Hebrews 10:32-39 32 But recall the former days when, after you were enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings, 33 sometimes being publicly exposed to reproach and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those so treated. 34 For you had compassion on those in prison, and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one. 35 Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. 36 For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised. 37 For,
“Yet a little while,
and the coming one will come and will not delay;
38 but my righteous one shall live by faith,
and if he shrinks back,
my soul has no pleasure in him.”
39 But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.
I was listening to a sermon on Hebrews 10 recently, and the author referred to an incident involving Dan Savage, a gay activist, and his abusive, perverted persecution toward young people at a journalism seminar.
Most young people listened passively, or approvingly, to Dan's immoral hate speech toward Christians. However, a fair number of students got up and walked out.
He made the comment that society has learned to "ignore" the language of Scripture concerning slavery, and we need to do the same thing in regards to homosexuality.
I realize this event happened about 7 years ago, but I didn't pay much attention to it until listening to this sermon.
I was encouraged to see that some younger people took a stand against society's support of sinful behavior, despite being ridiculed and called a vile name by Savage.
Now, I realize some Christians are genuinely hateful, like Steven Anderson and the Westboro Baptist types, and that other lesser-sanctified and ill-discipled Christians wish harm to come upon the sexually perverse rather than repentance and salvation, but my personal conviction and hope is that attitude is relatively rare, and pretty much non-existent amongst grace-filled Christians who have been well-discipled.
