They dont carry weapons do they? The thing thats 'army' about them is they wear a uniform and call each other by army names like sergeant and lietenant etc. Maybe the cult like thing about them is they have a ranking like that. Their magazine is called 'war cry' which, I think means when theres war, people cry. But it might just mean the trumpet blast or referr to their brass bands.
Theres also the peace corp, run by americans, which is kind of on similar lines but is entriely secular and meant to promote american goodwill.
in nz we have something called VSA which is Volunteer Service Abroad.
People can come to gether and do good things, not just come together and do evil things. Dont join a gang, join Jesus church.
I also found people can get confused and join wordly false churches which go on 'crusades' and spread intolerance, fighting anyone who doesnt believe in the exact doctrine they do, which turns out to be man made. Some churches are very militant in their expression, as if to suggest that the enemy is someone to be hated, instesd of what Jesus said, to love your enemies. Even when they persecute you.
This is how Paul got to be put in prison, beaten , shipwrecked, stoned, yet he just kept boasting about his infirmities and how God delivered him and Jesus saved him. After that day on the road to Damascus Paul eschewed violence. He said he would treat others just as a nurse treats a child, with gentleness.

Yes they do have the rankings, but they are conferred by the years of service not by merit.
You have to understand the history at the turn of the century England (18th to 19th) in London England, much poverty and all that comes with that.... William Booth was a circuit preacher created a following.
"War Cry" means war against pestilence, poverty, sin, their slogan is Heart of God, Hand to Man ... so it is all about good works, I will say they work tirelessly.

Wasnt it william Booth and his wife Catherine. Catherine apparently was the brains behind it all. But it started way back in the 19th century when there was a very rigid heirarchy in british society almost like a caste system. The rich aristocrats would have nothing to do with the poor even though, in Gods eyes, everyone is human and precious to Him. Apparently the rich just treated the poor as less than human, and they had slaves too. Still do to a certain extent today.
But back then it was alarming and the established church at the time just turned a blind eye.
I dont know if there is a masonic connection. The freemasons arent really into helping the poor thse days. They sponsor writer festivals though, that I know. I dont think they allow christian writers to these though. When they had one here, half the writers were gay or lesbians or feminists and freethinkers. I guess to disemminate their political views.

It was the industrial revolution that caused large numbers to flock to the cities etc.,
I agree though that Booth saw a need and worked to help the people and it was a terrible time for sure.
Catherine was indeed very intelligent
The freemasons back then and to some extent today maintain a thin veneer of good works as a cover....his whole movement fits right in with mason doctrine of good works to for greater illumination.

Well they must be classified as a church because of the IRS. Any religious non-profit organization is called a church by them. Even the mission where I worked in California had to incorporate as a church even though we had no congregation. I guess that is just for tax exempt purposes. I believe they may have a congregation. I am not sure.

Salvation army operate as a church here in NZ cos they do worship services..I have visited and it seems just like any other church service really.
Only thing they dont do is communion and baptism I heard.
I didnt notice anyone wearing uniforms, maybe they only wear them when they on the job or ministering. Mostly they are known for their op shops. Which seem to be everywhere. My town is full of them.
I kinda doubt they would be connected with freemasonry. Maybe its just the regalia thats similar. Arent the scouts and girl guides part of them though?
