From the Bible

9. knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death no more hath dominion over him.

10. For the death that he died, he died unto sin once: but the life that he liveth, he liveth unto God.

11. Even so reckon ye also yourselves to be dead unto sin, but alive unto God in Christ Jesus.

12. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey the lusts thereof:

13. neither present your members unto sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves unto God, as alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

14. For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under law, but under grace. (Romans 6)

So if we still live our lives by doing sin, aren't we still alive for sin, and dead for righteousness, blind who don't see?

We are called to refuse the dark path of sins, and step in to the true life in our Lord Jesus Christ

Teach us. How do we do the what to do so we will not live our life by doing sin?

You do what you need to do, to stop making sin. For me the biggest turn point was when I really start to do good, and really wanted to stop sinning.

After that you flesh may still be prone to sin, but you mind should be able to overcome of that carnal state of flesh, so you are not anymore obedient for sin.

We were changed,GODs workmanship created In CHRIST unto good works.A person might say one thing but be thinking opposite from what they are saying,the pharisees did this all the time but GODs standard of righteousness Is perfection,HE looks at the heart and man was not able to keep HIS perfect standard of righteousness (the law) perfectly.
Paul wrote,I delight In the law of GOD after the Inward man but I see another law In my flesh warring against the law of my mind and bringing me Into captivity to the law of sin which is In my flesh.

JESUS died once to sin for us but HE Is ALIVE unto GOD.

We were changed,GODs workmanship created In CHRIST unto good works.

So then although we still sin In the flesh,JESUS fulfilled GODs standard of righteousness as fully man perfectly and righteously and Introduced a NEW covenant that whosoever BELIEVES In HIM should have Eternal Life.
JESUS Is the WORD of GOD.

Reckon yourself dead to sin but alive unto GOD In JESUS.

If I used my will power instead of the Holy Spirit to mortify the deeds of my flesh, and did what I wanted to do, would I become self-righteous?

It is up to you if you become self righteous. If you give up your power over you to the guidance of the word, as Christ is in the word, then the idea of being self righteous or not is not part of how you think and be.

It is like someone starting to walk a certain path on a journey. Lots of time our attention is on side issues and trails but we pull ourselves back, put Christ in sight ahead again, and start walking.

People seem to think that their thoughts simply come from outer space, they have no part in what their mind does. God tells Christians to obey and work for the Lord, but the church tells them that because they cannot make themselves into god like creatures, just give up any idea of working. That is not what God tells us. Actually, you are in control of your thoughts and what you put into your mind.

At the same time, simultaneously, the mind does as Paul tells us his mind does, it does what you have not willed it to do. We are then to do like what Paul did, simply shove that to one side, repent, ask Christ to forgive for Christ has paid for this thought we had. then go on following Christ again.

You must remember that our mind cannot use something it doesn't have, it uses what has been put into it. So don't put what is in lots of our TV shows, in movies, in dirty books into the mind to use but fill it with what is good, fill with God's word.

There is a simple answer to this question.
1. Knowing Jesus and the cost
2. Believing He has the power to change us
3. Obeying by following the path, and questioning every obstacle before the cross
4. Opening ones heart, whether to pain or freedom but being brutally honest
5. Sowing to the Spirit and refusing to let the evil desires of the flesh dominate.
6. Living in a state of repentance and praise
7. Letting Jesus's words dwell in us all the time
8. Turning from evil and doing good
9. Letting ones will for oneself become ones will for Christ.

The scripture says, "For if you live after the flesh, you shall die: but if you through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, you shall live" (Romans 8:13). The scripture also says, "For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor" (Galatians 2:18).

So if I use my willpower and strength (the flesh) to try and accomplish only what the Holy Spirit can do...what has been forbidden to do under grace, I die spiritually and become a transgressor under the law.

For the Law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the Law of Sin and Death (Romans 8:2).

Do Christians change themselves to be more like Jesus?

Paul also makes it very clear in Romans 8:10 that the physical body, mind / intellect, and the heart (which is evil - Jeremiah 17:9) has been rendered helpless because of the original sin; consequently, the Believer trying to overcome by willpower presents a fruitless task. Only the Holy Spirit can mortify the deeds of the flesh and make us what we ought to be (Romans 8:13). This means we cannot do it ourselves. Once again, He performs all that He does within the confines of the Finished Work of Christ (Romans 8:2).

If a Christian will and their efforts to live for God is in anything except Christ and the Cross, i.e., Finished Work, The Blood of Jesus (Romans 8:2), Satan can override your will and force you to do things you don't want to do and trying not to do (Ephesians 6:12). Jesus said deny yourself and pick up your cross and follow me (Luke 9:23).

Remember our bodies are dead and useless to God. The heart is prone to wander away from God's love and eat from "The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil." The reason why the body is dead is because of the effects of the fall has made us totally incapable of yielding spiritual obedience on a regular basis (Jeremiah 13:23). So there must be a source outside of myself that helps me to enter into sanctification which is the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:13).

So just let your mind allow all the sin it wants for all of your mind is flesh, there is nothing left in you to follow the Holy Spirit you speak of. It is impossible to follow anything without using this mind you are denying the use of.

When God created this mind you say you won't use, God said it was good. You are denying something and throwing something away without using it for good over this false "flesh" idea that got in the mind you are tossing out.

No that won't make you self-righteous. If you use your will to serve God.

29. Jesus answered, The first is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God, the Lord is one: 30. and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. (Mark 12)
