Jesus is the propitiation for our sins, right? If so, did it need to be Jesus, if so, why?

Yes, yes, to fulfill what was written concerning Him.

Luke 24:25-27
Then He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! 26Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?” 27And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

Luke 24:44
Then He said to them, “These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.”

In order for the divine exchange to work, the sacrifice must be without Adam's sin, and fulfill the entire law on our behalf.

Well the answer is rather simple. Jesus is God who became Man to die for the sins of the whole world (John 1:29).

Only God as sinless Man (through the supernatural virgin birth) could accomplish the work of propitiation. The sin debt needed to be paid in full, and the blood of Christ needed to be shed for our redemption. The Bible calls it the blood of God.

Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which He hath purchased with His own blood. (Acts 20:28)

Therefore God the Father saw His only begotten Son -- Jesus -- as the Lamb of God from before the foundation of the world (1 Peter 1:18-21).

And therefore the name Jesus (which is the equivalent of the Hebrew Yeshua or Yahshua) means GOD IS OUR SALVATION.

He is the only one that is righteous, we have none of our own.
