I could be wrong or I misheard...but I thought I heard he did not purchase the gun legally to begin with

you know, I would not blame politicians. most people can listen to whatever...and even get angry, but they don't go full blown assault and kill for the glory of it all. however I would not call everyone who does mentally ill either.
everybody (well many to be sure) want answers quickly because the mess just needs to somehow make sense when in fact, it never will unless you take into account many factors and do not expect simplistic offerings to do the job. I can't help but see the condition of the world in general. it's on fire

Let me clue you in a bit....LAW breakers will BREAK LAWS.......and for the record......I have spent almost 3.5 years of the last 5 in Australia which disarmed it's people in 1992 and has some of the strictest gun laws in the world and every time I am there SOMEONE gets SHOT by a criminal with an ILLEGAL GUN and if not a GUN they use KNIVES like in ENGLAND or MACHETES......there are plenty of LAWS on the books NOW, but they are NOT enforced and CRIMINALS have MORE rights than CITIZENS...start enforcing the laws NOW on the books and EXECUTING people like this in a VERY PUBLIC WAY and see what a difference it makes....
And for the record....a DISARMED people are sitting ducks for evil men with weapons that will break the laws anyway and or for tyrannical governments that enslave the people and become nanny states that write tickets for eating an apple while driving or writing you a ticket if you are on a cell phone while I AM DRIVING or fining you if you walk away more than 10 feet from a car with the keys in it...........
For the record....I am an 80's Marine....I am a law abiding citizen and there is no way in hell that I or any of my friends or family will give up our weapons to a left wing government that legitimizes killing babies, pushes euthanasia, has no problem allowing criminals, drug dealers, Islamic terrorists, or ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS IN and or supports American terrorists like ANTIFA and others to run rough shod over our streets...

well you have to be not thinking clearly yourself, I would think, if you think it's ok for people with the mental capacity of a 10 year old or bi-polar or whatever, should carry. as you said
there are already background checks in place and not everyone who shoots up the public is incapacitated mentality
as long as people can steal guns, lie to get them, or 'borrow' them or whatever illegal practice they can dream of, they will do so
so called law abiding citizens most likely will not go on a rampage, but if they do, does that mean everyone has to turn in their firearms?
my husband says forks should all be turned in because they make people fat.

Parents have failed to nurture their children in the Lord. Parents have failed to teach the bible to their children. The void has been filled by violent video games and we now see the fruit of the failure.
Guns are not the problem. Guns are a convenient point that politicians can use to subject the nation to their will. These shootings are the fruit of a nation turning it's back on the Lord. We have only seen what is a preview of what is coming from God.

I don’t know where you are from, but the background check system doesn’t really work well in Texas.
The consequence is that mentally unstable people are purchasing firearms easily.
As a former US Marine I’m sure you’re quite used to situations where guns in the hands of the wrong people are involved. Maybe you have even been staring down the barrel of a gun once in a while? Maybe you haven’t.
Anyway, it’s not much fun being in a situation like that. You’re not left with a lot of options but your training eventually puts you in charge of the situation.
Despite background checks, the mentally sick people always seem to have firearms at the ready which they have legally purchased. Why? Records are well known, still they got legal guns. Why?
Because the background check system isn’t working.
This also is a result of polarization. "The if you don't join my side you're my enemy mentality that is creeping in around the world. Neo Nazis, Neo Marxists, Maoists, Al Qaida, The Clan, Nation of Islam and Antifa (within the USA) All have very similar violent paranoid ideations. The tactics change and god of choice change with locations and type of propaganda they are exposed to. And lonely, disenfranchised, angry, young single men are the most easy to fall prey to this demonic madness but it's quite real and spreading like cancer.
Young men without a loving, nurturing male role model gravitate to strong authoritative alpha male speech ever if the speakers are mainly full of them selves and hot air. Saddam Hussein was found hiding in a hole in the ground and Bin Laudon tried using a wife as a shield but foolish young people idolize them and go on murderous suicide missions for them. It's neither brave nor logical.

Society has a huge problem. Children need love and discipline. Both in healthy amounts.
