Not everyone is aware of this but there is in fact a difference in the role of the prophet and the gift of prophecy itself.
The gift of prophecy itself is described as to speak to God's people to encourage edify uplift to strenghten and build up. In this way we all are able to do this however there are those who specialize in this area. The holy spirit flows through their words intensifying the effect and deepining the impact upon the hearts of others. The gift can also come with dreams and visions and even to actually prophesy and this is what most think of when they think of the gift of prophecy and the prophet however this is not always the case.
There is a division of sorts in the gift itself, some can walk in this gift being gifted in being able to speak and impact hearts greater than others yet not recieve dreams or visions while often times you hear of people having dreams and visions yet you don't see them walk in the other area as one who specializes in impacting hearts. This is because they serve different purposes, dreams and visions are God speaking to us while the other side of walking in the gift of encouraging uplifting edifying and strenghtening his church is God speaking through us to his church. It is not always clear why some walk in one way and others another except that we all have certaon roles in his kingdom that he built us specifically for.
The prophet is a highly debated role and person anyone claiming to be one is almost always met instantly with adversity from others because claiming to be one is like claiming to be the mouth of God himself and people instantly jump at such a claim because the arrogance of such a claim is the thought process. The scriptures even say that there will be many false prophets in these days and the scriptures are 100% accurate in this. I myself was severely damaged by so called prophets on youtube in my first few years of salvation and the severe damage they did to me has still not healed.
This is not a role that is to be taken lightly, the damage you can do to others is dangerously easy and many only do so for following views and popularity unaware the damage they do and the people they mislead under false words. While it is not common thus saith the lord is not something just people on youtube say he does still do this just not near as often as hye speaks to us in many other ways. The prophet is actually another topic in of itself it is a widely diversed debate but the gist of it is that the prophet speaks what God places on their hearts rarely ever is it a thus saith the lord.
There are times of course when they will walk in the prophetic they can prophesy which is to declare what is to come however it never goes against God's word it only confirms it and edifies.
Sadly however since so many false prophets rampage many close their ears to anyone claiming to be one and it is understandable, but even more than that many try to disprove anyone speaking in prophecy the idea of the prophet is greatly tainted as the gift of prophecy as well. However you will find that the true prophets are not the ones claiming a thus saith the lord or simply only speaking of what is to come or only having dreams and visions but the ones who are seen as such by their fruits they rarely ever claim to be one themselves unless asked and most of their walk in the gift is specifically in what I said before the gift of words.
Their words give life, the edify inspire and strengthen his church they speak what he places on their hearts almost as if by instinct they know his voice and the listen and speak. They don't do this for themselves and that is exactly why they are called for such a role because anyone who desires to be a prophet knows it isn't for our own benefit. And anyone who desires to be a prophet needs to have a understanding of the role and the gift and anyone claiming to be one but only misleads and deludes his sheep claiming to be speaking for God should be very wary of themselves because it is not a simple sin to claim to be speaking for him it is a great offense and especially so when you lead his church astray in doing so.
