Rather Be Humble And Help Others,

It is not that we should never think about ourselves but
rather it is that we should never think of only ourselves.
Of course Jesus gave Himself completely and without
grumbling did things for others first. Of course that is
the ideal way but we have families to look after and we
can't leave them especially when they are young and
need nurturing. For us the ideal would be to include
and involve the family in all things. In that way there is
a unity of one just as Jesus was one. Many say that we
can't be saved by works and that is true. But once we
have been saved, we should be willing to help others to
bring hope and encouragement. Jesus at the washing of
the feet in John's Gospel said: I have given you example
and so you should also do. We should not be afraid to
serve and help others.

I agree we need to have self control, if it is your ambition to have more self control I think that is a good thing. So selfish ambition can be viewed differently than self ambition if aiming for more self control in my opinion.

On the other hand... Anything that we do, if we are successful at it, and especially as Christians, will be criticised and ridiculed. Don't forget that we Christians are held to a higher standard of scrutiny. The world wants to bring God down to its level... The things we truly do in the service of God's will are not of this world, and we all serve according to our God given gifts. If you're not seeking God's will then you must only be serving your own.
