Ok so the first part of 1 Peter 3 is speaking about marriage and how to do it Gods way.

But the latter part is all about choosing to suffer.
Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing

Then I realized he is still talking about marriage
The whole reality of marriage just landed its reality right on the page.

For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous
and his ears are attentive to their prayer,
but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil - points back to the hindering of prayers in verse 7

seriously God face is against you because you are doing evil in your marriage by not obey god?

He is basically saying you need to choose how you want to suffer in your marriage?
Oh and if your now serious about doing it in obedience to him he will not listen so much to your prayers and even set himself against you...

Who's ready to get married? Anybody you know that you want to risk committing to doing this with?

Yes, Yes... it may apply to life in general but in a marriage the rubber hits the road and the realities of what none of us like to admit to come out on display.

It is not without reason this is here in the context of instruction about marriage without a heartbeat in-between.
If fact Peter connects it directly with the dreaded Finally, as if it you thought the first part was enough.

So, you can suffer doing it your way or you can suffer doing it Gods way?
But your gonna suffer either way...

-- Welcome to the reality of Sin in the world, and its going to right ahead and using your toothbrush. --
We are told we will either will give into fear or submit ourselves to God in obedience.
Everyone is looking to defend themselves from suffering wrongly but we end up suffering in doing the wrong things because they choose to defend themselves, rather then obey God and suffer his way.

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.

Man oh Man if people see that in you in your marriage they are gonna want answer! They are going to judge you big time as a fool for doing it Gods way.

Still my favorite part here was you get to choose how you are going to suffer in your marriage.

Crazy right?

Leave it to God to turn they worlds ways upside-down.
THE world says you need more and better communication. God says be silent.
The world says you need to spice things up, put on something sexy. God says put on a quiet and gentle spirit and do it like the holy women of old they everyone admires and looks up to.

Seriously who does that?
Who wants that?
and who wants to die to your self so you woman can have what she needs from God?
Seriously die to what you want so you can be an expression of Christ for her when she is totally ungrateful and does not even see you doing it or value it at all?

But we may think we know how to do relationship better, but better then God?

But I suspect Im out of the game.
It would take a kingdom focused, spirit walking lady wearing that quiet spirit of peace all about her to even turn my head these days.

Seriously who wants that?
We all want the fairy tail.
But the fairy tail is a lie.

Who wants to be Christ and the Church so the world can see how it really is with God and us?
What man wants that responsibility, taking on the job of dealing with sin, presenting your woman holy and perfect spotless and blameless before Christ at his coming? Most of us can barely stand against our own sin.
What woman these days would ever trust a man with the job / trust God with the man?

"8 Finally, all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters."

Doesn't sound like marriage to me.

Marriage is from God, created by God. Misusing scripture to demonize it is rather a slap in the face of God. This sounds more like the ramblings of someone with a bad experience than a scriptural basis.

Yea its a tough one alright.
speaking as woman...why do we even get into relationships and marriages? cos every wife I know is long -suffering, I mean the first few years seems great until reality sets in and when you talk to them its like no holds barred on the foibles and deficiencies of their husbands....they soon find out hes not even close to perfect and Mr Right has all this stuff wrong with him.
some find out that their hubby snores so loud they cant even get a good nights sleep.

Personally I believe that women who marry are great optimists, or they are wearing rose coloured glasses or possibly were drunk or drugged at the time.
I never really got why Leah agreed to marry Jacob when she knew he didnt love her...but if she hadnt married him maybe we wouldnt have Jesus.

but back then, women would have been honoured to have given birth to the messiah I suppose. Its like yea MY baby is gonna be the messiah and save the world.

God is saying don't continue arguing with your spouse, instead replace your anger with kindness.

That's actually with any decent relationship. Some people are just naturally good at it and some just have to be right.

There is suffering with any relationship as well. There is always a give/take part of a relationship. There might be a few "fairy tales" in your relationship, but that's not how life works in general.

Like anything the more work you have to put into something, the more it's worth it. Blessings in general mean more work. When a man gets a promotion he receives more money, but he has more responsibility and time to work. When you go into a relationship you have love, but you have to nurture that relationship as well.

It's similar to a relationship with God in that people will probably be against you for being a Christan. However the love of God is worth it. Marriage is probably the closest symbolism to our relationship with God in that you feel together like 1.

Finally, all of you married people who i just gave all that advice to.
Sympathy, love and being of one mind in doing marriage Gods way.
Seriously it is very good advice to anyone in a marriage

Marriage is not the problem, its your heart of sin and disobedience to God and your unwillingness to suffer in doing it Gods way.

That's adding words that aren't there to make it fit your interpretation. Not helping your case by doing so.

just one view on how the words that already exist can be easily understood.
Otherwise every comment is adding what is not there.

This can be hard to follow, to love people that don't love back. Its a hard saying. Look at all Gods people who have suffered taking on this verse. I suppose its Gods will and should always be followed.

In this wold you will have trouble, suffering.
This is God saying how do yo want to suffer?
With Him or against Him.
In obedience to Gods will or in disobedience.
Sooner or later you are going to suffer anyway, because there is sin in this world.
In Jesus we have the freedom to choose what for.
