I have been watching a few documentaries on the Jewish survivors of Nazi atrocities!
I have noticed when they pay their respects at the graves of those who have passed, they place a stone on the grave or headmarker!

Upon researching .......why.

This is what I found!

Is.40:6/7 All flesh is grass,and all its beauty like a flower of the field;
grass withers and flowers fade.......flowers an apt symbol of .....passing!

But the memory is supposed to be lasting....stones represent the permanence of memory
Stones do not die !

An altar is no more ....than a pile of stones!
Noah built the first altar to God! ( Gen.8:20)

In moments when we are faced with the fragility of life,a stone reminds us that there is permanence amidst the pain!

Jesus is my ROCK AND MY FORTRESS!

Have you watched the movie, Schindler's List?
I won't give it away but what you refer to in the OP, putting stones on the grave, is a part of that movie.
In Jewish tradition it is said that the soul remains for awhile after death. The grave is thought to be the souls permanent home, retaining something of that loved one now departed. Placing stones on the grave is thought to anchor the soul, to keep it in the grave. It is actually a sign of respect.

Orthodox Jews bury their dead in a plain pine casket that has holes drilled in the bottom. No embalming.(in many states in the U.S. embalming is elective not compulsory) This allows the body to decay as is said in scripture.
The body returns to the dust from which it sprang, the soul to the God who gave it.

Yes,many times I have watched this movie!
I have a passion to study the " Holocaust!
There are so few left who even acknowledge what horrors humans can do to humans in masses!
This time period shows so much courage ,faith, and the ability to survive!

I too found that it is believed they put rocks on to weigh the soul down and keep it in the grave.

I chose to look more at the representation of the " stone as opposed to the act itself.

Thank you for your input!

Good philosophy, look to the representation of the stone.
Off the top of my pointy head I'd say the stones placed on Schindler's grave, as you've seen the movie so you know the context of my observation, could have been to impart the message that Schindler was a rock when having to play the politics of the Reich in order to save the lives that it thought to exterminate.

I can't watch the Schindler's List movie without having plenty of tissues on hand.

I loved this scene where the Nazi's were trying to execute a prisoner they didn't know was also Rabbi. What a beautiful singing voice he had.
"Strange". No, God. :D
