries and other christian literature make out like they are two different people.

There are others like john the baptist and John the apostle. But its pretty clear those two Johns are two different people.

Not martha martha martha. Must be a popular name, Mary.

I once had a boss named Mary and her husband was John.

Read the verse again it is talking of 4 woman

1) Mary the mother of Jesus
2) Her sister.. Name not given
3) Mary the wife of Cleophas
4) Mary Magdaline

Aha I get it now, must not have seen that all important comma. Why wasnt she named though.

Now who was Mary wife of Cleophas. This isnt the 'Mary of bethany' we read about is it? If recall the Mary who encountered Jesus in his ministry wasnt married.

Ok looking at the other gospels at the cross were:

Mary magdalene
Mary the mother of James the less and of Jose (jesus mother? )
Salome
JOanna

Salome or Joanna could have been mother Mary's sister, or the mother of zebedees children

Matthew calls mother Mary 'the other Mary'

Seems like there were quite a few women who followed Jesus to the cross

I am not sure who the Mary was because her husband Cleophas is only mentioned once in scripture..

The woman where probably safe from being arrested and executed.. The disciples where in greater fear because it seems they could face execution if they where caught and charged as co-conspirators with Jesus.. So yeah Mary seemed to be a very popular name for woman in those times.. That or it was a co-incidence that many of the woman connected with Jesus and his disciples where named Mary.. Sometimes it is hard to get ones head around what Mary is what Mary when they are discussed.. So i can see why you have asked this question and started this topic..

Seem to be lots of Mary's in the Bible, it's still a very popular name all over the middle east in one form or another. Does the name Mary have a particular meaning? How would it have been pronounced in Jesus' time/place?

Apparently Mary means 'bitterness' and the hebrew equivalent is Miriam. Miriam was Moses sister in the OT.

Well the Hebrew is Miryam, Now how that is pronounced i do not know..

I found this Utube video of it.. But i am not sure if the Hebrews today say it the same way they said it 2000 years ago.. But it is interesting to listen to..
