3. Sandals of the Gospel of Peace

(15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.)

A Roman Legionnaire was fitted with sandals that was very durable, built for mobility, and
often had tiny nails in the bottom for better traction.

Colossians 3:15 New International Version (NIV)
15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called
to peace. And be thankful.

The peace of Christ can be the difference between moaning and groaning or thanking and praising.

In readiness we must be ready to respond. The culture is engulfed in greed, sexual immorality, and pride. The peace of Christ gives the believer a new perspective and a new outlook on life’s circumstances. We know that the resurrection of Christ sealed the fate of Satan and his evil domain. We already know who wins the war, all we are called to be is faithful and to respond in obedience.

So, no matter how scary, dangerous, or dark the culture may become we have this peace or
serenity that can keep the Christian soldier levelheaded, calm, and disciplined in the face of battle. This kind of peace was the peace shown through Moses who had faith in God as he
spoke to Pharaoh, or David and Goliath, or Elijah and the 450 prophets of Baal, or the apostles
who were brought in and made to appear before the Sanhedrin to be questioned and that led
to them being flogged but resulted in them praising Jesus.

This kind of peace only comes from our submission to God and the adherence to the Spirit. This adherence is exactly what being grounded in God means. This is the clear example of a Romans soldier’s sandals as the studded nails in the bottom would grip the terrain and would help the soldier stand against all opposition. We put on our footwear with the mindset of the type of terrain we will experience and in this we are preparing for what is to come.

Discussion Questions:
1. Have you ever experienced the peace that the Gospel gives the believer?
2. In what ways are God inwardly or outwardly persuading and guiding you to
move down a certain path?
3. If you often do not experience this peace, then what in your life may be
preventing you?

Gospel of peace sandals are worn and torn from endurance. Gospel of war sandals will have three inch titanium spikes that dig into the ground.
